For more than a decade, the University of South Florida Library's Oral History Program has sought to develop cost-effective, open-source solutions to improve workflow management, increase public access, and preserve oral history collections. Recently, it established two open-source solutions to meet these goals. Bull-OH-Base enables Oral History Program staff to manage its many oral history projects and associated data in a secure and efficient manner. OHPi (its oral history player interface) offers researchers the ability to access and search its collections through a web-based application that synchronizes audio and video files with a full-text transcript. For a little more than eight months in 1996–1997, Calirican Rafa Negron promoted his queer Latino nightclub “Pan Dulce” in San Francisco. A concoction of multiple genders, sexualities, and aesthetic styles, Pan Dulce created an opportunity for making urban space and claiming visibilities and identities among queer Latinas and Latinos through music, performance, and dance. Building on the region’s decades-old lgbt/queer history, and specifically diasporic queer Puerto Rican and Caribbean cultures, Pan Dulce became a powerful site for latinaje: the multilayered hybrid process of creating Latina and Latino worlds and cultures from below. This essay considers the founding, development, and dissolution in San Francisco of the Gay Latino Alliance, one of the first organizations of its kind in the nation, and examines how its members negotiated the racial, gender, and sexual politics of the period. It discusses specifically the coming together of GALA’s founders, GALA’s negotiation between the “Latino” and “gay” social and political cultures, and GALA’s dissolution in the midst of gender and sex conflicts. To explore the intersectional dynamics of their racial, sexual, and gendered work and leisure, the essay relies partly upon surviving documents and heavily upon the memories of …
