Chromaticity, Whitney Anne Hagen
Chromaticity, Whitney Anne Hagen
Senior Projects Spring 2023
Chromaticity is an objective specification of the quality of a color regardless of its luminance consisting of two independent parameters. These are often specified as hue and colorfulness, where the latter is alternatively called saturation, chroma, intensity, or excitation purity. These parameters follow how the human eye perceives color, giving us visual cues when navigating the world. In abstract art, where form is not bound by the constraints of representation, color becomes the primary tool for communication. Creating harmony, tension, emotion, and balance, the color relationships in this collection of work communicates to the viewer in a visual language that …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My work tries to perplex the viewer to acknowledge themselves in the act of seeing. In order to perplex them, I use ambiguous reference to figure and space using multiple perspectives, vantage points, gaze, marks, mediums, and, more recently, light and site specificity to establish liminal relationships and experiences. Liminality is a kind of in-betweenness, being on the threshold of places or states of being. My experiences in and studies of the Jewish Diaspora have been my path towards understanding liminality, but liminality is not unique to diaspora or to the Jewish experience and my work does not attempt to …
As The Sun Yellows The Green Of The Maple Tree, Adam Fulwiler
As The Sun Yellows The Green Of The Maple Tree, Adam Fulwiler
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the Sun Yellows the Green of the Maple Tree is a body of paintings investigating communication, improvisation, play, and painting’s capacity for transformation.
Reflecting on my childhood spent with my brother, Austin, who experiences sensory differences due to autism, I establish a painted space that is both forcibly disjointed and meaningfully connected, invoking the uncertainty and complexity of perception and communication. Through chromatic nuance, physicality, representational ambiguity, and visual tempo, I invite the viewer into the act of slow looking—to encounter each work as a living, breathing, individual entity.
In the studio, I invent rules and aleatoric devices, mimicking …
My Perception Of Reality Expressed Through The Arts, Amanda Dunker
My Perception Of Reality Expressed Through The Arts, Amanda Dunker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis project will focus on the symbolism and artistic interpretation of how I perceive reality. This thesis project uses all artistic skills that I have acquired throughout my lifetime and combines them into one mixed digital media video. This is a mix between the two digital media formats 2D and 3D. Each animation and segment syncs with the music selected manually or technically. The process of creation for each segment and explaining which software I choose to use for each task. It also dives a little further, noting the artistic decisions and why. The symbolism used within the art …

Common Thread, Isobella Rose Grubb-Kovach
Senior Projects Spring 2022
We are nature, and nature is everything. Our bodies reflect the patterns found in nature—our veins and cells mimic lichen and mold, roots, water, vines.
Painting does not require a message. It is independent of me, the artist; it stands on its own, a child made by my hand. It is sent out into the world alone, unaccompanied by my touch or comment, its only task to procure a visual experience, a collaboration between geometry and gesture, for those whose eyes rest upon it.
The mind is drawn to nature; we are endowed with the ability to connect our selves …

Interrogating The Light Bugs, Ana C. Villagomez
Theses and Dissertations
My paintings engage with ideas of time, memory and displacement. Intricately painted works appear to cover other layers of information hidden underneath through the act of rubbing, masking and erasing with unconventional tools such as scour pads, toilet brushes and rags, creating a surface that resembles a complex topographical map. But unlike a traditional cartographer, I seek to map my inner world.

Waiting To Be Seen, Sarah L. Napp
Student Projects
Personal knowledge through constant introspection is the cornerstone of "Waiting To Be Seen". Through this series of paintings, I became aware of the depth of the shape of my thinking as a result of accepting my vulnerabilities.
Tomtom Oracle, Grant B. Wells
Tomtom Oracle, Grant B. Wells
Theses and Dissertations
TomTom Oracle explores the conceptual and material processes throughout my body of work as an expression of a psychological tethering to a digital visual experience that removes us from the physical world.

2020 Symposium Creative Works
Created using instant film, this piece was taken apart and destroyed before a new image was formed. Looking at the image from the back and scraping and sanding at the layers of chemicals was an attempt at finding some remnant of the original image. It is delving into the idea of the importance of content within an image and explores the resurrection of an image in a new way.

