An Approach To Wire Using Textile Techniques, Toni Vallette-Satterfield Dec 1980

An Approach To Wire Using Textile Techniques, Toni Vallette-Satterfield

Masters Theses

Wire can be used in the same way as fiber in many textile processes. Wire is used to gain the same richness of texture that is exhibited in fibers and to capture the light reflective quality of the textile techniques.

The following processes are not for beginning students. Much experimentation went into the research for each technique. The first method is coiling. This technique is a single-element stitch process (without the needle), worked continuously over a core. The second technique is crochet, involving a single-element structure in which loops are interlocked in a continuous manner. The third technique is loom …

Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett Dec 1980

Roethke’S "Meditations Of An Old Woman": A Myth And Ritual For Dying, Christopher K. Bennett

Masters Theses

In "Meditations of an Old Woman," Theodore Roethke poetically encountered death, speaking through the persona of an old woman approaching the end of life. The pattern she follows, wandering through her memory in search of the maiden she once was, is also found in the myth of Demeter and Persephone, which was ritualized in the Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece. The poem, myth, and ritual taken together reflect a single archetypal pattern for approaching death; comparing them will reveal the essence of each. Through recollection, the old woman finally unites with her lost youthful self in an epiphany similar to …

Principles Of Choreography As Exemplified In The Works Of George Balanchine, Virginia E. Bird

Masters Theses

This thesis presents an examination of George Balanchine's choreography. The examination is directed to three principles which are discussed in relation to his choreographic works.

The thesis is composed of six chapters and a summary including an introductory chapter. The second and third chapters discuss the historical background of George Balanchine as it relates to his choreographic development. The subject of the fourth chapter is Balanchine's musicality: how it was developed and how it is exemplified in his ballets. The fifth chapter is devoted to a discussion about Balanchine's neo-classical style. The last chapter examines Balanchine's ability to elucidate the …

Charles Langlade In The French And Indian War, Paul M. Trap Aug 1980

Charles Langlade In The French And Indian War, Paul M. Trap

Masters Theses

At the time when North America was "being torn by conflict for control of the continent, Charles-Michel Mouet de Xanglade became one of the most important Indian leaders in the Old Northwest. During the French and Indian War he led parties of Indian warriors in most of the major campaigns of the war, from the first fighting at Pickawillany to the French capitulation at Montreal in I760. Xanglade's Indians were typical of most Indian war-parties, both impairing the French cause by their atrocities and inappropriate actions and providing badly needed support in crucial situations.

This paper describes Xanglade's actions during …

Expressionism For Painting Sports, John T. Graves Jan 1980

Expressionism For Painting Sports, John T. Graves

Masters Theses

This thesis is an attempt to show that the Expressionistic style of painting lends itself to the Sports figure. The action and dynamic movement of the athlete can be easily portrayed by the slashing strokes and boldly suggested forms of Expressionism. By painting in this style the "feelings and emotions" of an event may be sensed. Sometimes the form is obviously exaggerated to emphasize this emotional quality or mood.

This paper discusses and illustrates the work of several sports artists who use Expressionism for their style of work. Leroy Neiman is probably the most famous of these, having worked for …

Surface Treatment Of Metals, Dorothy Dunkirk-Bennett Jan 1980

Surface Treatment Of Metals, Dorothy Dunkirk-Bennett

Masters Theses

The purpose or this thesis is to relate to others my experimentation of various types of metals, and the methods employed to decorate the surfaces of these particular metals. The differences, and similarities in means of working with and decorating each type of metal used is also discussed.

The first part of the paper is devoted to a brief history of metal techniques. This gives a better understanding as to when the particular techniques were first employed and how many of them were almost lost with the arrival of nineteeth century industralization.

Techniques which I used, and the various means …

An Investigation Of Educational Theatre And Professional Training Needs For Costume, Lighting, Sound, And Scenic Designers, Barry P. Johnson Jan 1980

An Investigation Of Educational Theatre And Professional Training Needs For Costume, Lighting, Sound, And Scenic Designers, Barry P. Johnson

Masters Theses

The educational theatre programs in the United States accept as one of their purposes the training of the professional theatre artist. Since the educational theatre began in the 1920's, university theatre departments have garnered criticism over their approach to professional training. No literature was found concerning research of the curriculum best suited to the training or educational development of the costume, lighting, sound, or scene design student.

