A Meta-Analysis Of Quantitative Collecting Techniques For Spiders, Eliana Eldridge, Joshua Hicks, Sean O'Keefe
2022 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
Quantitative sampling of organisms is often used to provide information in ecological studies, monitor populations, and aid in biodiversity projects. Many studies involve the quantitative sampling of spiders. In this meta-analysis study, 207 peer-reviewed journal articles formed the basis of an initial data set for a quantitative analysis of spider collection techniques. Data collected included country of study, mode of study, trapping techniques used, spider diversity, and number of specimens collected. Our meta-analysis gathered research articles that included 33 different countries of study. Trapping techniques greatly vary depending on the habitat in which spiders dwell. These were divided into aerial, …

Mechanisms In Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru
Mechanisms In Ecology, Viorel Pâslaru
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
New mechanistic philosophy has not examined explanations in ecology although they are based extensively on describing mechanisms responsible for phenomena under scrutiny. This chapter uses the example of research on the shrub Lonicera maackii (Amur honeysuckle) to scrutinize individual-level mechanisms that are generally accepted and used in ecology and confronts them with the minimal account of mechanisms. Individual-level mechanisms are for a phenomenon, are hierarchical, and absent entities play a role in their functioning. They are distinguished by the role played by properties in determining activities and organization. The chapter also considers the experimental methods for discovery of individual-level mechanisms, …

NEWSLETTER c Reconstructing John Mum's First Public Lecture, Sacramento, 1876 by Steve Pauly, Pleasant Hill, California (Editor's Note: In our previous issue, Steve Pauley's article placed John Muir's first public talk in context. Wmere is his re-creation of some sections of the talk.) n the beginning of the long glacial winter, the lofty Sierra seems to have consisted of one vast undulated wave, in which a thousand separate mountains, with their domes and spires, their innumerable canons and lake basins, lay concealed. In the development of these, the Master Builder chose for a tool, not the earthquake nor lightning to …

Disciple Preaching In The First Generation: An Ecological Study, Dwight E. Stevenson
Disciple Preaching In The First Generation: An Ecological Study, Dwight E. Stevenson
ACU Brown Library Monograph Series
Based on the Reed lectures from 1969, Stevenson examines the Old-World origins and the impact of the early American frontier on early Disciples preaching up to the time of the Civil War. He notes the preaching forms that early leaders rejected—mere flowery or rhetorical messages and harangues against established Protestant sects—and what was accepted in its place. Stevenson's essays draw into sharp relief the difference between debate and preaching, a line that has often been blurred within the Stone-Campbell tradition.
