A Crow And A Hanger, Kelsey Ann-Morgan Livingston Jan 2016

A Crow And A Hanger, Kelsey Ann-Morgan Livingston

LSU Master's Theses

A Crow and A Hanger is a body of work that explores and illustrates the nature of life and death through the use of mixed-media drawing and printmaking techniques. My intention for this work, and this thesis paper, is to explain my thought process and how the imagery came to be. For me it is not at all important for every viewer to fully understand each image and the thoughts that went into the body as a whole. I let the images and their titles lead the viewer in a general direction and allow for their personal history and biases …

This Is Only Temporary, Melanie Robyn Wall Jan 2016

This Is Only Temporary, Melanie Robyn Wall

LSU Master's Theses

This is only Temporary examines my personal history of homes as reimagined spaces. The series of prints in the exhibition depicts reconstructed memories of houses. These visual narratives give context to the installation constructed from handmade paper and raw materials. The framework is reminiscent of housing plans that converge into a labyrinth. Participants actively engage the space, navigating the confined structure. A playful nature runs throughout the prints and installation reflecting upon reinterpreted memories within transitional spaces.

Brazilian Surrealism: The Art Of Walter Lewy, Glauco Adorno Jan 2016

Brazilian Surrealism: The Art Of Walter Lewy, Glauco Adorno

LSU Master's Theses

Walter Max Lewy (1905 – 1995) was a Surrealist painter and graphic designer who worked in Brazil for most of his career. Born in Germany to a Jewish family, the artist was forced to flee Europe in the eve of the Second World War, finding a safe haven in the city of São Paulo. The city’s budding modern art scene provided solid ground for Lewy’s art to flourish. His achievements epitomize the global occurrence of Modernism, in its manifestations outside the traditional Western artistic centers of the world. This thesis is the first comprehensive analysis of Walter Lewy’s life and …

Intimate Immensities, Jonathan Walker Wright Jan 2016

Intimate Immensities, Jonathan Walker Wright

LSU Master's Theses

The works in the “Intimate Immensities” series of landscape paintings function as “aporia,” or irresolvable contradictions. Using two aspects of Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic designations of the sign: the “icon” and “index,” these paintings function as both iconographic representations of mankind’s spiritual connection with nature and indexical relics of the creative process as ritual. The foundational view out of which the work emerges is grounded in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism. This thesis correlates Vajrayana Buddhism, ritual and the creative process, by explaining the parallels between ritual and the cognition that occurs during the creative process. To do …

Boys On Blue Benches: Disfigured Veterans Of The First World War, Brenna K. Pritchard Jan 2016

Boys On Blue Benches: Disfigured Veterans Of The First World War, Brenna K. Pritchard

LSU Master's Theses

The First World War saw a multitude of facial wounds, with veterans coming home with severe facial mutilation numbering in the thousands. These veterans have been somewhat overlooked in the historiography of medicine in World War I, and this work seeks to remedy that by examining every aspect of their lives, from the moment of the wound, to the aftermath of their return home. The medical professionals who treated these men gave a great deal of thought to the philosophy behind their work, and frequently voiced the opinion that their work was essential for the wellness of these men’s psyches. …

La Place De L'Honneur Dans L'Evolution De La Guerre Au Moyen Age, Nicolas Cyril Franchitti Jan 2016

La Place De L'Honneur Dans L'Evolution De La Guerre Au Moyen Age, Nicolas Cyril Franchitti

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of this study is to understand the role that honor represents for warriors through certain conflicts from the XIIIth to XVth century. The Christian ethic was in opposition to the Feudal ethic, and the opposition between the two provoked several changes in the way honor was perceived in warfare throughout the centuries. The notion of honor depends on the thoughts and the context into which individuals or groups belong. It implies reciprocity; measured by norms often recognized by an other entity. The chivalrous ideology was born out of the social rise of the milites and through the simultaneous …

The Sketches For Mendelssohn's Paulus, Op. 36, Karl Joseph Simmerman Jan 2016

The Sketches For Mendelssohn's Paulus, Op. 36, Karl Joseph Simmerman

LSU Master's Theses

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Paulus, Op. 36 (1836) is one of the most important nineteenth-century contributions to the oratorio genre. Current scholarly understanding of the oratorio’s creation rests on three dissertations: Stuart Douglass Seaton identified, transcribed, and discussed some of the sketches for Paulus; Siegwart Reichwald examined the extant autographs for Paulus; and Jeffrey S. Sposato thoroughly documented the collaborative compilation of the libretto. None of these studies, however, provides a thorough examination of all the sketches for Paulus.

