The Forgotten Movement: Church Planting Trends And Lessons (Part 1 Of 2), S. Joseph Kidder, Dustin Serns

Faculty Publications

At the inception of the Advent movement, believers united to advance the cause of the gospel by entering new territory and starting new congregations. The Seventh-day Adventist Church experienced explosive growth, launching a movement that spread and continues to advance across the world. Today, 150 years later, the time has come to ask, How are we doing with raising up new congregations to finish the harvest in North America? To answer this question, we decided to look at statistics of the last century about church planting. We hope that the findings from this study will benefit the global church.

On The Unique Headship Of Christ In The Church: A Statement Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary, Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary

Books

We, the faculty of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, affirm that Christ is the only Head of the Church (Eph 1:22; 5:23; Col 1:18). Therefore, while there exists legitimate leadership in the Church, no other human being may rightfully claim a headship role in the Church. As Head of the Church, Christ provides the ultimate manifestation of God’s love (Eph 5:23, 25), demonstrating and vindicating God’s moral government of love (Rom 3:4, 25-26 5:8), and thus defeating the counterfeit government of the usurping “ruler of this world” (John 12:31; 16:11; cf. DA 758; 2T 2:211).

Focus On Children's Ministry, S. Joseph Kidder

Faculty Publications

In researching growing Seventh-day Adventist churches in North America we discovered that the common denominator among these churches is their focus on children’s ministries. In the past, parents brought their children to the church and the Lord. Today, children bring their parents and friends to the church if they enjoy their experience there.

The Derivation Of Identity: Gender, Masculinity, And Sexuality In Coriolanus, Matthew Chacko, L. Monique Pittman Ph.D. Jul 2014

The Derivation Of Identity: Gender, Masculinity, And Sexuality In Coriolanus, Matthew Chacko, L. Monique Pittman Ph.D.

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

William Shakespeare wrote Coriolanus (1608) when two epistemological modes, empiricism and theater, asserted competing constructions of selfhood. As Renaissance anatomical texts imply, empiricism voiced an increasingly stable and innate subjectivity. In contrast, theater imagined identity as fluid and subject to external manipulation by exposure to the stage. Coriolanus faces a dilemma of selfhood reflecting those conflicting epistemological modes. Outside agents attempt to change his subjectivity, mirroring the theater, while Coriolanus asserts his immutable identity, paralleling empirical understandings. Coriolanus’s concerns of selfhood echo Renaissance subjective anxieties during a changing period as different epistemologies, empiricism and theater, launched rival notions of identity. …

The Life And Status Of Women In Achaemenid Persia, Erika Mikkelson

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

“The Life and Status of Women in Achaemenid Persia” aims to understand and explain Persian culture in light of the story of Esther and to dispose of presuppositions that may have arisen from misunderstandings of Jewish culture. Understanding this information gives us a better picture of how women lived within the palace thereby facilitating an understanding of how Esther may have lived. To accomplish this, the Persepolis Fortification Tablets, resources that examine the archeological structure and composition of the Palace in Persepolis, and current studies on women in Persia have been explored. The Persepolis Fortification Tablets provide information on transactions …

Ecclesiastical Deadlock: James White Solves A Problem That Had No Answer, George R. Knight Jul 2014

Ecclesiastical Deadlock: James White Solves A Problem That Had No Answer, George R. Knight

Faculty Publications

Church organization was one of the hardest fought battles in Adventism’s early decades. Extending nearly 20 years, the struggle not only eventuated in aspects of church order not suggested in Scripture but provided a key hermeneutical principle for deciding other topics not made explicit in the Bible. In the process, James White, and many others, experienced a hermeneutical metamorphosis, a necessary transformation that allowed Seventh-day Adventism to develop into a worldwide force.

A Theology Of Ordination: An Integration Of Bible And Ellen G. White’S Writings, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

A theology of ordination should begin with investigating what is God’s testimony about ordination in the Scriptures. In this study, insights into the Old and New Testament history from the writings of Ellen G. White will be referred to whenever they shed light on the biblical passages and their relevance for today. In addition, the study has tried to investigate how ordination is connected to the truth as it is in Jesus, the Head of the church. Ordination and its authority will also be related to Jesus’ model of leadership in the church. The biblical examples of appointment, consecration, or …

Love And Judgment: God's Triumph -- Part 2, Jo Ann Davidson May 2014

Love And Judgment: God's Triumph -- Part 2, Jo Ann Davidson

Faculty Publications

The judgment message has two complementary aspects: God’s justice against sin on the one hand, and on the other, the extension of God’s blessing to all nations along with the vindication of His love, justice, and mercy. The Scriptures clearly emphasize God’s loathing of evil, linked with the certainty of divine punishment and mercy. The Bible also reminds us that sin produces deadly guilt, and it is this guilt that often causes our blindness to God’s goodness.
