Oral Fluency Through Writing, Janae Campbell, Stephen J. Moody
Oral Fluency Through Writing, Janae Campbell, Stephen J. Moody
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Learning a second language is difficult. While learning, writing and speaking are treated as though they are two totally separate things. It is evident that people do not speak the same way they write, but that does not mean that speaking and writing should be divided. What if it was possible to create written assignments that would help increase the oral fluency of the learner? This would make home-work assignments more efficient by optimizing how students use their time studying at home. It would take away the pressure of having to learn all verbal communications within the confines of the …

Change For Women, Change The World, Kiana Stewart, Dr. Daryl Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My project goal was to translate from French to English significant chapters of a study on gender-based violence (GBV) in Senegal documented by Dr. Fatou Diop Sall. Dr Sall is the head coordinator of GESTES, a Senegalese research group focused on gender equality. A previous group of BYU students and ORCA recipients translated sections of the document that focused on domestic violence, and published the translation with the WomanStats Project, which is the largest statistical database regarding the status of women in the world (Hudson, 2015). The chapters I translated deal with GBV in different spheres, specifically educational spaces (schools, …

That '70s Show: A Realistic Depiction Of Sexism, Meleah Hartnett
3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing
Overview: I have been a loyal viewer of the hit sitcom, That ‘70s Show, for years. In total, I have probably watched the entire series two or three times. However, it was not until recently that it struck me how sexist the show was. Upon first watching That ‘70s Show, I thought it was a surface-level sitcom celebrating the colorful and hazy 1970s. After rewatching and evaluating the stances presented in multiple episodes, however, I see that it is more representative of society’s view on women than I originally thought. I believe that both the subtle and obvious sexism in …
Mathematics, Writing, And Rhetoric: Deep Thinking In First-Year Learning Communities, Christine Von Renesse, Jennifer Digrazia
Mathematics, Writing, And Rhetoric: Deep Thinking In First-Year Learning Communities, Christine Von Renesse, Jennifer Digrazia
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Through the process of combining two seemingly unlikely bedfellows, mathematics and composition, two instructors explain how rhetoric connects the art of writing and the art of doing mathematics in an inquiry-based learning community. Combining these two courses in a learning community enables students and instructors to practice the deep thinking valued by each instructor and by a traditional liberal arts education while challenging both our and our students’ individual, disciplinary, and rhetorical conventions and beliefs. Using student writing from our course, our assignments from mathematics and composition, and survey evaluation results, we demonstrate how engaging in inquiry-based education provides unconventional …
