Are They Listening?: Revisiting Male Privilege And Defensive Learning In A Feminist Classroom, Cameron A. Tyrrell

Privileged students, particularly male-identified students, in women’s studies classrooms have been a population of study previously. Many feminist educators have encountered resistance from a male-identified student in their classroom. Scholarship has been done that analyzes the discourses around how male privilege is invoked by men in women’s studies classrooms. This study defined defensive learning with specific acts of disengagement that hinder privileged students, particularly male-identified students in Gender and Women’s Studies, from taking classes that are considered “feminist,” and from learning about systems of privilege. Analysis of the textual evidence in Martín Gaite's short stories and novels demonstrates that self-actualization is one of life's most important achievements. For this reason, perhaps, she has been acknowledged primarily as a feminist writer, but analysis indicates that it is her search for an interlocutor that is the primary underlying message that underscores all of her fictional works. She creates narratives that require interaction with narrative interlocutors which are designed in the narrative processes of her texts. The purpose of this study is to illuminate the patterns of identity and self explored through the lenses of intertextuality, feminist postmodern identity, and confession. A performance methodology is used wherein the performance brings to the fore explicitly visible gender norms standardized by everyday life through the enaction of the theoretical background. The performance. Boxes, is a piece that entangles multiple identities, which attempt to dislocate norms and ideals the audience has already established.
