Until quite recently, most of what we knew about antebellum slavery and the African-American experience in the postwar years resulted from generalizations regarding the cotton South. The tendency to focus on the heart of Dixie failed to take into account certain economic realities in the Upper South that shaped experiences under slavery and influenced freedpeople's adaptation to a new order.

The important point about this contribution to an email list is the date, 1992. At the time, i was a research fellow at the University of Western Australia. In the years since, although there have been some changes, a large number of American Masonic organizations remain closed to black members. For example, it will be a very long time before one sees black leaders in a number of Southern states' Masonic bodies like the Shrine, Commandary, Eastern Star, and so on. In contrast one must add that certain jurisdictions such as Washington D.C. are integrated. But they grant recognition to …

The Nwagu Aneke Igbo Script: Its Origins, Features And Potentials As A Medium Of Alternative Literacy In African Languages, Chukwuma Azuonye
Chukwuma Azuonye
The present paper is a study of the origins, features and significance of the Nwagu Aneke Igbo Syllabary (otherwise known as the Umuleri Igbo Script), one of the thirty or so indigenous systems of writing which (re-)emerged in West Africa during the colonial period as a medium for challenging alien cultural values and for the re-assertion of the superiority of African spiritual and moral traditions and of the thought-patterns which lie behind them. Beyond the claims of a one-time prosperous land-owner and diviner, the late Ogbuevi Nwagu Aneke of the village of Umuleri in the Anambra Local Government Area of …

Generational Theory And Collective Autobiography, John D. Hazlett
Generational Theory And Collective Autobiography, John D. Hazlett
John D Hazlett
Hazlett's essay examines the emergence of generational theory at the beginning of the 20th Century, considers some of the reasons for its popularity, and then shows how generationalism influenced the autobiographical writing of two self-proclaimed generational groups: the writers who came of age in the 1920s, and the group of activists and writers who came of age in the 1960s.

On The Derivation Of Hebrew Forms With The +Ut Suffix, Shmuel Bolozky
On The Derivation Of Hebrew Forms With The +Ut Suffix, Shmuel Bolozky
Shmuel Bolozky
The productive class of Hebrew nouns with the + ut suffix is described and analyzed, with particular attention to the nature of the derivation process involved. The assumption prevalent in the literature, that + ut derivation is a linear process, unrelated to any particular discontiuous pattern (miškal), is shown to be inaccurate. Some realizations are indeed linearly derived; others could be interpreted as either linear or discontinuous; but it can also be demonstrated that a third group of sub-patterns with + ut is best described as discontinuous, following given miškalim. The main argument for that third cluster of patterns being …

The Development Of Written Igbo Literature (Chapter 27), Chukwuma Azuonye
The Development Of Written Igbo Literature (Chapter 27), Chukwuma Azuonye
Chukwuma Azuonye
Against the background of the existence of indigenous writing systems (such as Nsibidi pictographic-ideographic signs and the Nwagu Aneke or Umuleri syllabary), this chapter surveys of the emergence of written literature in Igbo from the 19th century "linguistic labors" of the Christian missions (including collections and transcriptions of Igbo oral literature and translations of European classics into Igbo) and the promotion of supplementary readers in the first quarter of the 20th century which ushered in the first modern Igbo novel, Omenuko by Pita Nwana (1933). Modernist writing in Igbo is represented by the poetry collected in Aka Weta (From Different …
