Clusterprompt: Cluster Semantic Enhanced Prompt Learning For New Intent Discovery, Jinggui Liang, Lizi Liao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The discovery of new intent categories from user utterances is a crucial task in expanding agent skills. The key lies in how to efficiently solicit semantic evidence from utterances and properly transfer knowledge from existing intents to new intents. However, previous methods laid too much emphasis on relations among utterances or clusters for transfer learning, while paying less attention to the usage of semantics. As a result, these methods suffer from in-domain over-fitting and often generate meaningless new intent clusters due to data distortion. In this paper, we present a novel approach called Cluster Semantic Enhanced Prompt Learning (CsePL) for …

Leveraging Generative Agents: Autonomous Ai With Simulated Personas For Interactive Simulacra And Collaborative Research, James Hutson, Jay Ratican Dec 2023

Leveraging Generative Agents: Autonomous Ai With Simulated Personas For Interactive Simulacra And Collaborative Research, James Hutson, Jay Ratican

Faculty Scholarship

The advent of large language models (LLMs) and AI learning have fundamentally reshaped the research landscape, paving the way for novel problem-solving approaches. This paper introduces a unique framework that leverages the capabilities of autonomous AI agents with simulated personas to drive collaborative research in groundbreaking ways. Inspired by a recent study of autonomous agents mirroring human behavior, this concept encourages the use of a cadre of AI agents, each possessing specialized expertise for collective endeavors. By replicating human diversity in teamwork, this approach targets complex and hitherto unsolvable issues. The key to this strategy is persona and emotional simulation, …

Prompting And Evaluating Large Language Models For Proactive Dialogues: Clarification, Target-Guided, And Non-Collaboration, Yang Deng, Lizi Liao, Liang Chen, Hongru Wang, Wenqiang Lei, Tat-Seng Chua Dec 2023

Prompting And Evaluating Large Language Models For Proactive Dialogues: Clarification, Target-Guided, And Non-Collaboration, Yang Deng, Lizi Liao, Liang Chen, Hongru Wang, Wenqiang Lei, Tat-Seng Chua

Conversational systems based on Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, show exceptional proficiency in context understanding and response generation. However, they still possess limitations, such as failing to ask clarifying questions to ambiguous queries or refuse users’ unreasonable requests, both of which are considered as key aspects of a conversational agent’s proactivity. This raises the question of whether LLM-based conversational systems are equipped to handle proactive dialogue problems. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of LLM-based conversational systems, specifically focusing on three key aspects of proactive dialogues: clarification, target-guided, and non-collaborative dialogues. To trigger the proactivity of …

UNLABELLED: The rapid progress in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing has led to increasingly sophisticated large language models (LLMs) for use in healthcare. This study assesses the performance of two LLMs, the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models, in passing the MIR medical examination for access to medical specialist training in Spain. Our objectives included gauging the model's overall performance, analyzing discrepancies across different medical specialties, discerning between theoretical and practical questions, estimating error proportions, and assessing the hypothetical severity of errors committed by a physician.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied the 2022 Spanish MIR examination results after excluding …

Stack Overflow, the world's largest software Q&A (SQA) website, is facing a significant traffic drop due to the emergence of generative AI techniques. ChatGPT is banned by Stack Overflow after only 6 days from its release. The main reason provided by the official Stack Overflow is that the answers generated by ChatGPT are of low quality. To verify this, we conduct a comparative evaluation of human-written and ChatGPT-generated answers. Our methodology employs both automatic comparison and a manual study. Our results suggest that human-written and ChatGPT-generated answers are semantically similar, however, human-written answers outperform ChatGPT-generated ones consistently across multiple aspects, …

Ai-Supported Academic Advising: Exploring Chatgpt’S Current State And Future Potential Toward Student Empowerment, Daisuke Akiba, Michelle C. Fraboni Aug 2023

Ai-Supported Academic Advising: Exploring Chatgpt’S Current State And Future Potential Toward Student Empowerment, Daisuke Akiba, Michelle C. Fraboni

Publications and Research

Artificial intelligence (AI), once a phenomenon primarily in the world of science fiction, has evolved rapidly in recent years, steadily infiltrating into our daily lives. ChatGPT, a freely accessible AI-powered large language model designed to generate human-like text responses to users, has been utilized in several areas, such as the healthcare industry, to facilitate interactive dissemination of information and decision-making. Academic advising has been essential in promoting success among university students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Unfortunately, however, student advising has been marred with problems, with the availability and accessibility of adequate advising being among the hurdles. The current study …

Probing As A Technique To Understand Abstract Spaces, Ashlen A. Plasek Jun 2023

Probing As A Technique To Understand Abstract Spaces, Ashlen A. Plasek

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Machine learning models, while very powerful, have their operation obfuscated behind millions of parameters. This obfuscation can make deriving a human meaningful process from a machine learning model very difficult. However, while the intermediate states of a machine learning model are similarly obfuscated, using probing, we can start to explore looking at possible structure in those intermediate states. Large language models are a prime example of this obfuscation, and probing can begin to allow novel experimentation to be performed.
