Rachmaninoff's Trio Elegiaque, Op 9: A Performer's Guide, Elisa Braga Galeano
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This document and the accompanying lecture/recital performance aim to call more attention to this intense and deeply emotional work. Focus will be placed on the technical challenges in the piano part while making recommendations for the performer when appropriate. As background, an overview of Rachmaninoff’s early life and work is presented in order to provide a clearer understanding of what led him to compose this trio. Of particular importance in the writing of this piece was the direct influence of Peter Tchaikovsky’s Trio, Op 50, which will also figure prominently in the background discussion.

After their release in 2001, Bratz dolls carved into Barbie’s previously monopolistic share of teen doll sales. Amidst their growing popularity, cultural critics expressed a host of concerns about Bratz dolls, especially over how they sexualize youth, but the line grew to include a host of products like costumes, makeup kits, games, books, clothing, and movies. It also inspired new, similar doll lines from other toy companies. In this article, we situate the Bratz’s popularity in a specific cultural moment tied to the history of modern feminism. We use a content analysis of the Bratz movie series to explore the …

We introduce here evoText, a new tool for automated analysis of the literature in the biological sciences. evoText contains a database of hundreds of thousands of journal articles and an array of analysis tools for generating quantitative data on the nature and history of life science, especially ecology and evolutionary biology. This article describes the features of evoText, presents a variety of examples of the kinds of analyses that evoText can run, and offers a brief tutorial describing how to use it.

This qualitative study examined how religion strengthened the marriages of three (n = 6) African American couples. An ancillary purpose of this study is to examine the extent that spirituality influences the marriages of these couples. Through the use of a family-strengths framework, this study examined how a religious orientation (Hill, 1968) stabilized Black marriages. Qualitative analysis revealed the following four themes: (1) Religion is The Foundation of the Marriage; (2) Couples Consistently Practiced their Religion; (3) Couples Turned to Religion during Difficult Times; and (4) Religion Transcended Race. The findings indicate these couples practiced their religion …

Rletters: A Web-Based Application For Text Analysis Of Journal Articles, Charles H. Pence
Faculty Publications
While textual analysis of the journal literature is a burgeoning field, there is still a profound lack of user-friendly software for accomplishing this task. RLetters is a free, open-source web application which provides researchers with an environment in which they can select sets of journal articles and analyze them with cutting-edge textual analysis tools. RLetters allows users without prior expertise in textual analysis to analyze word frequency, collocations, cooccurrences, term networks, and more. It is implemented in Ruby and scripts are provided to automate deployment.
Is Genetic Drift A Force?, Charles H. Pence
Is Genetic Drift A Force?, Charles H. Pence
Faculty Publications
One hotly debated philosophical question in the analysis of evolutionary theory concerns whether or not evolution and the various factors which constitute it (selection, drift, mutation, and so on) may profitably be considered as analogous to “forces” in the traditional, Newtonian sense. Several compelling arguments assert that the force picture is incoherent, due to the peculiar nature of genetic drift. I consider two of those arguments here—that drift lacks a predictable direction, and that drift is constitutive of evolutionary systems—and show that they both fail to demonstrate that a view of genetic drift as a force is untenable. I go …
Musicianship In Beginning Level String Pedagogy: A Content Analysis Of Class Method Books, Laurie Rominger
Musicianship In Beginning Level String Pedagogy: A Content Analysis Of Class Method Books, Laurie Rominger
LSU Major Papers
Students who begin music studies with a thorough foundation in musicianship will be better equipped to tackle the challenges of performing at a high level. When actively applying new techniques, however basic, to the goal of musical and artistic expression, the focus will shift from increasing physical technique and skill development to growing as a musician. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of musicianship in a setting that seldom receives attention in the musicianship literature: beginning string instrument instruction. This monograph examines string method books, a major deliverer of instruction within the early years of …
