Lucille Clifton's Mercy, Angela Dipace Sep 2009

Lucille Clifton's Mercy, Angela Dipace

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

In Mercy, Clifton situates herself and the reader amid the terror of September 11, 2001, and excavates from this horrific tragedy a sign of redemptive liberation. Clifton's most sensitive readers also point to the affirmative tone of her poetry which sustains and uplifts what otherwise might be a nihilistic view of life.

In her thirteenth book of published poetry - Mercy (2004), Lucille Clifton encapsulates many concepts which have evolved in nearly four decades of poetry making. Mercy demonstrates Clifton’s consistent and persistent adaptation of various spiritual traditions to arrive - at a vision of interconnectedness between the ordinary …

Protestant Observers Of Vatican Ii: A Bibliography, Peter Gavin Ferriby Sep 2009

Protestant Observers Of Vatican Ii: A Bibliography, Peter Gavin Ferriby

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

This bibliography is a working draft, insofar as no authoritative bibliography of observers (whether as formal periti or informally invited scholars) exists at this time.

An additional difficulty is conclusively to identify particular writers as Protestant Christians. For example, newspaper and other media reporters might have been formally Protestant (whether closely affiliated or distantly related), but did not identify their writings or observations as relevant to or influenced by any Protestant point of view. As a result, this bibliography lists entries whose authors in some sense identified themselves as Protestants, or representing the viewpoints of Protestant churches and organizations.

The Catholic Educational Tradition Between The Pinchers Of The Classical And Political Liberal Educational Ideals, Edward Papa Sep 2009

The Catholic Educational Tradition Between The Pinchers Of The Classical And Political Liberal Educational Ideals, Edward Papa

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

In this paper Edward Papa propose a brief investigation of the main questions which arise when one places the Catholic Intellectual Tradition in battle with its most important opponents. There are two main opponents of the Catholic educational tradition. Pressing from the one side is the classical educational ideal of the ancient Greeks. Bearing in from the other is the contemporary liberal educational ideal.

Emotion, Satire, And A Sense Of Place: Two Spanish Rivers In Lope De Vega’S Sonnets, Mark J. Mascia Jan 2009

Emotion, Satire, And A Sense Of Place: Two Spanish Rivers In Lope De Vega’S Sonnets, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

The article presents a critique of sonnets that appear in the books "Rimas humanas" (1602), "Rimas humanas y divinas del licenciado Tomé de Burguillos (1634)," by Lope de Vega (1562-1635), particularly focusing on the Spanish rivers Betis, or Guadalquivir River, and the Manzanares River, which appear in the poems. Emphasis is given to the emotional significance of the rivers in the poems, Lope's move from Baroque literary conventions to the Petrarchan mode, and the figure Lucinda, who represents Micaela de Luján, one of Lope's lovers.

Adaptation Of Art History Courses To The Online Environment: Problems And Perspectives, Anahit Ter-Stepanian Jan 2009

Adaptation Of Art History Courses To The Online Environment: Problems And Perspectives, Anahit Ter-Stepanian

Art & Design Faculty Publications

Distance learning poses new problems for instructors and changes the traditional understanding of instructional design. The adaptation of traditional, face-to-face courses to asynchronous online format entails redefining pedagogical practices and presents new challenges for designers and instructors resulting from the lack of direct student-instructor interaction. This is particularly pertinent in art history courses, where critical thinking, group discussions, critiquing works of art as well as assessment methods heavily rely on student’s physical presence in the classroom. Faculty members are skeptical of the effectiveness of distance learning and voice their concerns. The paper questions whether it is possible to ensure students’ …

Leisure And Liberal Education: A Plea For Uselessness, John E. Jalbert Jan 2009

Leisure And Liberal Education: A Plea For Uselessness, John E. Jalbert

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

A liberal education informs a person in the proper use of leisure. Liberal education, as the word liberal suggests, is intimately connected with the idea of personal freedom.

