The Uses Of Language In The Portrayal Of Character In Mansfield Park, Anne Chadwick
The Uses Of Language In The Portrayal Of Character In Mansfield Park, Anne Chadwick
Theses : Honours
My study of characterisation in Mansfield Park seeks to advance the field and scope of current literary criticism. Recent developments in narrative criticism have included other fields of study in order to elucidate the assertions and observations proposed by literary studies. The findings of traditional literary criticism will be validated and extended in my examination of Mansfield Park, through the application of linguistic theories. My investigation of characterisation intends to assert the significance of linguistic theories in the study of literature.
Fractured Certainties: Epistemology And Ontology In David Malouf's Child's Play, The Great World And Remembering Babylon, Chris Lyon
Theses : Honours
This thesis is an exploration of the way in which David Malouf develops ideas of epistemology and ontology in three of his novels. The novels discussed are Child's Play (1982), The Great World (1990) and Remembering Babylon (1993). Of particular concern here are the different ways in which figures in the text are constructed as having imperfect and sometimes contradictory systems of making sense of their world.

Convict Teachers And The Children Of Western Australia, 1850-1890, Shirley M. Leahy
Theses : Honours
This dissertation aims to examine the relationship between convict schoolmasters and the children of Swan River Colony over the 40 year period from 1850 to 1890, Fearing detrimental effects on the lives of their children, the majority of colonists believed that importation of convict labourers threatened the well-being of the younger generation morally, physically, and intellectually. These fears, based on popular perception of the convict as a perpetrator of evil, were further influenced by a voluble media. Published articles and letters to the newspapers called for government protection for settlers and their families from convict depredations. Public apprehension deepened with …
St. Juan De Dios, 1495-1550 The Patron Saint Of Nurses, Christopher Churchouse
St. Juan De Dios, 1495-1550 The Patron Saint Of Nurses, Christopher Churchouse
Theses : Honours
For any profession to develop, grow and plan for the future, it is imperative that all members know from whence they have come. Nurses', however, do not generally consider this to be an important aspect to their professional development, and hence have focused more on empirical or experimental research. Whilst much literature has been written on nursing history, it has focused primarily on its founding women and its inception from the mid nineteenth century when a more structured training evolved. This study, therefore, goes beyond this period of time and examines a man who played an equally important role in …
Ratbags On The Fringe: Exploring Feminism Through Crime, Danielle Brown
Ratbags On The Fringe: Exploring Feminism Through Crime, Danielle Brown
Theses : Honours
This dissertation considers how feminist crime fiction, can transform a traditionally male dominated genre. Contemporary feminist crime writers reject the codified masculine crime genre to create ever-expanding spaces for literary representation. I concentrate on three texts which are ordered as a progression. Firstly, I explore the conservative "male." writing of Jennifer Rowe in The Makeover Murders. I then go on to The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender by Marele Day which privileges a concern with the socio-political position of women and their access to socio-political power. The last text, Finola Moorhead's Still Murder, is a radical work of feminist …
