In 2006 the Association of American Colleges and Universities surveyed 306 businesses to determine the most valuable skills that institutions of higher learning should be teaching, and the Top Three were (in order) teamwork, critical thinking, and communication. Yet in 2010 when IBM’s Institute for Business Values asked 1500 chief executives what leadership competency they championed above all others, voters selected none of the winners from three years before. Instead, the new American idol was creativity.

In the 1770's before Daniel Boone finally settled at Boonesborough, he made many forays into "Cantucke," mentally mapping the territory, taking what game he could, and establishing relationships with the Shawnee and settlers. In other words, the exhibit and web site provide a space for white people to perceive their whiteness in the contexts of socialization, material culture, and economic location; and then to begin to disavow it within their attitudes, behaviors, and identities. Recognizing and disavowing whiteness concurrently may appear contradictory.