In the attempt to determine what training or coursework is instrumental in the development of the theatre design student, a questionnaire was sent to two groups: the members of the New York League …

Photo Realism, Maureen A. Howe Jan 1980

Photo Realism, Maureen A. Howe

Masters Theses

Photo Realism is the principal term used throughout this paper. I use this specific terminology, Photo Realism, so as not to confuse it with Super Realism, Sharp Focus Realism or Hard Edge Realism. True, many of these Realisms all mean the impecable clarity of subject matter, but, for my purpose, I am continually using Photo Realism to make it evident that a photograph was rendered to achieve an end result.

Using predominantly contemporary Photo Realists' beliefs and opinions as my main resource material, comparisons were made of their unique styles so as to present the various uses of the photograph …

The Costuming Of Hair: An Interdisciplinary Study, Mary E. Yarbrough Jan 1980

The Costuming Of Hair: An Interdisciplinary Study, Mary E. Yarbrough

Masters Theses

This paper discussed the interdisciplinary study of costuming in general and specifically that of the musical, Hair. In addition to the discipline of theatre, costuming employs several other art forms and thereby may be considered an interdisciplinary art form. Basic to the development of costumes for Hair was knowledge of literature, visual arts and history. It is necessary to read and interpret a play very carefully in terms of relating the written words of the script to the costumes of the character. The actual designing of costumes entails basic drawing and design abilities as well as a creative artistic …

The Work Of Brian Sullan In Relation To Contemporary Non-Objective Painting, 1979-1980, Brian Sullan Jan 1980

The Work Of Brian Sullan In Relation To Contemporary Non-Objective Painting, 1979-1980, Brian Sullan

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explain my current body of work in terms of both personal interpretation and by means of relating it to ideas associated with a modern philosophy in painting that focuses on the relationships between the formal elements of line, space, color, and form, called "non-objective" painting. Painting becomes a statement about itself and the way in which paint is manipulated over a given surface. By disregarding traditional concepts of painting, the artist comes into contact with his emotions in a more direct way.

The first half of the paper is devoted to an explanation …

The Use Of The Blueprinting Process On Fiber, Lisa D. Larson Jan 1980

The Use Of The Blueprinting Process On Fiber, Lisa D. Larson

Masters Theses

This thesis is a summary of what one student has done with the process of blueprinting as applied to fiber. Persons interested in the dyeing or painting of warps for weaving may benefit in reading this paper as it introduces another facet of warp application.

The blueprinting process used is the same technique engineers use to reproduce plans and drawings. It is a nonsilver photographic technique that makes use of ferric salts which, when mixed with certain other chemicals and exposed to ultraviolet light, form a colored byproduct.

The research was begun with the study of the application of the …

Exploration In Design, Graphic Communications And The Creative Process, Starla A. Stensaas

Masters Theses

In lieu of the traditional thesis, I have chosen to culminate the Master of Arts in Related Arts program with a creative project and a paper that describes and evaluates the completion of the project. The project involved a personal aesthetic and technical development of the aesthetic in graphic design and communications. Documentation of the creative arts project is presented in a portfolio which includes graphic designs, publications, and news feature stories. The project is interdisciplinary in that it involves skills in art (design) and English (writing) as well as effective interdisciplinary communication skills necessary to produce interdepartmental publications.

Included …

Cezanne, The Unknowing Father Of Modern Art, David Thomas Jan 1980

Cezanne, The Unknowing Father Of Modern Art, David Thomas

Masters Theses

In this paper, Cezanne's life and work are discussed with emphasis on his influence on the Modern Movement in Art. Questions are raised concerning the interpretation of his work both by art historians and artists. This, in turn, casts doubt on some of the premises of Modernism. It is important to realize that Cezanne had a great respect for the art of the old masters and, had he lived, would probably have been abhorred by modernist developments.

To understand Cezanne's complex attitude, his background is extensively dealt with in a biographical section. His relationship with the realist novelist Emile Zola …

An Approach To Metalsmithing And Its Correlation To Specific Drawings, Susan Isabel Randall Jan 1980

An Approach To Metalsmithing And Its Correlation To Specific Drawings, Susan Isabel Randall

Masters Theses

The paper is concerned with my approach to metalsmithing which is directly correlated to my drawings; developing the two-dimensional plane and evolving into three-dimensional metal pieces. The lines of my drawings have become stimulus for my metal work; resolving into strong, linear, textural elements. I discuss three pieces which I have created and some drawings relating the transitions from paper to metal and metal to paper.

