"The Worker As Co-Creator With God": The Theology Of Dorothy Day's Unionism, Joe Kruse May 2021

"The Worker As Co-Creator With God": The Theology Of Dorothy Day's Unionism, Joe Kruse

Masters of Arts in Theology Theses

When contemporary admirers of Dorothy Day reflect on her work and that of the Catholic Worker, what usually comes to mind are the Movement's charitable works for the poor and its pacifism. However, during the early years of the Movement many Catholic Workers, including Day, were heavily involved in the labor movement and in advocating for workers' rights. Day, a fierce anti-capitalist, saw the struggle for the liberation of workers as central to the Catholic Worker's mission and rooted her labor activism in a Catholic theology of unionism. In this paper I explore Dorothy Day’s unionism and how Day understood …

The Undercurrent Of Music In The Burgeoning Spirituality Of Etty Hillesum From 1941 To 1943, Nancy Jp Anderson

Masters of Arts in Theology Theses

How is music described in the burgeoning spirituality of Etty Hillesum in her journals and correspondence from 1941 through 1943? I discuss the influence of music in her life, the number of references to musical terminology in the literature, and the undercurrent of music in her spirituality. This area of Hillesum’s writings has not been critically studied as of this project date. Explored are: the role music played in Hillesum’s social sphere, music as metaphor for Hillesum’s spirituality in her journals and correspondence, and the connection between music and spirituality, in general, and more specifically as it appears in her …

Thus the Thecla narrative offers another second century perspective. As an example of extra-canonical writing in the early church we see how the cultural values of honor-shame provided part of the framework for early Christian views on gender and sexuality. In my …

20th Century American Conservative Evangelical Christianity And Its Understanding Of Faith, Timothy Grover May 2013

20th Century American Conservative Evangelical Christianity And Its Understanding Of Faith, Timothy Grover

Masters of Arts in Theology Theses

This thesis emerges from my experience with conservative evangelical Christianity. I come from a conservative evangelical Christian background, raised in a Baptist church that dropped the word Baptist from its name, preferring instead to be known as a non-denominational church. It was there that I observed that a church’s success is measured, in large part, by the number of new converts it brings to Christianity. I became disillusioned by the superficiality in the worship services. For example, I heard from a church employee that one music director was hired because, in addition to having a Master’s Degree in music, he …
