British Military Theatre In New York In 1780-81, Jared Brown Oct 1982

British Military Theatre In New York In 1780-81, Jared Brown

Jared Brown

From October 20, 1774, when the Continental Congress passed a resolution outlawing theatrical activities in America, until the formation of the Lindsay-Wall troupe that began performing illegally in Maryland in 1781 and, under the management of Dennis Ryan, shifted its base of operations to New York in 1783, the theatre in America was in a near-dormant state. The only significant exceptions to this condition were the productions of the occupying British military in various American localities, and a few productions by American military officers given in response. According to the strategy devised by the British high command in America, when …

Basic. Fortran.S-Algol. And Pascal Benchmarks On Microcomputers. Including The Effects Of Floating Point Processor Support., Marcus R. Wigan

Marcus R Wigan

A straightforward set of short and simple benchmarks has been used to examine the relative performance of a wide range of mainframe, mini, and micro systems. Comparable sets ot BASIC, Pascal. FORTRAN and Structured Algol codes are given In a series of Tables and Figures. Special attention has been paid to the role of additional processors to assist In the execution of the benchmark codes. These Include a 6809 used to accellerate APPLE-Pascal 1.1 p-code and an AMD 9511 to accelerate BASIC-E and Structured Algol semi-complied code. Two AMD 9511 versions of MicroSoft and FORTRAN FORLIB are included. The overlap …

The Care Of Things: Perspective On A Practical Problem, Sidney F. Huttner

Sidney F. Huttner

Owners and collectors care deeply about the antiques, heirlooms, and other object they possess: books, furniture, photographs, Bibles, diaries, china -- and many, many other kinds of "things," many not rare and many not valuable. This presentation was an attempt to put that preservation passion, and the vast number of hints, pieces of advice, and instructions that abound, into a context that helps match concern with appropriate technique.

Prosodic Templates, Morphemic Templates, And Morphemic Tiers, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1982

Prosodic Templates, Morphemic Templates, And Morphemic Tiers, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

In recent work (McCarthy 1979, 1981; Halle and Vergnaud 1980; Harris 1980; Marantz, to appear; Yip, to appear) a new model of morphology has been emerging, one in which nonlinear phonological representations play a central role. This model, which I will refer to as “prosodic,” was originally developed in an analysis of the complex system of nonconcatenative morphology found in Semitic languages, Classical Arabic in particular. It has since been extended to other, typologically and genetically quite different sorts of phenomena. In this paper, we will see still further empirical consequences of the adoption of this theory.

Nonlinear Phonology: An Overview, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1982

Nonlinear Phonology: An Overview, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

The last five or six years have seen a substantial change in the nature of research into phonological theory. This change has been marked by the development of several new theoretical frameworks, for which we can use the somewhat awkward and misleading term "nonlinear phonology". In this short essay, I hope to give an introduction to the various ideas underlying nonlinear phonology, as well as to provide an outline of the mechanics of formal analysis under this rubric. Because of rigid constraints of space, I cannot do justice to every viewpoint, nor can I present full-fledged arguments. But I do …

Prosodic Structure And Expletive Infixation, John J. Mccarthy Jan 1982

Prosodic Structure And Expletive Infixation, John J. Mccarthy

John J. McCarthy

An analysis of English Expletive Infixation (as in fan-fuckin-tastic) in terms of a metrical theory of prosody is presented. It is shown that the major environment for Expletive Infixation—immediately before a stressed syllable—follows from independently motivated characteristics of this theory. Further support for this metrical theory is adduced from infixation in words with dactylic stress alternation and with internal stress-neutral junctures, and from the subordination of stress in forms after infixation.

Understanding Judicial Discretion, Barry Hoffmaster Dec 1981

Understanding Judicial Discretion, Barry Hoffmaster

C. Barry Hoffmaster

The main aim of this paper is to clarify the dispute over judicial discretion by distinguishing the different senses in which claims about judicial discretion can be understood and by examining the arguments for these various interpretations. Three different levels of dispute need to be recognized. The first concerns whether judges actually do exercise discretion, the second involves whether judges are entitled to exercise discretion, and the third is about the proper institutional role of judges. In this context, the views of Dworkin, Raz, Perry, Greenawalt, and Sartorius are examined. Finally, it is suggested that a resolution of the judicial …

Trilce, Poema Xxxii, Marianella Machado Dec 1981

Trilce, Poema Xxxii, Marianella Machado

Marianella P. Machado

Poem XXXII, Trilce, written by the Peruvian poet César Vallejo, appeals to the sounds of words and onomatopoeic expressions (rather than to their actual meaning) to both move and shock the listener and make him/her aware of the particular situation the work presents. The extensive use of nonsense words and harsh sounds makes this work very difficult, if not impossible, to translate without altering the effect of the poet’s intention.

Two opposite dimensions are dealt with in the poem. The first, reality or the outer world, is symbolized by heat and warmth. It expresses chaos, oppression, injustice, and the absurd …
