Using The Institutional Repository To Support And Promote The Humanities, Kayla Siddell, Mary George

Mary George

The Humanities are under represented in the Institutional Repository. The capstone projects generally are kept in house and are not available online. The humanities incorporates unique concerns including plagiarism and the ability to publish the work in the future.
The English Department's capstone projects are created and stored and archives with in Special Collections.
These students' works can only be accessed on campus in the University Archives Reading Room. Using the Institutional Repository, we will create an opportunity for English majors to share their works publicly if they desire and can help them understand and navigate copyright concerns.

Melcom 2018: Oriental Manuscripts At The University Of Michigan (Slides), Roberta L. Dougherty

Roberta L. Dougherty

This paper tells the story of the birth and growth of the collection of Islamic manuscripts at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA). While the story has interest in its own right, this paper will also attempt to situate it in the larger story of the collecting of antiquities by Orientalists that began in Europe, first by wealthy dilettantes and royalty, then by museums as they began to grow and be established in the nineteenth century, and continued along similar lines in the young United States by wealthy industrialists and the museums and universities they patronized. Also having a …

Bicycle Messenger Boys And The Evolution Of American Labor Laws, Christopher A. Sweet Jun 2018

Bicycle Messenger Boys And The Evolution Of American Labor Laws, Christopher A. Sweet

Christopher A. Sweet

Bicycle messenger boys often conjure up images of young boy riding an early morning newspaper delivery route. Long before the newspaper delivery boy, telegraph and shipping companies exploited child bicycle messengers as a cheap form of labor. Bicycle messenger boys worked long hours under dangerous conditions for little pay. Some worked overnight delivering messages and parcels to patrons and proprietors in red light districts. Some were injured or even killed on the job. This presentation will examine how bicycle messenger boys found themselves entwined in evolving American labor laws from 1890-1940. Anti-child labor organizations such as the National Child Labor …

We Should All Be Feminist.Pptx, Lynell Hodge Sep 2017

We Should All Be Feminist.Pptx, Lynell Hodge

Lynell Hodge, EdD

Feminism has faced criticism since its inception. However, if you believe in advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equity, then there should be no concern. Nonetheless, the feminist movement one could make the argument the movement failed women because the narrative benefits only some women. Thus, there is strong need for intersectional feminism calling for more inclusion.  Intersectional feminism no longer have to choose between issues related to sex. The earliest call for this action was Sojourner Truth’s rebuke Ain’t I a Woman. This call for action is even more present as women’s issues are still inequitable. …

Research As Inquiry, Social Justice, And The Particularist Challenges Of Religious Traditions In An Age Of Terror And Hate Jun 2017

Research As Inquiry, Social Justice, And The Particularist Challenges Of Religious Traditions In An Age Of Terror And Hate

Desirae Zingarelli-Sweet

Although the term “social justice” itself is commonly attributed to a 19th century Catholic theologian, the concept of social justice and imperatives to work toward its realization are integral to virtually all religious and spiritual traditions. Religious traditions have historically shaped institutions and power relationships in profound ways and continue to do so alongside the rise of the “nones” (those with no religious affiliation). Moreover, the complex interplay between religious and other cultural, racial, ethnic, lingual, political, and economic forces render a critical social analysis that leaves out religious factors woefully incomplete. Engaging these traditions, then, is essential for critically …

The Effectiveness Of An Online Mmed Degree: Perceptions Of Recent Graduates, David W. Snyder

David W. Snyder

There has been a recent trend for Universities to deliver more instruction in a fully online format both for convenience and cost-effectiveness. Many graduate students in music education are full-time teachers and do not have the time in their schedule to attend classes on campus, so this form of instruction is attractive to many in our profession. Illinois State University has recently instituted a fully online option for the Master of Music Education degree.  This poster summarizes the changes made to the curriculum and course delivery to become fully online and shares survey results of those who have participated in the program. …

Aos 2017: Edward Elbridge Salisbury And The Aos (Slides), Roberta L Dougherty Mar 2017

Aos 2017: Edward Elbridge Salisbury And The Aos (Slides), Roberta L Dougherty

Roberta L. Dougherty

This paper discusses the life and legacy of Edward Elbridge Salisbury (1814-1901), focusing on his role as a founding member of the American Oriental Society-in particular his editorial and material support of the JAOS, and how this raised the international profile of American scholarship in Oriental studies.

In August 1841 the Yale Corporation appointed Salisbury as professor of Arabic and Sanskrit languages and literature, the first such position in the Americas. A year later, on September 7, 1842, "a few gentlemen interested in Oriental literature" founded the American Oriental Society in Boston and--given the significance of his academic appointment--elected …

Addressing Microaggressions: Transgressing The Line Between Professional And Social Activism, Karla Scott, Victoria Defrancisco, Maureen Ebben Oct 2016

Addressing Microaggressions: Transgressing The Line Between Professional And Social Activism, Karla Scott, Victoria Defrancisco, Maureen Ebben

Maureen Ebben

The focus of this workshop is the often overlooked day-to-day wearing down of people in oppressed groups as recipients of microaggressions. While most who are sympathetic to this problem know what a microaggression is, faculty, staff and students tend to fear addressing such aggressions. They simply may not know how to do so effectively. In this hands-on workshop participants will grapple with specific scenarios and be invited to try out different communicative responses and other tools to work toward creating a more inclusive climate for all. The workshop comes from an intersectional feminist perspective, shinning a light on oppressive behaviors …

Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr. Jul 2016

Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.

Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.
