Success And Failure In The Life Of Edwin Arlington Robinson, Katey Ford May 1992

Success And Failure In The Life Of Edwin Arlington Robinson, Katey Ford

Honors Theses

Edwin Arlington Robinson always felt that writing poetry was the only career that he could pursue in his life, but also always worried whether it was a worthy pursuit in the eyes of the culture in which he was raised. In a small town like Gardiner, Maine, where the 1690s' Puritan ethic was nearly as strong centuries later in the 1890s, the concept of a career in poetry or any artistic pursuit was absurd but not nearly as absurd as being successful at it. His grounding in Gardiner's values left an indelible stamp on his life and his poetry. Like …

Stained Glass In England From 1330-1460, Jennifer Stanger

Honors Theses

Stained glass is more precisely named painted glass, because of the enameling process. However, because stained glass is the popular term, it is used throughout the paper.

Please note that I have retained the original spellings in the quotes of both primary and secondary sources.

New Directions : Dewey, Aesthetics, And Psychology, David Clark Apr 1992

New Directions : Dewey, Aesthetics, And Psychology, David Clark

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to determine whether psychological information is relevant to solving aesthetic problems. Along the way I will point out that there are disparate senses of the word "psychology" and I will show how John Dewey can be perceived historically as an early contributor to what we now call "cultural psychology", which I believe is a viable alternative to experimental aesthetics.

Crime And The Common Law In England, 1580-1640, Cara Swinden Apr 1992

Crime And The Common Law In England, 1580-1640, Cara Swinden

Honors Theses

In this paper, I have endeavored to illustrate many of the forms of crime committed during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. I have also attempted to show the role of local people in the law. The workings of the common law of England have been simplified to outline the investigations, the trials, and the punishments received by felons and trespassers. Much of my research came from original manuscripts. Therefore, I have retained the original spellings, word order, and phrases, neither correcting nor modernizing the words, word order, or phrases, of the quotations and excerpts from those original manuscripts.

Maelstrom, Brian S. Miller Jan 1992

Maelstrom, Brian S. Miller

Honors Theses

In fulfilling the course requirements for the Honors Seminar on Chaos, I decided to produce a work of fiction that explored what I felt to be some interesting applications of correct speculations on chaos. The universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation was chosen for several reasons to be the fictional medium of these applications. First, I had no desire to invent a universe out of whole-cloth. Second, I felt my purposes would be better served if I had some pre-set limits to work with, which Star Trek provided. Third, I just wanted to see if I could do it. …

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore Jan 1992

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore

Honors Theses

PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. Since I became a religion major at Colby, I have always been interested in liberation theology. As I read about the poverty, injustice and violence that pervades Northern Ireland, I was reminded of the context in which Gustavo Gutierrez, Tissa Balasuriya, and Elsa Tamez write and live. The …
