The American Democratic Tradition & The Quest For Access & Equity In Higher Education: The Browns And Blues Of Social Change, Amilcar Shabazz

In this lecture I revisit the meaning of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision and the legal and social struggles that led to the ruling and its consequences especially in the area of higher educational opportunity. I develop the idea of the American Democratic Tradition not as a fossilized ideal but as a contested terrain. The Brown decision and the blues of social change as a protracted, continuous process of struggle is the moment I am trying to render here in this lecture.

Racial Terror & The Attempt To Stop The Desegregation Of Lamar State College Of Technology, Amilcar Shabazz

The desegregation of Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont was marked by racial terror. The clash at Lamar climaxed a protracted antidiscrimination campaign that developed during the Second World War, escalated in 1949 when Lamar grew from a locally supported junior college to a state-supported senior college, and turned into a court battle in the wake of the victorious 1950 Supreme Court decision in Sweatt v. Painter which opened certain graduate and professional school programs at the University of Texas to African Americans. The Caning Of Charles Sumner: Slavery, Race, And Ideology In The Age Of The Civil War, M Sinha

Analyzes the discussion of slavery, race, and ideology inspired by the caning of antislavery Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts in the Senate chamber on May 22, 1856, by South Carolinian Congressman Preston Smith Brooks. Reaction of Brooks to Sumner's 'The Crime of Kansas' speech; Fundamental political divide over racial slavery in the U.S. revealed by the reactions to Brooks' assault on Sumner; Emergence of Sumner as one of the foremost voices of emancipation and black rights in the national political arena; Event's revelation of how the concepts of freedom, democracy, and citizenship were not static but constantly contested.
