When, Where, And Why Did The Change From Sabbath To Sunday Worship Take Place In The Early Church?, Robert K. Mciver Nov 2016

When, Where, And Why Did The Change From Sabbath To Sunday Worship Take Place In The Early Church?, Robert K. Mciver

Robert McIver

It is evident that Jesus and his earliest followers all observed the seventh-day Sabbath. After all, the earliest followers of Jesus were all pious Jews. That Luke observes – almost in passing – that it was Jesus’ custom to attend synagogue on Sabbaths (Luke 4:16) is only to be expected. Yet, today, most Christians observe Sunday as the day of worship, not the Sabbath. This article traces the evidence that has been used to answer the key questions, “When, where and why did the change in the day of worship from Sabbath to Sunday take place.”

A few writers attempt …

Twentieth-Century Approaches To The Matthean Community, Robert Mciver Nov 2016

Twentieth-Century Approaches To The Matthean Community, Robert Mciver

Robert McIver

While extended research into the Matthean Community is a relatively recent phenomenon in NT scholarship, most twentieth-century scholars working on the Gospel of Matthew have had either an explicit or implicit understanding of the Matthean Community against which they interpret the Gospel. This might be characterized as their understanding of the historical matrix out of which the Gospel arose, and their interest in this matrix grows out of the importance attached to reading the Gospel against its historical background. This article will examine the various ways this historical matrix has been understood.

The Problem Of Synoptic Relationships In The Development And Testing Of A Methodology For The Reconstruction Of The Matthean Community, Robert K. Mciver

Robert McIver

Problem. The problem faced in this study was to discover a method of obtaining data concerning the Matthean community in a way that does not pre-suppose a solution to the problem of Synoptic relationships. To find such a methodology has become desirable because of the recent reopening of the question of Synoptic relationships. Method. By comparing the Synoptic Gospels it is possible to detect patterns of differences between them. Particularly helpful is the material unique to the Gospel of Matthew. This is examined to discover the characteristic emphases of the Gospel. Further investigation showed that the sequences of events were …

The Bible And Ethics, Robert Mciver Nov 2016

The Bible And Ethics, Robert Mciver

Robert McIver

The Bible is not a handbook of ethics, but because biblical religion strongly links religious commitment to behaviour, the Bible deals deals extensively with ethical issues. It is precisely in the area of ethics that biblical religion makes itself real in the life of the believer, and it is the point at which the relevance or irrelevance of religion is felt most keenly. The question, "Is the Bible still relevant today?" is frequently answered in terms of the perceived ethics inherent in the Bible.

This article will survey some of the more prominent themes in biblical ethics, and will discover …

Implications Of New Data Pertaining To The Problem Of Synoptic Relationships, Robert Mciver Nov 2016

Implications Of New Data Pertaining To The Problem Of Synoptic Relationships, Robert Mciver

Robert McIver

This paper grows out of research done for reasons quite removed investigating the synoptic problem, but which threw up data that had direct, and unexpected implications for the relationships between the Synoptic Gospels. It attempts to pursue these implications in a methodical way which lays a basis for the rather novel hypothesis advanced. It will do so by first stating some definitions , then by pursuing common ground on which all involved in the debate are agreed, by outlining the new data and its limitations, and finally, by developing a thesis consistent with this data.
