Killing For Pleasure, Tzachi Zamir Aug 2004

Killing For Pleasure, Tzachi Zamir

Between the Species

This paper formulates and defends a version of moral vegetarianism. Since eating animals is not causally connected to their death, I begin with analyzing the moral status of consumer actions that do not, taken on their own, harm animals (I). I then formulate a version of moral vegetarianism (II). Three different opponents of moral vegetarianism are then distinguished and criticized (III-VI). I then take up the argument according to which eating animals benefits them (VII). I close with the question of the desirability of collective vegetarianism from the point of view of animals.

Rewriting, Rereading Récidive, Brian G. Kennelly Jul 2004

Rewriting, Rereading Récidive, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

Author of some dozen works of homoerotic fiction, two polemical essays, and recipient of the 1973 Prix Médicis1, Tony Duvert published his first novel Récidive in 1967. Seven years later he rewrote it, ultimately publishing a much shorter version in 1976 - which for reviewer A. Thiher resembles what the prose of Jean Genet might have become were it to have been rewritten by Alain Robbe-Grillet. This disturbing work by one of France's most aggressively homosexual writers, a self-proclaimed "pédhomophile" (L'Enfant 21), has largely escaped critical attention. In the only study to focus on Récidive to date, …

A Mediatic Pedagogy: Rhetoricizing Images Within Composition Curriculum, Brenda M. Helmbrecht Jul 2004

A Mediatic Pedagogy: Rhetoricizing Images Within Composition Curriculum, Brenda M. Helmbrecht

English

My dissertation explores how students’ interactions with visual media inform their subject positions as students, writers, and rhetoricians. I use a cross-disciplinary approach that intertwines Composition and Rhetoric scholarship with work from Media Studies to understand how visual media affect the way students write, read, and use language. Throughout my dissertation, I work with the theory of “remediation” to demonstrate how new media, such as the Internet, have been conceptualized, revised, and reformed as a result of their relationship to preexisting, or “old”, media like film and television. I predict that remediation can encourage students to position the texts they …

The Teenage Dissent Of Newman And Unamuno: Conscience As A Safeguard Against Coercive Manipulation, Kevin T. Fagan Jan 2004

The Teenage Dissent Of Newman And Unamuno: Conscience As A Safeguard Against Coercive Manipulation, Kevin T. Fagan

World Languages and Cultures

Teenagers seem easy targets for despotic groups, such as cults. Moral conscience, however, may be a dike against a sea of despotism. John Henry Newman and Miguel de Unamuno were giant defenders of conscience in their respective cultures. Their philosophies and phenomenologies of conscience depict conscience as supreme in the mind of the ordinary person, though subject to pressures, even death. This notion becomes alive in the deep religious crisis and conversion of their adolescence, marked by a sense of personal divine experience, confidence in final predestination or holy trust, and an ethical commitment. Both men, however, dissent from their …

A Middle School Strives To Achieve Team Leadership Through Opposition And Uncertainty, Kathleen J. Martin, Janet H. Chrispeels Jan 2004

A Middle School Strives To Achieve Team Leadership Through Opposition And Uncertainty, Kathleen J. Martin, Janet H. Chrispeels

Ethnic Studies

"Learning to Lead Together: The Promise and Challenge of Sharing Leadership" examines the dilemmas for school leaders and administrators, and the benefits for schools and students, when principals work with teachers (and their communities) to share leadership. Most schools function within existing hierarchical structures that contradict and undermine many of the conditions necessary for shared leadership. Current school reform initiatives and policies urge or require that teachers be actively involved in decision-making without addressing systemic dilemmas and paradoxes. Through real-life single and multiple case studies, "Learning to Lead Together" addresses how principals and their staffs struggle with the challenge of …
