“One can live in the shadow of an idea without grasping it” {HOTD 97). When Elizabeth Bowen was born in 1899, the Protestant Ascendancy was living in the shadow of the past. After nearly a century of prosperity in Ireland, the tables were turning on them. Their wealth and power were waning. The Catholic Irish were rebelling. The future of Ireland was in turmoil.
