The Willardian corpus provides sportspeople a framework for understanding spiritual formation. This article examines the “why,” “what,” and “how” of soul-training, how Christians in sports can engage in spiritual formation. Sportspeople train their souls to experience God’s presence and worship him on and off the competition stage (why). Free To Be Dog Haven: Dogs Who May Never Be Pets?, René J. Marquez

Animal Studies Journal

I am an artist who runs a sanctuary for dogs. I did not start the sanctuary as a studio project, but, as it turns out, it is very much an extension of my studio work. The sanctuary focuses on acknowledging canine subjectivity and agency in the context of colonialist, Western, modernist human fictions, a context explored throughout my work, in general. Our sanctuary is a site of ongoing investigation: we seek to map the territory between ‘free’ and ‘pet’. This paper examines the thinking behind and the practical life of my dog sanctuary: exigencies of doghuman collaboration and what it …

Everyman's Climb, Charles A. Coppin Jul 2019

Everyman's Climb, Charles A. Coppin

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Hal and Verity represent two different philosophies of learning, one used by most of us. In today’s world, authentic teaching is indeed a heroic act, but may not be the most popular. This piece draws distinctions between these choices, each time we teach a course, each day we walk into the classroom, and even when working with an individual student; they are ever present.

Beyond Limits: Exploring Motivation And The Lack Of Women In Ultramarathoning, Amy Harris Aug 2014

Beyond Limits: Exploring Motivation And The Lack Of Women In Ultramarathoning, Amy Harris

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

An ultramarathon extends beyond the traditional 26.2-mile marathon (Tharion, Strowman, & Rauch, 1988) and includes 50 kilometers (31 miles), 100 kilometers (62.1 miles) and 135 miles. Participants must train for substantial periods of time and oftentimes in rough off-road terrain while dealing with dramatic changes in elevation and weather. Despite these challenges, participation rates are increasing; yet, most of these participants are men. For instance, for every woman participant, five men participated in the Western States 100 (Soderland, 2011). Very few researchers have examined the motives to participate in this unique sport or investigated the gender barriers of ultramarathons. This …

The surveys asked interpreters to report on their own experiences using such technologies and asked examiners for their impressions of the technologies’ suitability as components of training and testing for certification. Technological advances in the means of audio and audiovisual communication are now being trialed in interpreted interactions, but most research reveals that increased use of technology accompanies rather than forms a part of the interlingual transfer. Responses from two groups …

Russian Language Journal

In 1976, the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) began sending American college students to Russia for advanced training in Russian language and literature. The original ACTR program was open to qualified students from any U. S. Pushkin Institute of the Russian Language in Moscow. Admission to the program was competitive, and, in practice, the ACTR program accepted for the most part graduate students and immediate-post BA …

John Chrysostom On The Christian Home As A Teacher, Arthur C. Repp Dec 1951

John Chrysostom On The Christian Home As A Teacher, Arthur C. Repp

Concordia Theological Monthly

John Chrysostom is known in the Christian Church primarily as the greatest pulpit orator of the fourth century. His excellency as a preacher, which also made him an outstanding example of the Antioch school of theology, has. in a measure, caused the Church to lose sight of his contributions to educational thought. Yet according to one authority John wrote the finest pedagogic treatise of the patristic era and developed "a method of sex instruction that is without superior in the history of education." In spite of this high tribute, however, the church father has been either generally ignored by American …
