The Society's Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, June 12, at the Memorial Union on the University of Maine (Orono) campus. The morning session was devoted to the business meeting, the minutes of which are summarized elsewhere in this Newsletter, followed by an Open House at the Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History. In the afternoon, there were three short presentations on the general topic, "Folklore Field Work in the Maritime Provinces." Feminists can fight sexism in religion without having to drop out of the church, said a UMO religious scholar Wednesday night. Professor Ralph Hjelm, chairman of the philosophy department, spoke on sexism in western religions before about 45 people in the English/Math building.

Kathy is a petite 22-year-old senior this year, a popular woman who is doing well academically and has enjoyed most of her life at UMO. She lived in the dormitories for two years before moving off campus. But Kathy hasn't had the typical college career. In April of 1981, her sophomore year, she had an experience most women don't even joke about. She was raped in her dorm room.

In just six short years, the University of Maine at Orono hockey program has experienced just about every up and down there is. Two years ago, the team qualified for the ECAC Division I playoffs after only two years in the league. Previous to that, Maine had qualified for the Division II East tournament in 1979 after only two years as a varsity. On the other side of the coin, after losing 15 players to graduation last year, the Black Bears slipped to an 8-21 record and a last place finish in the ECAC.

This article discusses a controversy regarding the Catholic Diocese of Maine’s decision to create a second church, Sacred Heart, in Waterville. The existing church, St. Francis de Sales was considered a French church, which Sacred Heart was staffed by Irish clergy. The author uses this event to discuss the poor relationship between Irish and French Roman Catholics.

Fifteen Female Students Surveyed Reported Sexual Harassment, Saundra Gardner

During the 1981 Spring semester, Saundra Gardner, an assistant professor of Sociology at the University of Maine, conducted a survey of female UMaine students about experiencing sexual harassment at the hands of university faculty members. Five percent of respondents reported being sexually harassed.
