Fighting The Philistines: Robert Schuman And The Davidsbündler, Stephen J. White
Fighting The Philistines: Robert Schuman And The Davidsbündler, Stephen J. White
B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects
Robert Schumann was an eccentric composer and musical critic who influenced the Romantic-era musical community through the formation of the Davidsbündler. This “league of David” was Schumann’s idea of a musical society which exemplified a distinctly pure style of modern musical composition. The style of the Davidsbündler was based on the idea that music must reflect the personal life experiences of its composer. Needing a journal to publish musical writings of Davidsbündler, Schumann created the New Journal for Music. Having himself suffered from mental instability throughout his life, Schumann’s music often displayed unique levels of polarity and passion …

Sociolinguistics And Insider/Outsider Status In Hawai'i, Elissa M. Uithol
Sociolinguistics And Insider/Outsider Status In Hawai'i, Elissa M. Uithol
Linguistics Senior Research Projects
Prior to the rise of tourism in Hawai’i, the Hawaiian economy was largely driven by plantations. As labor was imported to work these plantations, a rich, multiethnic culture developed on the islands, producing a similarly diverse linguistic situation. What began as a pidgin blend of several languages for the purpose of communication between workers and supervisors has since developed into a language unique to the islands: Hawaiian Creole English (HCE). Social status in Hawai’i has long been influenced by a person’s manner of speech, as evidenced by elite Standard English (SE) schools founded to educate children of those in the …
Tomboys Are Girls, Too!: A Study Of Sibling Relationships In Caddie Woodlawn, Julia G. Kicinski
Tomboys Are Girls, Too!: A Study Of Sibling Relationships In Caddie Woodlawn, Julia G. Kicinski
English Seminar Capstone Research Papers
Readers can understand the sibling relationships present in Carol Ryrie Brink’s novel, Caddie Woodlawn, by studying the main character’s tomboy personality. Many scholars read this character through a feminist lens, treating her solely as a fictional character. However, this paper approaches the character from a nonfictional perspective to study how Caddie as a tomboy relates to her strong relationship with her brothers. This paper takes the definition of “tomboy” into account, as well as the psychology behind the development of both strong and weak sibling relationships, to determine whether Caddie’s tomboyism developed because of her strong relationship with her …
