Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
English Faculty Research
This dissertation juxtaposes the romantic modal treatment of powerful, admired women which canonical male authors and feminist authors and critics construct with those constructed by contemporary women for the visual mass media of video, broadcast television, and computer. The discourse of the former produces the figure of a fragmented woman who is rare, supernatural, marginalized, and impossible. The discourse of the latter produces the figure of a psychologized woman who is typical, natural, mainstream, and possible. To examine the discourse of impossibility, I use three canonical works: Augustine's Confessions; Chretien de Troyes' Perceval; and Dante's Divine Comedy. I also survey …

Anywhere But Home: The Life And Work Of Barrie Stavis, Daniel Larner

Barrie Stavis Th e American playwright Barrie Stavis is a paradox in his own country. “A prophet without honor” may exaggerate the case, but Yugoslavian critic Dragan Klai'c does see Stavis as a subtle but important kind of prophet, whose work precedes European efforts to reestablish a theatre of commitment:
"to separate values, moral principles, and simple human concerns from compromised ideological projects. Disappointment about European developments, the sense of danger caused by racism, fanatical politicians, and ecological nightmares, bring theater back as a field of argumentative, activist aesthetics. Nothing old-fashioned, romantic, 68ish in all that—only a sense of moral …

Few And Far Between, Dick Barnes
Few And Far Between, Dick Barnes
Ahsahta Press
Something about Barnes’s poems makes you read quickly, slowly, then quickly again. There is an energy to his writing, an ebb and flow that counts word for word and makes each poem a complete moment of place, time, and feeling. He takes our world and ourselves and tries to get at how we live, and sometimes don’t live. Robert Mezey said of Dick Barnes, “His heart is pure, he tells us in one poem, and it is—we trust his voice because the rhythm doesn’t falter, the words ring true, have the unmistakable sound of truth.”

Early Land Settlement In Illawarra 1804-1861, Benjamin Lindsay, Michael K. Organ, A. P. Doyle
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
The writer of this story was born in Illawarra over 76 years ago [c1857], and during his childhood and youth he shared in the experiences and struggles of the pioneer settlers in that rich and beautiful portion of the State. In this story he has attempted to give a detailed account of the manner in which the Crown Lands of Illawarra were disposed of, for the information of all who are interested in matters pertaining to Illawarra, and, more particularly, the large body of farmers now occupying those lands, many of whom are descendants of the pioneers who came from …

The Menzies Family Of Minamurra House, Jamberoo, Michael K. Organ, Arthur Cousins
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
In January 1839 a young Scottish couple – Dr. Robert Menzies and his recent bride Margaret (nee Tindell) - arrived in Sydney aboard the Earl Durham. Like so many other free immigrants of the time, they had journeyed to New South Wales with the intention of settling on a farm and making a future for themselves and their family there. They had high hopes of perhaps even acquiring a small fortune within a decade or so, selling up at a profit, and retiring to their beloved family and friends back home in Scotland. However, such was not to be …
Rex Beach, Abe C. Ravitz
Rex Beach, Abe C. Ravitz
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
One apocalyptic adventure marked the productive life and prolific literary career of Rex Ellingwood Beach (1877-1949), novelist, journalist, pioneer screenwriter, and sportsman: at the turn of the century as a spirited twenty-three-year-old spoiling for adventure and seeking quick wealth, he joined the mass of frenzied humanity heading for the gold fields of the Klondike. Though a fortune in nuggets eluded him and though his land speculation never brought the truly big score, Rex Beach discovered something more valuable than “gold in the pan": Alaska.
