Two Problems In The Philosophy Of Mind, C.J. Summers '96

The philosophy of mind has historically been concerned to a large part with two central phenomenon of human experience. Not only do we receive and process information, we seem to be aware of the experiences which constitute our input and are cognizant and in control of many of the processes which are performed upon this information. Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, an African-American school of agriculture, teacher training and vocational trades in Tuskegee, Alabama, was at one point the world's most respected school of its kind. This superior reputation was the work of Booker T. Washington, a man who rose up from slavery to help establish the school in 1881 and served as its principal until he died in 1915. Known as "The Founder," Washington used the support of rich and influential whites to develop a major center of practical education; over time, he also created a massive web of patronage and power which he used …

I find reading a hypertext akin to finding shapes in a cloud. One minute, the cloud clearly looks like two people in a row boat, then the wind blows and the cloud becomes a dinosaur. In a hypertext, just when an incipient shape presents itself in the text, then one clicks the mouse, and that meaning can completely change. In fact, unlike a cloudy sky, in which the context of the clouds, the sky, remains the same, the whole context of the text can change. Trying to analyze a particular hypertext, then, could be likened to trying to convince a …
