Ars, Virtus, Impetus: Gladiatorial Training And Roman Legionaries, Daniel Porter

In 105 BCE, the Roman consul Publius Rutilius Rufus employed gladiatorial training for his legionaries. This thesis examines the physiological and psychological consequences of this style of training on the human body in an effort to understand why these particular soldiers were so effective. I used experiential testing alongside primary and secondary source research to examine how this process better prepared Roman troops for engaging in actual combat.

In a standard tutoring session, positive reinforcement in commonly used to bolster a student’s confidence, as well as point out good aspects of the writing. This paper explores the use of Behavioral Skills Training (BST) in tutoring, an Applied Behavioral Analysis procedure in which instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback are used to teach proficiency in a skill. This paper examines the benefits of using BST in difficult sessions where standard protocol would be of little value to the student’s writing ability. The purpose of this study was to examine how students perceive the most common methods of recruitment for research participation, and whether these recruitment strategies are perceived by the participants to be coercive. Ethical research guidelines prohibit the use of coercion in recruiting participants. Previous studies in this area have either focused on the perceptions of the researchers, or have approached the concept of coercion in a limited way. This study treated coercion as a multidimensional construct and examined student perceptions. Additionally, participant responses indicated which recruitment practices resulted in a decision to participate in the research. Findings indicate that …
