Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Phonology of the Spanish of El Prado, New Mexico is a descriptive study of the phonetics and phonemics of the Spanish spoken in the area known as El Prado, just north of Taos, New Mexico. Although the Spanish of the entire area surrounding Taos is essentially the same, for the sake of simplicity and convenience the thesis has been limited to El Prado. The purpose of this study is to provide and objective description of a spoken Spanish dialect applying the methodology of linguistics to a …

The Administration Of Representative Confederate Prisons, George Form Aug 1956

The Administration Of Representative Confederate Prisons, George Form

History ETDs

Since neither the North nor the South had faced squarely the likelihood of war until the action at Fort Sumter, it is not surprising that both governments were unprepared for the handling of prisoners until they were actually confronted with the capture of troops. Of necessity, an impromptu and makeshift prison administration had to be devised, and, indeed, the retention of prisoners was not universally accepted as essential so long as it could be avoided. No suitable provisions or advance preparations for the care of war prisoners were undertaken by governments more vitally concerned with the deployment and supply of …

Aspects Of The Epic In Eskimo Folklore, Walter Jack Arron Aug 1956

Aspects Of The Epic In Eskimo Folklore, Walter Jack Arron

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to examine the epic as it appears in Eskimo folklore and to delineate its most prominent characteristics. ... So far as I know, my study is the only one of its kind concerning the Eskimo epic. The evidence I have collected does not support a hypothesis that there is an Eskimo epic in the generic sense of the term ... However, in the body of Eskimo folklore there are tales which some collectors have labeled epic and there are others in unclassified collections which have epic characteristics. These tales are the Eskimo epic as …

Christian Worship: A Psychological Study, Jonas M. Berkey Aug 1956

Christian Worship: A Psychological Study, Jonas M. Berkey

Graduate Thesis Collection

Both Psychology and Christianity are concerned with the well-being or wholeness of the human person. Since God is no respecter of persons, then all men are alike in their basic nature. Psychology bears out this conclusion. Therefore, upon the foundation of this basic agreement psychology may be used effectively in helping to establish a fundamental agreement for the effective worship of Christian men. The scope of this treatment will consider only three of the basic acts of Christian worship - prayer, baptism and the Lord's Supper.

The History Of Interposition, John Harrison Geiser Jul 1956

The History Of Interposition, John Harrison Geiser

Master's Theses

As long as governments, laws and regulations have existed, men have sought means to challenge, circumvent and annul them. Whether honorably or selfishly motivated, only time, the great revelator can prove; and few lessons learned serve to prevent mens thoughts from again straying to these channels or desire.

To thoroughly exhaust the subject or desire in man to resist authority in government would be to re-write mythology and add still another labor to the burdens or Hercules. To do it completely would involve a lifetime of study, another of writing, and would necessitate encompassing all knowledge of men, religion, government …

Some Views Of Slavery From The Writings Of Virginia Authors, 1824-1865, Josephine Mary Logan Jul 1956

Some Views Of Slavery From The Writings Of Virginia Authors, 1824-1865, Josephine Mary Logan

Master's Theses

The period from 1824 to 1865 was a most critical one in the history of the United States. It was during those years that issues of great magnitude arose. After a period of discussion, views crystallized and finally became fundamental beliefs in the minds of the people of both the North and tho South. The result of those beliefs culminated in the Civil war. Tho issues were concerned chiefly with the question or states' rights, tho protective tariff, and, last but not least, with that of African slavery.

In Virginia, which had been the first of tho English colonies in …

Philosophy ETDs

It is the purpose of this study to describe Aristotle's "set of presuppositions" as they relate to one science--biology--to lay bare, as it were, the framework within which biological knowledge for Aristotle is to be understood. It shall assume that Aristotle, like any philosopher, has two kinds presuppositions, each of which properly understood may serve to elucidate the other.

