The number of journals dedicated solely to the publishing of research in the fields of typography and visual communication is slowly growing. However, very little of this material finds its way back into the studio at undergraduate level. Further, research published in discipline-focussed peer-reviewed journals does ‘not tend to be highly valued by those engaged in practice.’ As a result of this, as Robin Kinross has written, ‘the academic discussion of typography, and design in general, is too often hermetic and unreal: in unholy partnership with the proud anti-intellectualism of many practicing designers’. Designed and installed the exhibit 'Building a Bosque: 10 Years of Habitat Restoration at Rio Bosque Wetlands Park' at UTEP’s Centennial Museum. This exhibit celebrated a 10-year collaboration between the University's Center for Environmental Resource Management and other local entities in caring for the Wetlands and helping restore it to the plant and wildlife habitat it once was prior to the channelization of the Rio Grande in the mid-1930s. I designed the exhibit 'To the Ends of the Earth: UTEP at the Poles' at UTEP’s Centennial Museum. This exhibit displayed the photography and research findings of the IPY-ROAM (International Polar Year–Research and Educational Opportunities in Antarctica for Minorities) program hosted by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), especially as they pertain to global warming. 'Pitch Black' by Anthony Horton and Youme Landowne is a graphic tale I designed. Published by El Paso's Cinco Puntos Press, 'Pitch Black' was honored by the American Librarian Association as one of 2008's top ten graphic novels for young adults. 'In the Weave: Bhutanese Textiles and National Identity' logo and informational wall panels designed for the exhibit at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. The photography used in these panels was taken by 2008 Guggenheim Fellow and New Mexico State University Professor David Taylor. I isolated and monotoned all the hand-painted Buddhist symbols used in the panels from a single shot of Taylor's taken of a Bhutanese temple wall.

Designed a gig poster for the September 25 Beck show at the Abraham Chavez Theatre. The downloadable file here does not depict well that the poster was screenprinted with metallic gold ink on speckletone brown French paper. A photo of me with the poster appeared in Vanity Fair online in an article about Beck's "secret" show he played after the scheduled Abraham Chavez performance. Among other things, The Frontera Land Alliance helps save local arroyos (dry creek beds or gulches that temporarily fill with water seasonally after heavy rains) from development. The poster downloadable here is one of many I designed in different colors for 'Graphic Content: Art of the New Music Poster'. The poster was hand stenciled and spray painted for an exhibit at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. The traveling exhibition was curated by Dirk Fowler, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Texas Tech University School of Art and contained more than 100 posters by 25 different artists highlighting the growing importance of the rock poster in contemporary art.

I designed the poster 'Save El Paso’s Arroyos: There are Over 1,000 Reasons Why We Should'. Copies of the poster were sold at the Hal Marcus Gallery’s 'Save the Arroyos' exhibit. This grassroots art show ran from July 27 and was sponsored by the Frontera Land Alliance to raise awareness of the importance of keeping El Paso’s arroyos free from development.
