This project explores an unusual ornithological debate between 19th-century naturalists John James Audubon and Charles Waterton on the olfaction of vultures. Both naturalists involved were also artists—certainly more than they were scientists—and prone to artifice and performative amplification. This article examines the rhetorical dynamics of this niche but sensational debate on avian olfaction, and its problematic influence on scientific progress.

Mais la perte d’un monde naturel nous oblige à gérer notre environnement en tant qu’environnement artificiel. Face à cette mutation profonde du concept même de nature, l’art opère un processus d’artification, renouvelant la nature dans de nouvelles formes néoarchéologiques et de nouvelles esthétiques, par le « passage du non-art en art ».

Nous souhaitons proposer dans cet article une réflexion sur l'écriture des articles scientifiques, en défendant l'idée que les textes rendant compte de recherches doivent être considérés comme des textes à part entière, c'est-à-dire comme des environnements ayant leur propre cohérence, qui échappe en partie à leurs auteurs. En partant de cette hypothèse, nous adoptons pour notre propre article une forme qui donne une large part aux jeux d'échos entre des citations, issues de textes volontairement très différents.

Ôde à la liberté et à l’espace, « Soleil d’azur » est une invitation à une contemplation profondément active : des haies clôturées jusqu’aux dunes infinies tant désirées, nous suivons le parcours d’un regard poétique qui transforme le paysage au fil de son chemin. Progressivement, l’exploitation humaine de l’espace cède sa place à une nature sauvage : le pin se redresse, l’horizon se dégage et la vérité, lentement, se dévoile. Enfin, le soleil n’est plus brulure mais lumière.

Il dormait dans les creux entre les roches, prenait le soleil sur les dalles, se cachait derrière les pierres et avait ainsi appris par cœur toute la gamme des gris et des bruns. La plupart des animaux de la montagne près de Barcelone s’étaient contentés d’une seule couleur. Lui, par contre, en faisant un effort gigantesque, arrivait à presser fortement ses rugosités pour obtenir une peau plus foncée en plein soleil. À relaxer de nouveau et récupérer un ton plus sablonneux au crépuscule. Et il en était fier.

In this visual essay, I explore the concept of silence as an interpretative phenomenon. In preparation for an inquiry into instructors’ and students’ experiences of silence in class discussions, I readied myself for the study by conducting a self-study of what silence meant to me. My rationale was two-fold: a researcher acknowledges and includes biases as part of the research in interpretive inquiry, and I was at odds with how to describe the disconnect between my personal appreciation for silences and my discomfort with silence in the classroom. "Pacific Oyster" is part of a series titled Invaders, which focuses on non-native species of creatures and seaweeds which have taken over certain areas of the UK shoreline. The Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has been dominating native oyster populations since it was introduced in the late 19th century as an alternative to the already declining native oyster population. Harvesting of the wild Pacific Oyster has been encouraged in order to keep numbers under control.
