Labour Intellectuals In Australia: Modes, Traditions, Generations, Transformations, Terry Irving, Sean Scalmer
Labour Intellectuals In Australia: Modes, Traditions, Generations, Transformations, Terry Irving, Sean Scalmer
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
The article begins with a discussion of labour intellectuals as knowledge producers in labour institutions, and of the labour public in which this distinctive kind of intellectual emerges. Next we construct a typology of the three modes of labour intellectual that were proclaimed and remade from the 1890s (the 'movement', the 'representational', and the 'revolutionary'), and identify the broad historical processes (certification, polarization, and contraction) of the labour public.

Creative Writing And An Overlooked Population, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

As a regional institution, our university's historic mission is to train area teachers who must operate under the auspices of the Kentucky Educational Reform Act, which mandates extensive writing portfolios i Grades 4,7, and 12. While these portfolios may include as much as 50% creative writing or work employing creative writing techniques, a recent survey of teachers responsible for guiding students revealed that not a single teacher had ever taken a course in creative writing pedagogy and only a handful had even had any formal training in creative writing. We suggested that this lack of teacher training was one reason …

The Ideology Of Terror: Why We Will Never Win The 'War', Katie Rose Guest Pryal
The Ideology Of Terror: Why We Will Never Win The 'War', Katie Rose Guest Pryal
Katie Rose Guest Pryal
A few days after the criminal attacks on the World Trade Center, President George W. Bush declared a metaphorical war on terror. The word “war” was once again applied to a nebulous concept in hopes of rallying support to Bush’s plans. Had Bush declared war on “terrorism,” a noun that denotes physical acts of violence, the war would have remained attached to the material world. By declaring war on “terror,” America’s enemy became ephemeral and eternal. Using Althusser's theory of ideology, this article demonstrates how the public rhetoric of terror created an “ideology of terror” that created support for Bush's …

A Very Special Christmas, Hal Charles
A Very Special Christmas, Hal Charles
Charlie Sweet
For more than an hour Alyssa had been sitting in front of our picture window without moving. In the darkened pane I couldn't help but notice the contrasting reflections-the bright lights of the Christmas tree and the hollow , unblinking eyes of my nine-year-old daughter. I could have told myself that she was mesmerized by the snowflakes drifting down like angel wings, but that would have been lying
The Black Body As Souvenir In American Lynching, Harvey Young
The Black Body As Souvenir In American Lynching, Harvey Young
Harvey Young
This essay reads the collection of body parts, in the aftermath of the lynching spectacle, as souvenirs, fetish objects, and performance remains. Along the way, it spotlights the importance of narrative to the souvenir, challenges the notion that performance disappears through an emphasis on its remains, and asserts that embodied experiences of the past can be accessed in the present.

Haitian Creole, also known as Kreyòl, is a member of the French-based creole language groups with a considerable part of its lexicon coming directly from seventeenth century French. Its grammar differs from French, however, and reflects closely the West African languages, such as Ewe, Fon, Yoruba, and Ibo. Kreyòl is similar to the creoles spoken in the French overseas departments of Martinique and Guadeloupe, as well as in Dominica, Saint Lucia, and parts of Trinidad.

Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.
Almost two millennia of confrontation, vilification and recrimination marked the relationship of the offspring Christianity and its mother religion, Judaism from the first century. Now, a new chapter of the encounter has opened since Vatican II with a papal declaration on the relation of the Church to Judaism and to non-Christian religions. A meaningful dialogue of mutual respect was pursued that led to the apologetic reconciliation and positive reorientation to the common Biblical tradition of Jews and Christians. The encounter has now changed from past relationship of disputation and intolerance to seeking understanding from the ground of faith in canonical …
The Problem Of Moral Dirigisme: A New Argument Against Moralistic Legislation, Mario Rizzo
The Problem Of Moral Dirigisme: A New Argument Against Moralistic Legislation, Mario Rizzo
Mario Rizzo
This Article applies a theory of rational choice to moral decisionmaking. In this theory, agents act primarily on local and personal knowledge to instantiate moral principles, virtues and moral goods. The State may seek to prevent them from acting as they independently determine by prescribing or proscribing certain conduct by formal legal means. If its purpose is to ensure that people act morally or become better persons, we call this “moral dirigisme.” Our thesis is that the need to use decentralized knowledge to determine the moral status of an act makes the task of the moral dirigiste well-neigh impossible. The …
