Human Capital Formation And Return Migration Within Mong Communities In Rural/Semi-Rural Northern California, Chong Yang

Out-migration of rurality’s best and brightest contributes towards a brain drain and the hallowing out of rurality’s human capital. Findings of this research is conveyed using two research articles examining two different points on the continuum of rural vitality. A Critical Approach To Homiletic Literature, Winthrop H. Richardson
A Critical Approach To Homiletic Literature, Winthrop H. Richardson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
A critical study of the literary values contained in homiletic writing demands at the outset a careful consideration of what differentiates literature from mere language. Following a line of distinction made by Professor Albert Guerard of Stanford, literature may be defined from two points of view: technique and intention.
A more exalted concept is furnished by the philosophy of James Russell Lowell, as it has been paraphrased by Norman Foerster: “Literature is the ideal representation of human nature…”
Recognizing the fact that literature involves “overtones of the soul” (Guerard), or “spiritual imagination” (Foerster), we are forced to depart from the …

A Study Of Nutrition As A Mass Educational Movement During World War Ii : With Particular Reference To The Work Done In San Joaquin County, Maxine V. Garrigan
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During the decade, 1930-1940, most of the government efforts were directed to the task of seeing that no one should starve. Through welfare programs it was possible to insure low income groups against starvation; "but through the depression years and the poet-depression months, it was recognized that just the guarantee against starvation was not enough. Our nutritional goal should be commensurate with natural resources of our country and with our ability to produce, have the land, the equipment and the man power necessary to furnish good food for our whole nation. Knowing this and recognizing from surveys that a large …
Small Instrumental Ensembles In The Elementary School, John "Jack" William Murphy
Small Instrumental Ensembles In The Elementary School, John "Jack" William Murphy
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The music teacher of today has only to look back as far as his own experiences as a music student to become aware that rapid and significant changes in the underlying philosophy of music teaching have occurred at all school levels. In general the emphasis has shifted from the development of mechanical skills through repetitive drill on formalized exercises, to the development of the whole child through participation in a broad field of pleasurable musical experiences. Carried further, the newer concept implies that these musical experiences will not be limited to the confines of the music department, but will carry …

Some Significant Home And Community Factors Which Influence Juvenile Delinquency : With Particular Reference To Delinquency Problems Of The City Of Sacramento And The Sacramento City Schools, Harlow Alfred Hanlon
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
For many years, an adult Historical Background society has been involved in treating Juvenile delinquency problems. This fact is reflected in the Poor Laws of Elizabethan England, in the Indenture and Settlement Laws which date back to 1601, and the hit-or-miss idealism of private charities.
In the United States, we find it in the transplanting of the Indenture and Settlement Laws and the Almshouse In the Early English Colonies on the main land of North America. Toward the close of the seventeenth century, the first almshouse was established in Boston and others follower until by the beginning of the nineteenth …
A Mechano-Physical Working Model Of The Peripheral Speech Mechanism, Latta Alan Ross
A Mechano-Physical Working Model Of The Peripheral Speech Mechanism, Latta Alan Ross
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Students and instructors in the Speech Arts have voiced the complaint that a full understanding of the structures and performances of the speech mechanism is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible of conveyance, by the employment solely of abstract descriptions. That a complete understanding of the peripheral speech mechanism should be a part of the education of every student in the Speech Arts on scarcely be doubted. Hence recourse to a medium which will supplement the …

The Christian Thought Of Doctor Toyohiko Kagawa And His Social Works And Movements, Eiichi Iimura
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The world recognizes Toyohiko Kagawa as the St. Francis of Japan. His heart is one of pure love like that of St. Francis, but his battle has not been carried on by means of the sermon in a religious denomination. With a heart of love Kagawa has stood in the streets and would save the lives of the people. This is because he was born in 20th century Japan and not in Italy of the Middle Ages.
Fifteen hundred years after the fall of ancient Rome the world once more is about to undergo a mighty change. At this time …
The Development Of Mexican Music, Edith M. K. Tibbets
The Development Of Mexican Music, Edith M. K. Tibbets
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps no country at the present time has a richer unexplored fount of folk music than has Mexico. In fact. her rich store of musical culture, like a vast mine scarcely worked entitles her to a position among those peoples whose folk music has long been firmly established.
Finding the source material on the music of Mexico for the most part, fragmentary and scattered, the writer decided to do serious research in translating from the early Spanish writers, and in reading the chronicles of the travelers of that early period, as well as the historical writings and the legendary lore …