Joachim Of Flora And The Eternal Gospel, Theodore Moeller Jun 1956

Joachim Of Flora And The Eternal Gospel, Theodore Moeller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Joachim of Flora is one of the most facinating characters to arise out of the Middle Ages. In the centuries following his death he has become almost legendary, for as one author puts it, "The story of Joachim takes us into the atmosphere of charming legend." His own contacts with our present age are numerous, and yet he has remained relatively unknown. Dante admired him, honoring him with lines in the Divine Comedy, George Sand based one of her romances, Spiridon his life, and the philosophers such as Schelling and Hegel pay tribute to his work. Certainly such a figure …

Paul's Baptismal Theology With Special Reference To Rom. 6, Walter Keller Jun 1956

Paul's Baptismal Theology With Special Reference To Rom. 6, Walter Keller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The original intention was to undertake an exegetical investigation of this passage. However, it soon became obvious that, to understand the thought of the Apostle, it is impossible to confine one’s study to a simple passage. And so, though the original intention continued to remain the foremost concern, the problem assumed a broader scope, as the title of thesis indicates. Very naturally therefore, references to baptismal sayings outside the Pauline corpus lie outside the scope of this thesis, inasmuch as the purpose of the investigation is to ascertain the mind of Paul with regard to this sacrament.

The Theology Of The Wisdom Of Solomon, Walter Rast Jun 1956

The Theology Of The Wisdom Of Solomon, Walter Rast

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We are justified in supposing that for a Jew, living in Egypt and yet preserving the foundation of his religious heritage, this problem was poignant indeed. And, at the risk of oversimplification, our writer's personal confrontation with Hellenism would seem to be his chief problem, and the problem at the bottom of our own quest into The Wisdom of Solomon. As an outgrowth of this problem, it would seem that the question underlying our concern with The·Book of Wisdom would be: How does this writing compare theologically with those which hold a safe place in the canon?

The Shepherd-Flock Image In The Old Testament, Carl Graesser Jun 1956

The Shepherd-Flock Image In The Old Testament, Carl Graesser

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study therefore follows a more systematic method. We shall look at each side of the image, utilizing the pertinent material in the entire Old Testament before moving on to another side of the image. After a brief survey of the extra-biblical usage, the-following chapters will deal with Yahweh as a shepherd, Israel as his flock, other leaders who are named shepherd, and finally, the Messianic shepherd.

It will be noted that this study deals largely with the primary Biblical sources rather than with secondary sources. We were able to locate but three discussions of the subject at hand of …

The Way Of Salvation Under The Old Covenant As It Is Revealed In The Psalter, Richard Hoyer Jun 1956

The Way Of Salvation Under The Old Covenant As It Is Revealed In The Psalter, Richard Hoyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is not enough--if not untrue--simply to say that the faithful of the Old Testament were saved by faith in the Christ to come as we are saved by faith in Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ who has come, without answering the- problems that their incomplete revelation raises. What exactly did they mean by “salvat1on?” If they knew of no heaven, was their concept of salvation limited to a deliverance from the evils of life or did it go beyond? What was the answer to sin? In what manner did they, or could they receive the mercy and forgiveness of …

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange Jun 1956

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It might be well to emphasize the fact that this is an exegetical study of sanctification; therefore sanctification as defined in this paper may or may not always agree with the other uses of sanctification in different theological disciplines.

An Investigation Of The Factors Of Persuasion In The Sermons Of Dr Walter A Maier, Lester Zeitler Jun 1956

An Investigation Of The Factors Of Persuasion In The Sermons Of Dr Walter A Maier, Lester Zeitler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this investigation, however, is confined only to the preaching on the program; more exactly, the preaching of Dr. Walter A. Maier. The specific purpose is to search out those factors of persuasion in the radio sermons of Dr. Maier which may so largely help to account for his success in preaching the Gospel. The object is to figure out the secret of his effectiveness as Andrew Blackwood suggests: "Study the methods of the radio preacher whom your thoughtful laymen enjoy, and figure out the secrets of his effectiveness. You will find that he depends mainly on being …

Justification By Faith In Modern Theology, Henry Hamann Jun 1956

Justification By Faith In Modern Theology, Henry Hamann

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The study here presented the writer hopes to make part of a larger work, an examination of how far Lutheran teaching on justification agrees with the New Testament as a whole, specific attention being given all along to modern criticism on this head. (Modern signifies approximately the period from the end of the first Great War to the present day.) It is not enough to show nowadays that Lutheran teaching agrees with St. Paul. It has to be shown that it agrees with St. John, with the Jesus of the Synoptic Gospels, and with the rest of the literature of …

The Synagogue And Its Influences, Daniel Brockhoff Jun 1956

The Synagogue And Its Influences, Daniel Brockhoff

Bachelor of Divinity

“Was the synagogue greatly influenced by the surrounding cultures in which it existed, and was the synagogue influential to any extent upon the surroundings in which it existed'?" The purpose of this thesis is to give some directives in order that a correct and factual answer might be obtained to those questions.

