Estampas De Mi Tierra- Vignettes Of My Land, Angel Berrios Dec 2010

Estampas De Mi Tierra- Vignettes Of My Land, Angel Berrios

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

With the intention of expressing my heritage, I have recalled all of my artistic knowledge in order to create this series of art works. I am very much in agreement with the route of artistic expression that I have followed in order to capture these images. I have given form to my message by following a technique involving the application of a combination of strokes and dots of color. I do not have, nor did I use photographs or any other visual resource to aid me in the creation of these paintings. I am solely inspired by my ideals as …

Ecos De Barro De La Memoria A La Imagen De La Imagen Al Poema, Rossy Evelin Lima-Padilla

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Valley Palm, Melissa E. King Dec 2010

Valley Palm, Melissa E. King

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In the critical introduction of this thesis, I explore how choices and consequences affect a life, my life. This leads to a discussion of the struggle I had with labeling my work nonfiction. I also explore the effect structure has on the narrative arc and characters in a work, and discuss my process of deciding on a form for my creative thesis. Highlighted in this discussion is the influence of feminism and feminist authors. Finally, I intimate my issues with my cultural identity, and how this is reflected in my story and my place in the literary world. These are …

The Impact Of Caesar Augustus On Roman Trade, William Edwin Wilson Dec 2010

The Impact Of Caesar Augustus On Roman Trade, William Edwin Wilson

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This paper studies Gaius Julius Octavian Caesar (Augustus) who combined the military/political expertise of a Roman Patrician with the practical business sense of the upper middle class (Equites) and as a consequence, his administration revived Rome’s economic fortunes and launched a new period of economic prosperity for the Empire. It also explores the specific actions of Augustus and those near to him that led directly to the revival of Rome’s economic fortunes and the remodeling of Rome and its many celebrated monuments and essential buildings. It concludes with a final summation of the man and his contributions to Rome’s success …

The Conservative Conversation, Heather Hall Dec 2010

The Conservative Conversation, Heather Hall

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The conservative movement is defined by its ideology as well as its rhetoric. Richard Weaver’s conversion to the Right offers an opportunity to define conservatism and conservative rhetoric through his hierarchy of argumentation, and his examination of Plato’s Phaedrus allows an examination of the speaker’s nature and the nature of rhetoric. Glenn Beck, one of today’s most controversial conservative representatives, also deserves examination for his ideology and rhetoric. Both Richard Weaver and Glenn Beck bear scrutiny as influential members of the conservative movement and the role their rhetoric has in the conservative conversation today.

Commodifying Creativity: Class, Labor, And Authorship In Isabella Whitney's “A Sweet Nosgay”, Janette Cavazos Aug 2010

Commodifying Creativity: Class, Labor, And Authorship In Isabella Whitney's “A Sweet Nosgay”, Janette Cavazos

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Isabella Whitney, the first woman to publish secular verse under her own name, is generally considered by scholars in terms of gender. My thesis argues she should be seen, instead, through her identity as a working-class writer. Her book of poetry, A Sweet Nosgay (1573), is shaped by her efforts to make her way in the world of print publication by commodifying creativity into a product. My thesis assesses the content of her poetry on the basis of class, which was the impetus for this commodification. My focus gives full authority to her as a Renaissance writer, one who resists …

Chief Lawyer Of The Nez Perce: Reassessing The Career Of A Cultural Broker, Daniel R. Gibbs Aug 2010

Chief Lawyer Of The Nez Perce: Reassessing The Career Of A Cultural Broker, Daniel R. Gibbs

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Chief Lawyer of the Nez Perce has been misunderstood for over 150 years. The purpose of this thesis is to dispel the myth of the good/bad dichotomy about a two-dimensional Chief Lawyer. A man lacking any deeper motives than to gain favor with the Whites and get what he could for himself before the offer at hand was removed from the negotiating table. By reexamining the literature with new eyes one might apply a different paradigm exposing another dimension to Lawyer’s character, one that has long been overlooked. This study will use the concept of the “working misunderstanding” as its …

Texas Rangers To Border Patrol The Shift In Border Security In The 1920'S: The Legacy Of Undemocratic And Often Violent Origins, Rodolfo Arriaga Aug 2010

Texas Rangers To Border Patrol The Shift In Border Security In The 1920'S: The Legacy Of Undemocratic And Often Violent Origins, Rodolfo Arriaga

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study will explore the history of the United States Border Patrol (USBP) along the U.S./Mexico Border of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Texas, its position as defender of the border between Anglo Saxon Americans and ethnic Mexicans, and the repression of that history by the legitimizing actors within Texas and the United States. The shift of border security from the Texas Rangers to the USBP in 1924 resulted in ethnic Mexicans in Texas viewing the USBP not only in a negative manner but with an ethnic cultural phobia. That the result of former Texas Rangers being employed by the …

‘Diversa De Mí Misma’: Silence As Performative Resistance In Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Marcia A. Caltabiano-Ponce Aug 2010

‘Diversa De Mí Misma’: Silence As Performative Resistance In Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz, Marcia A. Caltabiano-Ponce

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s silences, including her final and mysterious withdrawal from letters, were not empty spaces at all but highly loaded performative resistances to patriarchal control. My work is based on Judith Butler's poststructural theory on performance and subject construction, with support from postcolonial and feminist theories. The approach is a break from the historical and popular gendered discourses that surround her final years, one that explores the loaded gaps and borders that provide liminal spaces for the transcendence of her voice and gender over the ages. I address the research, speculation, and theories that have misread …

Feminism, Imperialism, Utopianism, And Science Fiction In Margaret Cavendish's “Blazing World", Terina Garza Vazquez Aug 2010

Feminism, Imperialism, Utopianism, And Science Fiction In Margaret Cavendish's “Blazing World", Terina Garza Vazquez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Margaret Lucas Cavendish (1623-1673), the Duchess of Newcastle, was a woman writer in seventeenth-century England who was the first woman in history to be allowed within the halls of the Royal Society. She was also the first woman to write what should be considered the first work of science fiction by a woman titled The Description of a New World Called, The Blazing World, or simply The Blazing World. This thesis focuses on The Blazing World which offers a proto-feminist critique of imperialism and of gender relations in seventeenth-century England and of England’s emergent imperialist culture and points to a …
