Conservation In Idaho Oral History Project: Oral Historiography, Process And Practice, Carissa Mai Black

History Graduate Projects and Theses

The Conservation in Idaho Oral History Project: Oral Historiography, Process and Practice, is a combination of analytical and practical application and overview of the field of oral history. The analytical overview identifies the two major themes in oral history, academic and community, by analyzing the scholarship, including criticisms and progress of the field. It examines the different methodological approaches to oral history as well as the multidisciplinary use of the field. The Chinese In Bret Harte’S Overland: A Context For Truthful James, Tara Penry

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

For the first two years of its existence, the Overland displayed at least as much interest in Chinese culture as in any other single subject, if we can judge from the quantity of articles devoted to the topic. In the magazine's first twenty-four numbers, under the editorial guidance of Harte himself, fifteen substantial articles were published on the language, folkways, and industries of the Chinese or on political questions concerning their presence in California. By the time that Harte's "Plain Language" appeared in volume five, the magazine and its contributors seem to have exhausted what they had to say about …

Espe Alegria: Cultural Advisor And Voice Of The Basques In American Radio, Erin Passehl

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This presentation will showcase Basque immigrant Espe Alegria (1906-1991), who spent her life preserving and promoting Basque language, culture, and identity in Boise, Idaho. Espe Alegria’s continuous work left a legacy on the American Diaspora in three areas: her work in radio broadcasting, translation and immigration services, and the arts. Espe hosted The Basque Program, a one-hour radio program that aired every week from 1955-1981. Known as the “Voice of the Basques,” Espe used her social connections to personalize the program in ways that connected with listeners in both cities and Basque-speaking sheepherders. This presentation will also look at Espe’s …

Masculine Regeneration And The Attenuated Body In The Early Works Of Nandalal Bose, Niharika Dinkar Jun 2010

Masculine Regeneration And The Attenuated Body In The Early Works Of Nandalal Bose, Niharika Dinkar

Art, Design & Visual Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 2008, the works of the Bengali artist Nandalal Bose (1882-1966) enjoyed a rare North American museum tour, first at the San Diego Museum of Art and then at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In this first major international excursion, Bose‟s works were celebrated as an exemplar of the new modern visual language adopted by nationalist artists as they rejected Europeanized academic techniques in vogue around the turn of the twentieth century. Along with stalwarts like Abanindranath Tagore, Asit Haldar and Kshitindranath Majumdar, the ‘swadeshi’ (indigenous) artists marked an emphatic turn to revive an „Indian‟ aesthetic that has been seen …

Be Much: Teaching The Principles Of Design, Lois J. Chattin

Art Graduate Theses and Projects

What constitutes a piece of artwork? Is it the subject matter, the idea, the meaning, or the way in which it is made that realizes its success? Or is it the mere fact that human beings created it with purpose? If two pieces of artwork address the same subject, can one be considered better or more compelling than the other? Is there even such a thing as “good art” as opposed to “poor art”, or is that a debate that can only be answered within a culture or time period? Can one really judge the value of art, or is …

Because Shakespeare holds such a prominent position in English-speaking world culture, it is important to open and expand access to understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of Shakespeare to a constituency as wide-ranging as possible. To achieve this goal, Service-Learning students in ENGL 345 – Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Histories in Spring 2010 partnered with Lowell Elementary School for a fun and educational after-school program Over six weeks undergraduates in ENGL 345 taught a group of fourth through sixth graders about Shakespeare primarily through directing the elementary-school students in a shortened version of The Tempest

“O Brave New World”: Service-Learning And Shakespeare, Matthew Hansen

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Community-engaged learning is a rising feature of a wide variety of higher education institutions, from community colleges to private liberal arts colleges to large public universities. Everyone, it seems, is getting in on the act, and as a result, the amount of scholarship published on service-learning continues to multiply. There remains, however, curiously little scholarship published on the intersection of service-learning and literary studies. Almost no published scholarship exists on how courses on Shakespeare – a staple of nearly every college English department – might engage with the community through service-learning that provides a genuine community benefit while simultaneously deepening …
