Asian American Politics: A Case Study Of Hmong Americans In St. Paul, Mn, Thilee Yost
Asian American Politics: A Case Study Of Hmong Americans In St. Paul, Mn, Thilee Yost
Honors College
Despite being a relatively new refugee group relocating to the United States during the 1970s and 1980s, Hmong Americans have emerged as a major political influence in St. Paul, Minnesota. With a population of over 68,000 Hmong Americans, St. Paul has been called the Hmong capital of the world. It has a very dense network of Hmong individuals who have proven to be an emerging political force. During the past November 2018 midterms seven, a record number, of Hmong Americans were elected to public office in the Twin Cities area. Since Asian Americans are expected to make up 10% of …
Awakening From A Dream, Liam Reading
Awakening From A Dream, Liam Reading
Honors College
I have created a hand-bound book of copper etchings and poetry called Awakening From A Dream. This project consists of over thirty handmade, printed, and illuminated plates that symbolize an introspective journey through the mind and out the other side. What begins with a looming existential dread transforms into an acceptance for the patterns of creation and destruction. Self-pity and fear of facing the unknown are met with delving deep into the recesses of the mind in order to reconcile my waking life with my nightmares. This is a process of overcoming heartbreak and depression, and becoming self-actualized. In …
The Tower Of London Becoming A Tourist Attraction In The 19th Century, Catherine Mcdonald
The Tower Of London Becoming A Tourist Attraction In The 19th Century, Catherine Mcdonald
Honors College
Underfunded and decaying, the Tower of London’s outlook at the beginning at the 19th century was bleak. Then used as a military garrison, its former glory as a palace and prison was mostly forgotten. The Tower of London was transformed into a tourist attraction in the Victorian Age because of the rise of the middle class and the changing values that they had. The middle class valued education and wanted to use their leisure time to further their knowledge. History in particular interested them. Popular culture reflected this change in attitude about a subject previously not looked to for …

Microscopia: A Virtual Museum Of Organisms Created With Sem Photogrammetry, Ian Donnelly
Microscopia: A Virtual Museum Of Organisms Created With Sem Photogrammetry, Ian Donnelly
Honors College
For many, insects and other minute organisms are regarded with disgust, disinterest, and labeled as “pests.” Often they are either in the way or out of sight. There is, however, more than meets the eye. These organisms not only play a monumental role in the world’s ecosystems—a truth that has become ever more apparent in the face of global climate change—but they also have astounding physiological complexities that humans can’t quite see without the aid of a microscope. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) offers a highly detailed view, the ability to see specimens from all angles, and a glimpse into …
The Personal Is Poetic: A Case For Poetry Therapy, Kimberly Crowley
The Personal Is Poetic: A Case For Poetry Therapy, Kimberly Crowley
Honors College
“The Personal is Poetic: A Case for Poetry Therapy” explores and deconstructs the history, models, and therapeutic qualities of poetry therapy through an autoethnographic lens of loss and growth. Inspired by the passing of my mother and my foray into poetry as a form of therapeutic expression, I dive into the existing literature on therapeutic usages of poetry and illustrate its connections to my writing and personal experiences. I include narrative accounts of my experiences of grief, growth, and coming of age, as well as samples of my poetry chosen to illustrate principles, model components, and poetic devices related to …
Inanna: A Modern Interpretation, Erin Butts
Inanna: A Modern Interpretation, Erin Butts

Sumer has a culture lost to history. Currently, the University of Maine offers no courses about ancient Mesopotamia, one of the first civilizations. Over the years, historians have been translating the cuneiform tablets containing their religion and history. There has been one adaptation of those translations, by Diane Wolkstein in 1983 to bring the stories to a wider audience through a collection of stories around the goddess Inanna. Wolkstein’s Inanna is a second wave feminist icon but reliant on an essentialist idea of womanhood. This thesis seeks to broaden her audience, analyze the context in which Wolkstein produced her adaptation, …
The Good Family, James Hannigan
The Good Family, James Hannigan
Honors College
The Good Family is a story following a group of seventeens in their historic and scrutinized ’68 Birth-Night Battalia. The characters, who have trained since as early as age twelve and as late as fourteen – with heavy combat training for up to a year and as little as six months, are well prepared by the Tokien system. Demonstrating their Link-worthy will be a challenge that none of them can fully imagine, as this year is the unveiling of a Tokien-engineered tech development that will undoubtedly change the course humanity rides in the closing of the 22nd century.
An Intersectional Feminist Approach To Lyme Disease Epidemiology, Meghan Frisard
An Intersectional Feminist Approach To Lyme Disease Epidemiology, Meghan Frisard
Honors College
Nationally, Maine is the state with the second highest incidence of Lyme disease. While the spread of Lyme disease is generally attributable to ecological factors that affect the life cycle of Lyme-spreading ticks, socioeconomic factors may have substantial impacts on diagnosis and reporting of human cases. Socioeconomic factors could influence one’s ability to see a healthcare provider and ultimately be diagnosed with and treated for Lyme. Additionally, access to and treatment within the healthcare system is often gendered. I hypothesize that certain socioeconomic factors will have a negative correlation with Lyme disease incidence among the general population and among women, …
The Snake Goddess Dethroned: Deconstructing The Work And Legacy Of Sir Arthur Evans, Lindsay Taylor
The Snake Goddess Dethroned: Deconstructing The Work And Legacy Of Sir Arthur Evans, Lindsay Taylor
Honors College
While the Minoan Snake Goddess is one of the most reproduced and familiar images in the art historical canon, her function—and indeed, her very essence—continues to be shaped by the man who coined the term Minoan and discovered the site in which she and her sisters lay for generations undisturbed. When Sir Arthur Evans concluded that these statuettes were evidence of Minoan worship of a single great Mother Goddess in 1903, he finally fulfilled his aim discover a prehistoric European civilization to rival that of the ancient Near East. However, Evans did not simply discover these statuettes (and on a …
