Louis Xiv: Art As Persuasion Supporting The Dominance Of France In 17th Century Europe, Matthew Noblett
Student Scholarship
In 17th century France there was national funding combined with strict controls placed on the arts and all areas of the administration of Louis XIV. This was imperative to present the country as one of the greatest European powers of its time. It was done by creating personas of Louis as the Sun King, sole administrator of France or “'L'etat c' est moi” (I am the State) and conqueror. All were reinforced and often invented in rigid confines through state funded propaganda. His name has become synonymous with the French arts of the 17th century through significant investments in all …

Olympia, Reinventing The Nude, Holly Mcguire
Student Scholarship
Manet’s modernist depiction of the female nude as seen in Olympia sent shockwaves throughout the art world and forever changed the way we view nudes. Camille Lemonnier described the nude as such in 1870 “ The nude was modesty only if it is not a transitory state. It hides nothing because there is nothing to hide. The moment it hides something it becomes prurient, for in reality it shows it all the better. In order to stay virgin the nude in art must be impersonal and must not particularize; art has no need of a beauty spot upon the neck …

Gender And Dormitories At Lindenwood College 1968-1970, A. J. Medlock
Gender And Dormitories At Lindenwood College 1968-1970, A. J. Medlock
Student Scholarship
In the fall of 1969, as a result of the creation of a separate men’s college, Lindenwood College became faced with the problem of intervisitation, the issue of allowing men and women to visit each other in their dorm rooms. The problems of intervisitation at Lindenwood would illustrate the complexities many college administrations experienced with the doctrine of In loco parentis, a Latin term school administrations used to regulate the morals of students. America’s changing social mores forced universities to confront students who demanded control over matters concerning their personal lives, including sexual relations between men and women.

Renaissance Proportion Theory And Cosmology: Giovanni Paolo Gallucci’S Della Simmetria And Dürerian Neoplatonism, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
In 1591 Giovan Paolo Gallucci (1538-1621) published his Della simmetria def carpi humani (FIG. I), an Italian translation of the Four Books on Human Proportion, or Proportionslehre (1528), by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528).1 Though passed over in modem scholarship, and not as well-known as other publications from the last two decades of the Cinquecento, the encyclopedic treatment on human proportion theory in the new edition was widely read by artists and writers on art. A. Blunt demonstrated that Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665) made extensive use of Chapter LVII in the Libra quinto of Gallucci 's publication in his Osservazioni sopra la pittura …
