La Quête De L'Identité Dans Deux Romans Acadiens: Le Chemin Saint-Jacques Et Moncton Mantra [The Quest For Identity In Two Acadian Novels: Le Chemin Saint-Jacques And Moncton Mantra], Lisa Pelletier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In most people's minds the word "Acadian" is synonomous with "Deportation." Between 1755 ans 1763, the British government deported seventy-five percent of the French Neutrals of Acadia, an estimated 11,000 men, women, and children. Immediately after the Treaty of Paris of 1763 and from all parts of the world, Acadians started the return journey. Those who reestablished themselves in Nova Scotia (Acadia no longer existed as a geographic location since 1713) and southern New Brunswick were once again removed from their new lands as Loyalists flowed in by the thousands after their defeat in the American Revolution. The French Acadians …

Creative Book Arts Preserving Family History, Sarah Owen Tabor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the project I have developed a series of four artist's books from material I have collected pertaining to my family history. Over the last four years I have collected written narratives, photographs, tape-recorded interviews, genealogies, letters, electronic communications, and other documents. The first book in the series is an accordion-style book contrasting a trip my Great Grandmother took to Yellowstone National Park by covered wagon from Oklahoma Territory in 1903 with my trip from Maine to the same park in 1978. Though technology had changed the mode of transportation, and the intervening years had seen changes in many other …

Why Mystery And Detective Fiction Was A Natural Outgrowth Of The Victorian Period, Sharon J. Kobritz

This Master Project presents evidence showing why mystery and detective fiction flourished during the Victorian period and argues that this enduring genre was a natural outgrowth of this time. The project presents material on the culture of the Victorian period and shows how the roles of men and women are defined. This project will argue that mystery and detective fiction flourished because of the changes in popular culture; that the sweeping changes in education, medicine, literature, religion and business solidified the popularity of this genre. Along with this genre of fiction came a new way of publishing and reading. One …

Why Is America So Blue? A Performance Analysis Of The Blue Man Group That Demonstrates The Deeper Cultural Significance Within The Structure Of Its Performance, Sean A. Fidler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The performance artists known as the Blue Man Group have taken America by storm in their performances through the clever use of household products ranging from Twinkies to toilet paper and not through the traditional presentation of a play script. The Blue Man Group started in the late 1980's as three mute, bald-capped street performers clad entirely in black except for their heads, necks and hands that were covered with cobalt blue paint. Keeping the blue body paint but moving off the street, the group has grown and they have now established themselves in legitimate theatres in four major cities …

From August 1607 to summer or fall 1608, the Popham Colony was established on what is now known as Hossketch Point, in Popham Beach, Maine. Rediscovered in 1994, the archaeological remains of the colony are providing insights into one of England's earliest colonial efforts in North America. Among the most exciting hds, are features relating to early seventeenth-century English building practices. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of the colony's six meter wide by twenty meter long storehouse, the "Admiral's howse," one of two apparently connected buildings, the buttery general or the Corporal's house; and what has tentatively been identified as the …

Zimbabwean Land And Zimbabwean People: Creative Explorations., Joshua Caine Anchors Jan 2002

Zimbabwean Land And Zimbabwean People: Creative Explorations., Joshua Caine Anchors

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The four writings compiled for this project involve explorations into the complex relationship between Zimbabweans and their land. The current struggles in Zimbabwe over land seizure and resettlement make this a particularly timely and noteworthy theme. The first piece, "Tshaya, Indoda," is a screenplay looking at the dynamic relationship between a white safari operator and black subsistence farmers who live in nearby communal farming lands. The disputes and issues discussed in this piece are very realistic and awareness is raised as to the historical nature and racial dimensions of the current land disputes in Zimbabwe. "Dubious," the second piece, is …

The Wise Women Of Chelm, Beth Amy Lurie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My Creative Writing Thesis is a collection of short stories. This original collection, THE WISE WOMEN OF CHELM, reflects an older, oral and written tradition of folk tales known as THE WISE MEN OF CHELM. I grew up with these older tales and have been inspired by their humor all my life. Many authors have added to the Chelm tradition, spanning centuries and including contemporary times. My tales occur in the late l W s , and my twist on them is the focus on women. I like to describe them as mock-feminist since they involve women who, in their …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at The University of Maine, I submit a collection of poems 1 have entitled Old Maps. Many of the poems in this thesis employ natural imagery, and while it is my intent to discover and analyze the natural world, I also hope to uncover and disclose a more thorough understanding of myself through verse. Picturing Nature: Education, Ornithology And Photography In The Life Of Cordelia Stanwood: 1865-1958, Cynthia Watkins Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of environmental history, with a few exceptions, has neglected gendered analysis; in addition, several women's histories have analyzed a few environmental issues, but disregard environmental scholarship. In the joining of women's and environmental history, this dissertation examines the life of one woman, Cordelia J. Stanwood of Ellsworth, Maine (1865-1958), to determine how a woman could use nature to transcend the social limits of domesticity in the early twentieth century. Research of her correspondence, published writing, photography and forty years of field notes reveals that like many other women, she took advantage of technology and evolving ideas about womanhood …