The Activity Of Angels In The Ministry Of Jesus, John E. Graudin Jun 1956

The Activity Of Angels In The Ministry Of Jesus, John E. Graudin

Bachelor of Divinity

The question this thesis attempts to answer is, "What were the activities of the angels during the earthly ministry of Jesus?” The scope of this thesis lies within the range of that question. It has been my aim to draw together the known material about the angels during this period, thus allowing us to get a better overview of their activities and importance.

A Theological Study Of Baptism And The Lord's Supper As Expressed At The Hanover Convention Of The Lutheran World Federation, Paul Martin Volz Jun 1956

A Theological Study Of Baptism And The Lord's Supper As Expressed At The Hanover Convention Of The Lutheran World Federation, Paul Martin Volz

Bachelor of Divinity

The study which here presents the theology of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper expressed at the Hannover Convention of the Lutheran World Federation is an outgrowth of the writer's concern to know what was said on theological matters by members of the Lutheran World Federation assembled in their first official convention as a federation of Lutherans.

The Doctrine Of Sanctification In The Christian And Missionary Alliance, Raymond H. Davis Jun 1956

The Doctrine Of Sanctification In The Christian And Missionary Alliance, Raymond H. Davis

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is the will endeavor to set forth the official doctrine of the Alliance as it is found in the official documents of the Society and in the writings of Dr. Simpson and Dr. Pardington. We will look briefly into the background of these men, and will make an exegetical study of the Scriptures on which they based their doctrine. 1 will also endeavor to express the doctrine of sanctification that is being taught by those who do not hold to the views of Simpson and Pardington, as it is being taught in the majority of Alliance Churches today, …

An Historical Survey Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old And New Testaments And Intertestamental Periods, Ralph Frederick Juengel Jun 1956

An Historical Survey Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old And New Testaments And Intertestamental Periods, Ralph Frederick Juengel

Bachelor of Divinity

Since the Holy Spirit is only referred to explicitly three times in the Old Testament, the reader is amazed that such a jump can be made by John, or Christ for that matter, when speaking about the Holy Spirit, without having to explain just whom they mean. The Jews never take issue with the term in the New Testament. Apparently there must have been some doctrine or teaching prevalent in Christ's day, upon which the fuller revelation is based. The problem of this thesis is to try and find a bridge for the gap between the periods. This demands a …

Aspects Of The Relationship Of Faith To Conscience In Luther's Sermons, 1528-1532, William Arthur Olsen Jun 1956

Aspects Of The Relationship Of Faith To Conscience In Luther's Sermons, 1528-1532, William Arthur Olsen

Bachelor of Divinity

A brief study revealed numerous examples of the close relationship Luther established between faith and conscience in both his formal theological writings and his sermons as they have come down to us. This thesis seeks on a 1imited scale to establish and delineate that relationship between faith and conscience in the theology of Luther.

Both terms about which the thesis revolves are very prominent in the writings of Luther. That “faith” is a decisive and frequently used word in his theology seems to require no documentation.

A Study Of The Temple In The Gospel Of John, Harold E. Remus Jun 1956

A Study Of The Temple In The Gospel Of John, Harold E. Remus

Bachelor of Divinity

This study of the Temple in the Gospel of John indicates the fulfillment of the Old Testament Temple and its cultus in Jesus Christ. Although this is a Johannine study, it has been possible to take account of sayings about the Temple in the other three Gospels and to show their significance in a way that would have been impossible had the Fourth Gospel never been written.

The Divine Love Motif In Hosea And Jeremiah, Norman Charles Habel Jun 1956

The Divine Love Motif In Hosea And Jeremiah, Norman Charles Habel

Bachelor of Divinity

The main objective of this study then. is to outline clearly both the encounter and the message of each prophet over against the love of God, and to understand the basic concepts of the divine love motif as found in these two authors . On the basis of this outline certain leading conclusions can be formed by comparing the principle themes in each writer. In this way the basic unity and the significant diversity of their outlook can be summarized.

The Anthropology Of Communism, Arthur Simon Jun 1956

The Anthropology Of Communism, Arthur Simon

Bachelor of Divinity

This essay is an investigation of the communist view of man and an attempt to indicate a few implications of the same for the Christian Church. The topic itself is a broad one. The available material, both primary and secondary, comprises too long a list for the research this writer was able to do. The bibliography will indicate, however, that at least some of the basic primary writings were consulted as well as a number of the better commentaries on communism.
