Prostitutes And Prostitution: A Case Study Of “Disorderly Women” In Hamilton, Ontario, 1879-1886, Shelly Marie Blom

This cognate essay examines prostitutes and prostitution in Hamilton from 1879 to 1886. It contends that the women who were arrested for prostitution offenses in Hamilton in that period were involved in the trade as a result of a number of factors working in concert. These factors included ethnicity, occupation, age, marital status, addiction and contemporary social structures and mores. In particular, women of Irish background and/or those who had worked as domestic servants appeared to be especially vulnerable to the streets. Once charged as prostitutes, these women faced further difficulty in being regarded as anything but “fallen” and deviant, …

This paper addresses the Search For Meaning in Grief by attempting to examine two theoretical perspectives: Victor Frankl's Search for Meaning and Douglas Hall's Theology of the Cross. These two models serve as paradigms for different polarities, in critically reflecting upon the grief experience. By exploring the psycho-therapeutic and theological issues raised by both Frankl and Hall, weaknesses and deficiencies in one are effectively addressed by the other, resulting in a more holistic model for grief ministry. This study proposes that family systems therapy can prove useful in understanding Biblical families and thus add to our understanding of the Bible. Employing family systems therapy is appropriate because the Biblical narrative contains a comprehensive treatment of the human family. The Bible deals with family overall, many specific families as in the Jacob cycle, and ends with a vision of the family of God that exists already in the kingdom of heaven. An Unblinking Gaze: Readerly Response-Ability And Racial Reconstructions In Toni Morrison's 'The Bluest Eye' And 'Beloved', Lara Mary Fulton

This thesis examines Toni Morrison's reconstruction of racial representations in The Bluest Eye and Beloved. Morrison stresses the need for a transformation of current representations of black and white culture in her critical study, Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination, in which Morrison examines how black culture has been (mis)represented and (mis)perceived by white Western culture and discourse. She argues that idealized and valorized notions of "whiteness," white identity, and white culture have been constructed from denigrating, binary oppositional (mis)perceptions of "blackness," black identity, and black culture. Narrow Escapes: A Feminist Deconstruction Of Anorexia Nervosa In Women, Yvonne L. Mireau

This thesis is a feminist deconstruction of anorexia nervosa (AN) in women. It begins with questioning the truth claims about AN established by the psychological and psychiatric fields. After an overview of the medical model literature and the feminist literature on eating problems, a critical analysis is used to deconstruct the sociocultural elements of AN. The purpose of this analysis is to critically examine the assumptions which have shaped how clinicians approach the phenomenon of AN in their practice with clients. What has been accepted as underlying psychopathology is deconstructed to reveal normative culturally constructed factors. A paradigm shift towards …