My references for these creatures are usually drawn from specific areas which have captured my interest. I have been considerably influenced by Early Irish, Celtic art and the Medieval French Grotesque art. The Celtic …

Two Sculptural Fabrications That Utilize Tension, David Robert Olson Jan 1980

Two Sculptural Fabrications That Utilize Tension, David Robert Olson

Masters Theses

The problem chosen is one which utilizes the fabrication of parts to be constructed into a unified sculptural whole. The documentation of the fabrication of two sculptural statements is presented in this paper. A personal process of finalizing a finished piece will be presented. The works in the following pages are from similar ideas, yet different in their approach because of the two separate materials utilized--mild steel and quarter-sawed white oak. The first documented piece discussed is in steel; the second, in wood. What guides the approach to the works as sculptural ideas will first be encountered.

I am involved …

British Reaction To German Foreign Policy, January 1933 To June 1936, Nigel J. Cox Jan 1980

British Reaction To German Foreign Policy, January 1933 To June 1936, Nigel J. Cox

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the foreign policy inter-action between Britain and Germany from January, 1933 to June, 1936, and to analyse British action, reaction and aims in foreign policy during that time.

In Chapter I, I deal with three broad ideas by way of introduction. First, there is an analysis of those groups which are acting and reacting in the sphere of foreign policy. There are four groups enumerated: the governmental or official group; the parliamentary group; the press; and, finally, public opinion. The make-up of these groups, the sources for discovering their reactions, and the …

Escape From Reality: A Comparative Study Of Bleak House And Little Dorrit, Julie L. Mcmillen Jan 1980

Escape From Reality: A Comparative Study Of Bleak House And Little Dorrit, Julie L. Mcmillen

Masters Theses

During the later period of his career, Charles Dickens wrote Bleak House (1853) and Little Dorrit (1857). Both of these novels share a common theme: those who face life squarely, though scarred, survive while those who try to escape do not.

In developing this theme Dickens uses parallel types of major characters. The motherly concern for others exhibited by Esther Summerson is repeated in Amy Dorrit. The irresponsibility of Richard Carstone reappears in William Dorrit. Finally, the protective concern of John Jarndyce reoccurs in Arthur Clennam.

Dickens develops these characters in five basic ways: the narrator, either omniscient or first-person, …

Herman Melville And Paul Tillich: An Ontological Interpretation Of Billy Budd, Michael E. Gress Jan 1980

Herman Melville And Paul Tillich: An Ontological Interpretation Of Billy Budd, Michael E. Gress

Masters Theses

The traditional approaches to Herman Melville's Billy Budd focus upon the question of whether or not the story was Melville's final statement of acceptance or irony. Both arguments are sociological in nature in that the different sides argue that Melville either finally accepts or continues to reject by irony, the forms of society. The acceptance critics contend that Melville ends by seeing value in the forms because of their use for maintaining order in society; the irony critics claim that Melville was taking a final satirical poke at society's limiting forms and authority.

My thesis differs from these traditional arguments …

The Innocent Narrator In Mark Twain's Roughing It, John R. Fisher Jan 1980

The Innocent Narrator In Mark Twain's Roughing It, John R. Fisher

Masters Theses

Mark Twain in his travel narrative Roughing It presents a naive, innocent narrator from the East who ventures forth into the largely uncivilized Western frontier during the exciting silver mining boom of the 1860's. In his sojourn the innocent narrator encounters many people, places, customs, values, and experiences that are unfamiliar to him, and because of his status as a tenderfoot unacquainted with the frontier, he is often made a dupe by the mischievous old-timers in the West.

The innocent narrator must go through numerous initiations before he is accepted as a member of the vernacular community. In these various …

Homiletics Courses In Five Major Protestant Denominations: A Rhetorical Analysis, Ricky W. Manwaring Jan 1980

Homiletics Courses In Five Major Protestant Denominations: A Rhetorical Analysis, Ricky W. Manwaring

Masters Theses

I. The Nature and Purpose of the Study. The hypothesis of this study was that the nature of the rhetorical training currently offered by major Protestant denominations could be discovered by analyzing the homiletic texts used by those denominations in their respective homiletics courses. It was the purpose of this study, through analyzing the homilectics textbooks used, to answer two questions: (1) What rhetorical canons are being included, or excluded from, the basic homiletics courses of the Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, and Episcopalians? and (2) What differences and similarities, if any, exist in the homiletics courses of the Baptists, Methodists, …

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight Jan 1980

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight

Masters Theses

The conflict in the Middle East is a turbulent situation of great significance to the entire world. This study examines the internal political scene of Israel and its affect on the overall Middle East situation. It focuses on ideology, structure, and policy within Israel as components of that scene.

The ideology of Zionism provided the justification for the creation of Israel and continues to form the basis for governmental decision making there. An analysis of the principles of Zionism and of the statements, writings, and actions of Zionist leaders showed that the ideology could reasonably be interpreted as racist and …
