The Humanities are under represented in the Institutional Repository. The capstone projects generally are kept in house and are not available online. The humanities incorporates unique concerns including plagiarism and the ability to publish the work in the future.
The English Department's capstone projects are created and stored and archives with in Special Collections.
These students' works can only be accessed on campus in the University Archives Reading Room. Using the Institutional Repository, we will create an opportunity for English majors to share their works publicly if they desire and can help them understand and navigate copyright concerns.

This presentation will discuss how Chris has utilized open source DocFetcher software and digitized materials from Hathi Trust and the Internet Archive to research a book on Illinois bicycle history. This paper tells the story of the birth and growth of the collection of Islamic manuscripts at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA). While the story has interest in its own right, this paper will also attempt to situate it in the larger story of the collecting of antiquities by Orientalists that began in Europe, first by wealthy dilettantes and royalty, then by museums as they began to grow and be established in the nineteenth century, and continued along similar lines in the young United States by wealthy industrialists and the museums and universities they patronized. Bicycle messenger boys often conjure up images of young boy riding an early morning newspaper delivery route. Long before the newspaper delivery boy, telegraph and shipping companies exploited child bicycle messengers as a cheap form of labor. Bicycle messenger boys worked long hours under dangerous conditions for little pay. Some worked overnight delivering messages and parcels to patrons and proprietors in red light districts. Some were injured or even killed on the job. This presentation will examine how bicycle messenger boys found themselves entwined in evolving American labor laws from 1890-1940. New Orleans has always been a city filled with a mix of cultures, creating a vibrant art community and subsequent detailed visual historical record throughout its 300 year history. This program will explore, from the French and Spanish influences to Mardi Gras and Hurricane Katrina, from well-known and less-known artists, how New Orleans was and is represented through images. In this program we will rediscover New Orleans, exploring how images have contributed to the formation of New Orleans’ image and informed our own conception of the city and its place in the South.

Feminism has faced criticism since its inception. However, if you believe in advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equity, then there should be no concern. Nonetheless, the feminist movement one could make the argument the movement failed women because the narrative benefits only some women. Thus, there is strong need for intersectional feminism calling for more inclusion.  Intersectional feminism no longer have to choose between issues related to sex. The earliest call for this action was Sojourner Truth’s rebuke Ain’t I a Woman. This call for action is even more present as women’s issues are still inequitable. …

Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. The American Jewish Immigration Collection is an archival collection of over 300 items, mostly correspondence, with reports of various kinds, some pamphlets, articles or essays, mainly from the archives of Louis Levy and Joseph Erhlich. Louis Levy and Joseph Erhlich were very active in organizations established to assist Jewish immigrants. The bulk of the collection dates from 1888-1918, which were peak years of Russian Jewish immigration. Much of the collection relates to the work of, or supported by, the Baron de Hirsch fund. Building on recently published research, an academic librarian and art professor facilitate the design and creation of visual and text pieces that illustrate information literacy terms’ meanings. This informational campaign uses data from a large-scale assessment of student comprehension of terms used in library instruction and syllabi. It offers an innovative way to teach students the language they need to be effective researchers, while detailing a library-art department collaboration that gives students a real-world learning experience.

There has been a recent trend for Universities to deliver more instruction in a fully online format both for convenience and cost-effectiveness. Many graduate students in music education are full-time teachers and do not have the time in their schedule to attend classes on campus, so this form of instruction is attractive to many in our profession. This paper discusses the life and legacy of Edward Elbridge Salisbury (1814-1901), focusing on his role as a founding member of the American Oriental Society-in particular his editorial and material support of the JAOS, and how this raised the international profile of American scholarship in Oriental studies.

In August 1841 the Yale Corporation appointed Salisbury as professor of Arabic and Sanskrit languages and literature, the first such position in the Americas. A year later, on September 7, 1842, "a few gentlemen interested in Oriental literature" founded the American Oriental Society in Boston and--given the significance of his academic appointment--elected …

The focus of this workshop is the often overlooked day-to-day wearing down of people in oppressed groups as recipients of microaggressions. While most who are sympathetic to this problem know what a microaggression is, faculty, staff and students tend to fear addressing such aggressions. They simply may not know how to do so effectively. In this hands-on workshop participants will grapple with specific scenarios and be invited to try out different communicative responses and other tools to work toward creating a more inclusive climate for all. In 1841 the Yale Corporation appointed alumnus Edward Elbridge Salisbury (class of 1832) as professor of Arabic and Sanskrit languages and literature, the first such position in the Americas.

This exhibit marks the 175th anniversary of his appointment. It introduces visitors to Salisbury’s scholarly development, his career at Yale and after, his benefactions (including two endowed chairs), and the growth of Yale collections of Islamic manuscripts after Salisbury’s death in 1901.

Salisbury was among the earliest members of the American Oriental Society (founded 1842), and energetically supported both the organization and its journal. His most famous student, William Dwight Whitney, …

Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.

The discussion will be accompanied by a bibliography of relevant secondary readings for instructors, lists of public domain primary sources for students, websites where these can be obtained, lists of Illinois historical sites connected to these materials, and suggestions as to how to interpret these sites for students.