Over Certain Undecidedness These Heartstring Intimations, Martha Hemingway
Over Certain Undecidedness These Heartstring Intimations, Martha Hemingway
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
over certain undecidedness these heartstring intimations is the culmination of a two-year-long abstracted cycle of textured conversation, internal eye contact, and endless playlist-making. Hemingway’s work is based in process-oriented reflections on habitual behavior, manifestation of sentiment, and sense of self. Her paintings draw inspiration from the ways in which we approach and avoid our internal and external routines – how degrees of our subconscious considerations affect how we extend ourselves to others. Individual auditory preferences of different colliding souls have carved a space for her in a language of empathetic abstraction – attempting to elaborate the curious beauty and pain …

A Shift In Silence, Bailey Idom
A Shift In Silence, Bailey Idom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Shift in Silence is a body of work that emerged because of a key shift in my life. Using the formal components of line, shape, and value, I create a space representing an intimate moment in time. Physically, the medium can be any material, but I process all of this as an expression of line. Each piece shares the commonality of lines and lineage, while the layering embodies the record of my relationships from the past that directly affect the present. The abstraction and unpredictability within my own relationships require openness and vulnerability. This honest dialogue sustains and informs …

Hidden Wku: Abstract Photography As A Tool For Discovery, Logan Houchens
Hidden Wku: Abstract Photography As A Tool For Discovery, Logan Houchens
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
As Western Kentucky University has become a larger and more professional international school, its outward appearances have been polished to be more attractive. This creative research project focuses on appreciating the stark contrasts, visual characteristics, and beautifully authentic areas of campus that have persisted through this systematic cleaning. The result is a “reverse showcase” of the university, which aims to appreciate what is not normally considered to be attractive or worthy of attention. This project was created through the medium of abstract photography resulting in a collection of images that focus on unusual textures, colors, and shapes. These images will …

Senior Projects Spring 2017
This show XXVII is truly a testament to the changes I have made through these last four years. My art from a few years ago was unsure of its identity and style. When I started using a technique of staining and liquid paint I felt as though I was more articulate through my art. I had found my language and my words. The large gestures like phrases and the smaller marks and the staccato of the sprays of paint were like a reply.
In my artwork there is a strong emphasis on process and spontaneity. While I learned to understand …
It Could Have Been Great: An Examination Of Kandinsky's Bauhaus Paintings And The Great Synthesis Of The Arts, Deanna Brooks
It Could Have Been Great: An Examination Of Kandinsky's Bauhaus Paintings And The Great Synthesis Of The Arts, Deanna Brooks
Institute for the Humanities Theses
When Nazism descended upon the German art world in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, artists were treated as an expendable group of "political undesirables." Among them was Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who experienced firsthand the political pressure placed on his career, as he attempted to visualize a weltanschauung or "world view," that involved the marriage of different types of art, media, and practices. For Kandinsky the "Great Synthesis of the Arts" revealed the collective historical narrative, to which all artists contributed, and he strove to actualize this lifelong goal over the course of his teaching career at …

Mapped: Intersections Of Cartography And Painting, Brian Robert Neils Strigel
Mapped: Intersections Of Cartography And Painting, Brian Robert Neils Strigel
Senior Projects Spring 2016
Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.
Mapped: Intersections of Cartography and Painting explores the role of representation in art and how we, as people, communicate through visual language. More fundamentally, my paintings ask at what point does an abstract painting become a map, and what structures and conventions do we use in cartography that appear in abstract painting? Is a map a painting or is it a functional object? The map is a fundamentally flat, abstract object to which we assign practical meaning. Details are only considered if they are necessary for travel or displaying …

Veils: Truth In Translation, Katherine M. Block
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This supporting document for the thesis exhibition entitled “Veils: Truth in Translation” will discuss Block’s exploration of painting during her time at East Tennessee State University. The supporting document also provides the historical background and influences which have contributed to Block's overall process and techniques. These influences include the Abstract Expressionists, Carl Jung, Ferdinand de Saussure, John Dewey, Theodor Adorno, Joan Mitchell and Gerhard Richter. In the supporting document Block probes the idea that non-objective painting is more than a language confined by linguistic elements of sign, signifier, and signified, but is a process of thinking, which is communicated on …
