Many characters and stories have been interpreted over the past few thousand years. Humans are innate storytellers and make connections through various communication methods. Heroes and villains have affected many lives and given people a lens through which to view the world. The perception of stories and their characters in the visual media may not be as subjective as many people think. Occupational therapy (OT) is an allied healthcare profession that is uniquely situated at the intersection of art and science. OT seeks to improve quality of life by addressing occupations, or daily activities that are meaningful and purposeful (Nelson, 2014). In order to accomplish these goals, occupational therapists (OTs) must use design thinking through the lens of evidence-based practice. This artistic creativity paired with well-researched scientific findings mimics the visual nature of this guide, which prioritizes this need for alternative representation of the sciences.

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the ways the printed word in James Joyce’s Ulysses opens new and alternative paths towards the interpretation of the text. We show how it induces multiple chains of associations beyond the act of reading, which start at the visual, spatialized sequencing and contiguity of letters, words and sentences, their layout on the page, or the persistence or absence of punctuation.

Successful adaptation to the microgravity environment of space and re-adaptation to gravity on earth requires recalibration of visual and vestibular signals. Despite decades of experimentation, motion sickness, spatial disorientation, reorientation illusions and degraded visuomotor performance continue to impact the availability and effectiveness of astronauts. We have found that incorporating jitter of the vantage point into visual displays produces more compelling illusions of self-motion (vection), despite generating greater sensory conflicts. We will discuss a series of ground-based experiments that examine a range of possible explanations for this phenomenon. This study is a follow-up of previous studies we conducted on the visible articulatory correlates of French prosodic contrastive focus. A two speaker analysis using an automatic lip-tracking device had shown that these correlates existed and were used in visual perception. However the articulatory strategies depended on the speaker. The purpose of this study was thus to extend the analysis to other speakers, examine the similarities and variabilities and try to identify global tendencies. We recorded five speakers of French with a 3D optical tracker using a 13 sentence (subject-verb-object) corpus and four focus conditions (S, V, O or neutral). …

Experiments examined the accuracy of visual touchdown point perception during oblique descents (1.5^o-15^o) toward a ground plane consisting of (a) randomly positioned dots, (b) a runway outline, or (c) a grid. Participants judged whether the perceived touchdown point was above or below a probe that appeared at a random position following each display. Although judgments were unacceptably imprecise and biased for moving dot and runway displays, accurate and unbiased judgments were found for griddisplays. Processing visual information about objects in our environment is an essential and widely used skill. However, recent research in change blindness suggests that humans are remarkably poor at detecting certain types of changes to objects. In particular, changes to the configuration of an object's parts are detected quicker and more accurately than changes to the shape of the parts or a switching of parts. The implication of this finding is that information regarding the layout or configuration of an object is better encoded than finer details, like part shape. Coherent Perspective Jitter Induces Visual Illusions Of Self-Motion, Stephen A. Palmisano, Darren Burke, Robert S Allison

Previous research by Palmisano, Gillam and Blackburn (2000) found that adding coherent perspective jitter to constant velocity radial flow improved visually induced illusions of self-motion (known as vection). This was a surprising finding, because unlike pure radial flow, this jittering radial flow should have generated sustained visual-vestibular conflicts - previously thought to always reduce/impair vection. The current experiments attempted to ascertain the essential stimulus features for this jitter advantage for vection by examining three novel types of jitter display. While adding incoherent jitter to radial flow was found to impair vection, adding coherent non-perspective jitter had little effect on this …