This study constitutes the first complete transcription of the sketches for Paulus, basing its methodology on the transcription practices …

Gotta Catch 'Em All, Jennifer Lynn Lombardi Jan 2016

Gotta Catch 'Em All, Jennifer Lynn Lombardi

LSU Master's Theses

The ability to imagine is essential to shaping who we are, and is an important part of our humanity. Children have the ability to use aspects of their environment as their playthings, becoming the characters in their world through their sense of imagination. We lose this ability as we grow, leaving us with only memories and sentimentality. I have come to realize that my art is an expression of the longing and search to regain that ability to become fused with my imagination and my environment. I allow myself to become lost in a world of fantasy once more, and …

Consecutive Connectors: A Study On Discourse Markers In Honduran Speech, Leeann Michelle Stover Jan 2016

Consecutive Connectors: A Study On Discourse Markers In Honduran Speech, Leeann Michelle Stover

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis addresses the question of discourse marker usage and function among a group of Honduran Spanish speakers who reside in Louisiana in an environment of English language contact. It seeks to descriptively outline the pragmatic functions of the consecutive connector markers entonces, así and pues, and to identify the meanings underlying these functions in informal conversation. As the first linguistic study of Hondurans in Baton Rouge, this thesis gives new insight to Spanish discourse marker usage in the United States. 19 Honduran speakers residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana were interviewed, and their spontaneous speech was transcribed and analyzed for …

Jockeying For Position: Horse Racing In New Orleans, 1865-1920, Matthew Saul Perreault Jan 2016

Jockeying For Position: Horse Racing In New Orleans, 1865-1920, Matthew Saul Perreault

LSU Master's Theses

From 1865 to 1920, Thoroughbred horse racing matured in Louisiana, developing into a national sport shaped by the processes of modernization, professionalization, and reform. Before the onset of the Civil War, the leaders of Southern thoroughbred horse racing came from the planter elite who used African-American slave horsemen in shows of “amateur” recreation. Combining upper-class recreation with lower and middle-class entertainment, horse racing was a performance of social power. The Civil War devastated the Louisiana turf, scattering horses and men – but sportsmen proposed that post-war racing would help the state recover. The once-independent New Orleans turf joined an interconnected …

Is Book The Same As Libro? A Comparative Study Of Lexical Access In Heritage Speakers And L2 Learners, María Gabriela Puscama Jan 2016

Is Book The Same As Libro? A Comparative Study Of Lexical Access In Heritage Speakers And L2 Learners, María Gabriela Puscama

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT The Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM) posits an organization of the bilingual lexicon based on conceptual and lexical links between first (L1) and second (L2) language words (Kroll & Stewart, 1994). This model predicts that increasing L2 proficiency would lead to the strengthening of conceptual links between L1 and L2 words (Cheng & Leung, 1989; Dong et al., 2005, Francis et al., 2014). The question arises, however, whether proficiency is the only predictor of conceptual link strength. Some studies suggest that L2 word processing may be different in heritage speakers and adult L2 learners who have similar L2 proficiency, but …

All Are Immigrants, Seyedehghazal Gazelle Naghshbandi

LSU Master's Theses

“I constantly migrate and among many places and always to and fro I do it alone, although many people act like me”— Agnes Heller Three years ago, I left my home country of Iran for many reasons. I wanted something new in my life: new challenges and new experiences. This move expanded my world. As my world expanded, I lost my comfort and security. I …

La Cámara Insurrecta. La Fotografía Como Desobediencia Al Sistema Heteronormativo, Mariana Yanina Olivares Jan 2016

La Cámara Insurrecta. La Fotografía Como Desobediencia Al Sistema Heteronormativo, Mariana Yanina Olivares

