Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera 1859–1895, J. Agustín Pastén B. Dec 1997

Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera 1859–1895, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Spanish Language and Literature

Manual Gutiérrez Nájera, one of Mexico's best-known writers of the 19th century, has traditionally been considered one of four precursors of the Modernist period of Spanish American literature (1875–1925). It was customarily believed that the genesis of Modernismo lay in innovations in poetry, thus it was Nájera's poetic production that received the attention of the critics for a long time. In the past few years, however, after careful examination of the modernist writers' prose works, scholars have discovered not only that the first signs of Modernismo are to be found in prose, but that Nájera's major contribution to the modernist …

Enrique González Martínez 1871–1952, J. Agustín Pastén B. Dec 1997

Enrique González Martínez 1871–1952, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Spanish Language and Literature

Some have called González Martínez the last great modernist poet; others prefer to consider him the first of the postmodernists. In the end, both opinions are partially correct. He never completely abandoned certain key features of modernism. Similarly, by avoiding its superficial aspects and focusing instead on the hidden property of things, González Martínez paved the way for a type of poetic sensibility that for the first time in Latin American literature paid attention to local concerns. González Martínez’s poetic production was abundant, even though he led a very active life. He was a medical doctor, professor, and diplomat to …

Ramón López Velarde 1888–1921, J. Agustín Pastén B. Dec 1997

Ramón López Velarde 1888–1921, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Spanish Language and Literature

Modern Mexican poetry begins with Ramón López Velarde. He is undoubtedly one of the most genuine poetic voices to inhabit that hard-to-classify period in Spanish American literature that stretches from Modernism to the vanguard poets. As a major representative of Spanish American postmodernismo (that is, the period that followed Modernismo), he is the first writer in Mexico to thematize the Mexican province in a new way. But he ought not be reduced to being the poet of the province. López Velarde was above all the creator of a new poetic language; this alone distinguishes him from González Martínez, for example. …

Resistance To Rescue: The Indians Of Bahapki And Mrs. Annie E. K. Bidwell, Margaret D. Jacobs Dec 1997

Resistance To Rescue: The Indians Of Bahapki And Mrs. Annie E. K. Bidwell, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Annie Bidwell, whose story is told here, was an exemplar of the nineteenth-century Euro-American female humanitarian reform impulse. She worked diligently to introduce Christianity and domesticity to the Maidu and Bahapki Indians who lived and worked for her husband at Rancho Chico, paying special attention to the women and children. Bidwell had no doubt that her insistence on acculturation was in their best interests. But from the perspective of the Indians, she was a destroyer. Insofar as they could, they resisted her efforts to change their religion, their child-rearing practices, and their family relationships. Margaret Jacobs successfully “reads through” Bidwell’s …

Se Condouloir Ou Consoler? Les Condoléances Dans Les Manuels Épistolaires De L'Ancien Régime, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Oct 1997

Se Condouloir Ou Consoler? Les Condoléances Dans Les Manuels Épistolaires De L'Ancien Régime, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

Review Of The Twisted Muse: Musicians And Their Music In The Third Reich, By Michael Kater., Alan E. Steinweis Oct 1997

Review Of The Twisted Muse: Musicians And Their Music In The Third Reich, By Michael Kater., Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Ths is a serious book about "serious" music. Michael Kater's Twisted Muse is the author's second major contribution in five years to the study of music under National Socialism. In hs previous volume, Different Drummers (Oxford, 1992), Kater provided a detailed and nuanced examination of jazz under the Nazis. In his new book, Kater turns his attention to the world of serious (ernste) music, a category encompassing not only classical compositions and performances, but also a good deal of the contemporary music of the 1930s and 1940s.This book bears many of the hallmarks of Kater's earlier work on …

The "Domestic Air" Of Wilderness: Henry Thoreau And Joe Polis In The Maine Woods, Thomas Lynch Oct 1997

The "Domestic Air" Of Wilderness: Henry Thoreau And Joe Polis In The Maine Woods, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Thoreau's "Allegash and the East Branch," from the Maine Woods collection, provides a particularly useful excursion on which to examine his wilderness ideology. It is one of the final works in the Thoreau corpus and hence suggests his mature vision. On ths trip he spent significant time in intimate contact with what he considered to be wild nature; and he did so in the company of Joe Polis, a sophisticated Penobscot Indian who was literate in white culture as well as an expert in his own culture's ways of being at home in nature. Polis lived on Indian Island in …

School At The Center: Mending Breaks In The Broken Heartland, Paul Olson Aug 1997

School At The Center: Mending Breaks In The Broken Heartland, Paul Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Some years ago I was teaching a course called "The Literature of Agriculture," accounts of how farmers and rural people made a living over time. Hesiod, Virgil, Chaucer's rural tales, George Eliot, Great Plains modem farm novels, and Wendell Berry's writings about the unsettling of America were the fare. One of my students remarked in passing, "Don't know if I can read this stuff. I only went to a small high schooL" He knew nothing of the literature about smallness and quality in education and had no pride of community. Later I asked the rural class if they planned to …

Review Of The Scepter And The Star: The Messiahs Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And Other Ancient Literature, Ed. John J. Collins, Sidnie White Crawford Aug 1997

Review Of The Scepter And The Star: The Messiahs Of The Dead Sea Scrolls And Other Ancient Literature, Ed. John J. Collins, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The popularity of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the controversy surrounding their publication have led to the appearance of a spate of books on the Qumran scrolls in recent years. With so many books on the shelves, it is difficult for the reader to differentiate the good from the bad, the wheat from the chaff. Among the books recently published concerning the scrolls, John Collins's book The Scepter and the Star represents a nugget of pure gold.

Review Of Michael Berkowitz, Zionist Culture And West European Jewry Before The First World War, Alan E. Steinweis May 1997

Review Of Michael Berkowitz, Zionist Culture And West European Jewry Before The First World War, Alan E. Steinweis

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In this elegantly written and nicely designed book, Michael Berkowitz offers the reader a fascinating discussion of Zionism as a cultural phenomenon among the assimilated Jews of western and central Europe in the two decades preceding World War I. Berkowitz is particularly interested in how the Zionist movement employed political symbols, myths, and icons in an effort to spawn a new Jewish national consciousness to which assimilated bourgeois Jews in France, Britain, and Germany could safely subscribe without compromising their allegiance to the country of their citizenship. In contrast to the masses of Russian-Polish and Rumanian Jews, for whom migration …
