Reaping The Harvest, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Reaping The Harvest, P. Gerard Damsteegt
Faculty Publications
The reaping of the harvest through baptism is a highlight in the life of God's church. When the new Christian confirms his spiritual marriage to the Lord in baptism, we witness the outcome of a long, painstaking process wherein humans, as coworkers with God, have unselfishly worked to gain the victory over the devil. At the moment of reaping, we rejoice, exclaiming, "It was worth all the effort!"
Ministry, Management, And The Ecumenical Movement, Gary M. Simpson
Ministry, Management, And The Ecumenical Movement, Gary M. Simpson
Faculty Publications
The ecumenical movement in contemporary America should not be surprised to find itself in a quandary of questions regarding the "ministry” of the gospel. From the first decades following the ascension of Jesus until the present the whole complex of emerging questions of ministry have been intimately bound up with society-wide crises of authority. While it is nearly impossible to sort out the myriad questions regarding ministry that have arisen in the American context, one factor in particular has and, if left unchecked, will continue to subvert the ministry of the gospel: a society-wide managerial mode of authority. It has …
A Public Ministry By All The Baptized?, Patrick R. Keifert
A Public Ministry By All The Baptized?, Patrick R. Keifert
Faculty Publications
Any discussion of the ministry of the baptized eventually reaches a point where someone asks, “If all the baptized are ministers, then why and how do we distinguish between the ministry of clergy and laity?” One promising answer begins, “The clergy have a public ministry....” The unspoken half of that answer, seldom said, but powerfully lived out in contemporary capitalistic cultures is, “The laity’s ministry is private.” This response constricts the scope of the gospel and plays into the contemporary gulf between the public and private dimensions of our lives.

Gamma And Dynamic Range Needs For An Hdtv Electronic Cinematography System, Harry Mathias
Gamma And Dynamic Range Needs For An Hdtv Electronic Cinematography System, Harry Mathias
Faculty Publications
A cinematographer's perspective regarding gamma and contrast manipulation in video and film is given. In film, a selective exposure can be used; the negative characteristic is the cinematographer's creative tool. The use of film as a video medium is considered, both negative and positive transfer. Contrast reproduction in the video medium is explained, and film and video gammas are compared. Also compared with the film gamma is the gamma obtained with an HDTV camera. Future trends are sketched, and current HDTV specifications are compared with the characteristics of film. Predictability and consistency of results, that is, the final image on …

Giovanni Maria Artusi's L'Artusi Overo Delle Imperfettioni Della Moderna Musica (1600): A Translation And Commentary, Malcolm Litchfield

Giovanni Maria Artusi is well known for his conservative role in the debate between advocates of the prima and seconda pratiche. Contemporary authors marvel at Artusi's audacity in criticizing the genius of Monteverdi. Though often viewed as a pedant, Artusi was a significant Italian theorist who understood ancient Greek theory and had innovative ideas for applying this ancient knowledge to modern practice.
L' Artusi, overo Delle imperfettioni deIla moderna musica was written to illuminate and correct errors Artusi found in contemporary scholarship (chiefly in Bottrigari's work) and composition (specifically, certain liberties in Monteverdi's madrigals). Artusi effectively argues for a universal …

Trauma And Sadomasochistic Narrative, Barbara A. Schapiro
Faculty Publications
This essay applies trauma theory and relational psychoanalysis to a close reading of Mary Gaitskill's short story "The Dentist." It argues that the sadomasochistic relationship central to this story, and to much of Gaitskill's fiction, is rooted in trauma and can be illuminated by an understanding of the post-traumatic condition.

The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens
The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens
Faculty Publications
This paper is a summary of the life and major achievements of Adelbert Ames, Jr., an American ophthalmologist and perceptual psychologist, who had initially wanted to be a visual artist. He is most widely remembered today as the inventor of the Ames Demonstrations in Perception, the most famous of which consists of a distorted room in which people seem to shrink as they walk from one corner to another. This essay discusses the relationship of the Ames Demonstrations to anamorphic visual art, and it documents various comments by perceptual psychologists and artists who were directly acquainted with Ames.

Small claims court is not a building or a courtroom, but a special procedure, established by each state, which simplifies the court process for a specified range of civil disputes involving relatively small amounts of money (Ruhnka 1878: 1). The intent of the small claims process is to provide the parties involved (litigants) with an opportunity for a low cost, speedy means of settling a dispute. Litigants (plaintiff and defendant) in small claims court may represent themselves in a semi-formal setting where the normal legal rules for the presentation of evidence have been simplified.

The Circleville Massacre: A Brutal Incident In Utah's Black Hawk War, Albert Winkler

The Ute Indians of Utah rebelled against the white settlers of Utah, and war broke out in 1865. The Ute Indians showed skill at war, and they staged an attack on Circleville that killed four people. The white settlers became suspicious of the nearby Piute Indians and arrested them. The Indians attempted to escape and were shot down. The white settlers feared that the nearby Indians would retaliate, so they killed the women and children. Three or four small children were spared to be raised by white families.

Argues (largely in the style of Matthew Arnold) that the Victorian verse parodist C.S. Calverley can best be understood through 19th century ideas of verse translation, and especially through the writing on parody of the Scottish lawyer Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee, in his Essay on the Principles of Translation (1792).