LSU Master's Theses

The heteronormative society establishes a systematic foundation of oppression based on its construction of the sex/gender system. Teresa de Lauretis expresses the heteronormative system as the culprit for the dualistic division; which is reproduced and regulated as natural through technologies of gender. Gender can be deduced as a product of the heterocentric society’s performativity ideal as well as medical, juridical, cinema, cybernetic, and photographic technologies amongst others (Paul Preciado, “Biopolítica del género”). Said devices collaborate in the naturalization of the heterocentric discourse on the basis of the construction and diffusion of gender models. By virtue of this thesis, photography is …

Facts Are Stubborn Things: The Foundation Of Alfred Russel Wallace's Theories, 1823-1848, Sabrina Rae Cervantez Jan 2016

Facts Are Stubborn Things: The Foundation Of Alfred Russel Wallace's Theories, 1823-1848, Sabrina Rae Cervantez

LSU Master's Theses

Alfred Russel Wallace, a Victorian naturalist, firmly believed that based on his own extensive research there were theories that could effectively provide a means of studying the natural world and improving society. Although he became a respected naturalist his interests in mesmerism, socialism, and spiritualism disconnected him from the mainstream scientific community. Following the tradition of early nineteenth-century naturalists, Wallace was self-trained and self-educated, traits that allowed him to study multiple fields of interests and conduct personal experimentations. In these formative years, he was influenced by British popular culture, interactions with the working class and the latest trends of intellectual …

Dispositions In Evolutionary Biology: A Metaphysically Realist Account, Daniel Glyn Swaim Jan 2016

Dispositions In Evolutionary Biology: A Metaphysically Realist Account, Daniel Glyn Swaim

LSU Master's Theses

In the last several decades, philosophers of biology have published countless books and articles on the causal mechanisms underlying evolutionary change. There has been scant effort devoted, however, to detailed analysis of what these mechanisms mean for the relationship between our best interpretations of evolutionary change and our metaphysical picture of the world. This thesis addresses some key aspects of that metaphysical picture. I argue for a metaphysically realist interpretation of dispositions as causally active in evolutionary biology. I address fitness and evolvability in particular, as they present two of the best possible case studies for a metaphysically realist interpretation …

Zhenfang Zhao’S Widow Xianglin [Xianglin Sao] And New Directions In Modern Huai Opera, Yuxi Zhao Jan 2016

Zhenfang Zhao’S Widow Xianglin [Xianglin Sao] And New Directions In Modern Huai Opera, Yuxi Zhao

LSU Master's Theses

Huai Opera, a category of Chinese opera performed in Shanghai as well as the Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces, has been a popular type of entertainment ever since its creation sometime in the nineteenth century. With the beginning of the twenty-first, the art form has begun to lose audiences, in part due to the changed economic circumstances, which no longer made it feasible to attend three- to four-hour performances, in part due to problems inherent in the genre, such as old-fashioned plots, the common, unrefined style of the libretto, and the inflexible use of role types, modes, and metrical types. Zhenfang …

A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll Jan 2016

A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice. Results suggested that all parts of the original model need not be present, nor must they occur in the originally stated order for rehearsal frames to take place and direct students toward positive musical change. An amended model of the rehearsal frame …

Momentary Eddies, Leah Marie Hamel Jan 2016

Momentary Eddies, Leah Marie Hamel

LSU Master's Theses

Our lives are in a constant state of change, from the most intimate scale physically and emotionally to the world surrounding us externally. The relationships we build with ourselves, others, and the world surrounding us are important structures we carry with us throughout life. Momentary Eddies is a visual poem about the interconnectedness of our inner and outer landscapes. I have created a hauntingly dreamlike space that explores a landscape of emotions that are an entangled part of personal intimate relationships and how the emotional and physical topographies of these relationships connect to the environment surrounding us. These paper sculptures …

LSU Master's Theses

My goal is to catch the moment in my paintings, whether it is an event from my busy everyday life or a slow formal arrangement of objects, that studies composition, light, color and movement. The drastic change in my life, traveling from Bangladesh to the United States, inspired me to render important small, quiet, little moments of my daily life by painting them. The intimacy of this connection is very important to me.