The central role of the liberal or liberating arts is to free us, if only for short periods of time, from mundane affairs, from the need to subordinate our lives, wills, and intellects to external demands, from the need—whether real or merely felt—to place ourselves under the sway of the marketplace in order to make a living. After all, human excellence requires more than the material ends that are procured through labor, …

"Who Would Believe What We Have Heard?": Christian Spirituality And Images From The Passion In Religious Art Of New Spain, June-Ann Greeley Jan 2009

"Who Would Believe What We Have Heard?": Christian Spirituality And Images From The Passion In Religious Art Of New Spain, June-Ann Greeley

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The colonial art of New Spain/Mexico provides the viewer with a locus of examination into the robust Christianity that emerged over time out of a native spirituality newly laden with the contours and images from the Old World theology of late medieval/early Catholic Reformation Spain. Franciscan and especially Jesuit missionaries, impelled by a devotional zealotry, championed an apocalyptic vision of hope and suff ering that was well suited for artistic expression. Religious art, whether or not patronized by European colonizers, became an instrument for the missionaries to teach and for the native artists to interrogate religious doctrine, and some artists, …

Professional Women: The Continuing Struggle For Acceptance And Equality, Pearl Jacobs, Linda Schain Jan 2009

Professional Women: The Continuing Struggle For Acceptance And Equality, Pearl Jacobs, Linda Schain

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

During the past fifty years, the situation of professional women has changed dramatically. Women have expanded their career aspirations. They are no longer confined to traditional female fields such as education or nursing. We have seen the integration of women into previously male dominated fields such as accounting, medicine, law, etc. Integration; however, does not necessarily mean acceptance and equality nor does it mean that the stress created by work-family conflict has been resolved. This paper will examine some of the issues that continue to plague women as they attempt to progress in their professional fields.

The Catholic Character Of Catholic Universities, Anthony J. Cernera Jan 2009

The Catholic Character Of Catholic Universities, Anthony J. Cernera

Mission Integration & Ministry Publications

The signs of the times, that we are living in the midst of, are dramatic, suggesting perhaps radical challenges, but potentially wonderful opportunities, for humanity and the Church, e.g., globalization; the pervasiveness of secularization in the Western world; the encounter with Islam and the increased importance of inter-religious dialogue; the geographical shift of the center of Catholicism; the scientific-technological revolution; the reality of the poor; and the emerging crisis of global warming are among the most significant.

As the Catholic Church emerges as a truly global church, Catholic universities have an essential role to play in its mission in the …

After Utopia: Three Post-Personal Subjects Consider The Possibilities, Jeffrey P. Cain Jan 2009

After Utopia: Three Post-Personal Subjects Consider The Possibilities, Jeffrey P. Cain

English Faculty Publications

Review essay.

The task for those exploring the relationship of Deleuze to cultural issues is not to extend his thought in a straight line, but to swerve or veer into thinking a productive approach to the cultural events that actualise themselves in our time. Cain states that the virtue of these three books is that they do not simply go back to the same old questions; all of them represent departures in thinking in the best sense of the word.

Blood Culture And The Problem Of Decadence, Jeffrey P. Cain Jan 2009

Blood Culture And The Problem Of Decadence, Jeffrey P. Cain

English Faculty Publications

This paper examines the commodification of hunting practices via the deterritorializing function of capitalism described by Deleuze and Guattari. It also studies counter trends-- predicted by or consistent with Deleuzean theory--that indicate a subtending authenticity displayed by certain hunting practices apparently resistant to commercial exploitation. "Blood culture" is my term for inauthentic hunting activity--a distinction drawn directly by Deleuze in his televised interviews with Claire Parnet. Aspects of "becoming-animal" and other transversal and cross-disciplinary flows of thought are also of course in play. As in some of my former work, I again argue for a Deleuzean cultural mechanics of the …

Religion, Rhetoric, And Running For Office: Public Reason On The Us Campaign Trail, Brian Stiltner, Steven Michels Jan 2009

Religion, Rhetoric, And Running For Office: Public Reason On The Us Campaign Trail, Brian Stiltner, Steven Michels

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

It is common, almost expected, for candidates for office in the United States to affirm their religious identity and to employ broad religious themes in support of their political agendas. It is the rare candidate, especially for the Senate or the presidency, who completely eschews religious language due to the pressure and scrutiny of church leaders and advocacy groups with religous and moral agendas.

The Priestly Imagination: Thomas Merton And The Poetics Of Critique, Michael W. Higgins Jan 2009

The Priestly Imagination: Thomas Merton And The Poetics Of Critique, Michael W. Higgins

Mission Integration & Ministry Publications

The article looks at the representation of ideals of the poet-priest in the works of Thomas Merton. It provides an analysis of Merton's poetics of critique. For Merton, John the Baptist represents the model anchorite as well as the first Cisterician and the greatest Trappist. The indivisible and comprehensive dimensions of Merton as a whole man are represented by John the Baptist, John of the Cross and John the Beloved. The two types of Merton's poetics of critique are ecclesial/monastic and societal.