Character Studies Of Time: A Two Movement Work For Orchestra, Crystal Darcell Birdsong Jan 2016

Character Studies Of Time: A Two Movement Work For Orchestra, Crystal Darcell Birdsong

LSU Master's Theses

The idea behind The Character Studies of Time: A Two Movement Work for Orchestra should be reminiscent of, and is inspired by the character pieces of Robert Schumann’s Carnival. Although the works of Robert Schumann are originally short piano solos, the spirit of the character piece and all that it entails could be found throughout The Character Studies of Time. This symphony does not follow a strict form of 19th century writing, although the elements of romanticism can be found throughout the piece. The “characters” as they relate to time are quite literally “night” and “day.” The individual titles are …

The Merging Of Ornamentation, Artistic Competence, And Social Structure In The Portraiture Oi Jeremiah Theus In Charleston, South Carolina, Tania Inniss Jan 2016

The Merging Of Ornamentation, Artistic Competence, And Social Structure In The Portraiture Oi Jeremiah Theus In Charleston, South Carolina, Tania Inniss

LSU Master's Theses

Previous research into the art of Jeremiah Theus has often left much to be desired. A common choice of historians is to discuss how he differs from artists of his time, or discuss him solely in the context of other artists. However, it is important to study Theus within his own framework. A study of his particular location, time period, family history, the subjects he elected to portray and the way he chose to portray them all help in understanding and recognizing what makes Theus unique as an artist. This thesis aims not only to address the research undertaken by …

Nightmares Are Dreams, Too, Camilla Meg Morrison Jan 2016

Nightmares Are Dreams, Too, Camilla Meg Morrison

LSU Master's Theses

This work explores themes of womanhood through the creation of an installation that is a blend of visual art and costume design. Often the initial creative impulse of a costume design can be compromised by the needs or necessity of a production. Using this instinct as a guide to the exploration of themes of womanhood, this journey will yield the design and production of highly theatrical and emotional pieces of art. The purpose of this work is to tell stories and share experiences of being a woman. The pieces will be displayed as an environmental installation that will invite the …

El Tú No Es De Nosotros, Es De Otros Países: Usos Del Voseo Y Actitudes Hacia Él En El Castellano Hondureño, Monika Estrada Andino Jan 2016

El Tú No Es De Nosotros, Es De Otros Países: Usos Del Voseo Y Actitudes Hacia Él En El Castellano Hondureño, Monika Estrada Andino

LSU Master's Theses

Studies of Central American varieties of Spanish, including the Spanish spoken in Honduras, are scarce and the present study represents one of the few attempts to investigate the sociolinguistics of Honduran Spanish in the United States. Pronominal uses of voseo, tuteo and ustedeo are analyzed and compared between two speech communities located in the Central District of Honduras and the Baton Rouge Metro Area in Louisiana. Besides, the study explores linguistic attitudes towards pronominal forms of address in both communities. Language Variation Suite, a novel software application for sociolinguistic data analysis, was used as the primary tool to explore the …

On The Use And Development Of The Pentatonic Scale Through The Works Of Antonín Dvořák, Andrew W. Brinkman Jan 2016

On The Use And Development Of The Pentatonic Scale Through The Works Of Antonín Dvořák, Andrew W. Brinkman

LSU Master's Theses

Concepts related to style change have been discussed thoroughly by theorists such as Leonard Meyer and others. In the case of Czech scholar, Antonín Dvořák, this change relates directly to his pentatonic style. While many musicologists suggest that the composer's travels to the United States in the early 1890's had a profound effect on the birth of his pentatonic style, this thesis posits that Dvořák's pentatonicism is apparent from even his earliest works. In examining evidence of this pentatonicism it becomes clear that, for Dvořák, there are two types: thematic and cadential. Thematic pentatonicism arises from themes of works or …

The Effect Of The Use Of The Students' First Language In Grammar Instruction: A Report On Student Preferences And Performance In The Target Language, Katherine Mickel Jan 2016

The Effect Of The Use Of The Students' First Language In Grammar Instruction: A Report On Student Preferences And Performance In The Target Language, Katherine Mickel

LSU Master's Theses

This study explores the effect of the use of the target language (TL) and the first language (L1) during grammar instruction in the foreign language classroom. There is limited evidence regarding the effect of language of instruction on TL acquisition (Tian & Macaro, 2012; Viakinnou-Brinson, Herron, Cole, & Haight, 2012; Antón & DiCamilla, 1999). However, this area warrants further research. As such, the present study investigates teacher language use (Spanish-only, English-only, or no restriction) during the explicit instruction of Spanish object pronouns (direct, indirect, and both combined) to measure the effect of each language condition on students’ object pronoun performance. …
