Planning For Student Veteran And Military Member Support Programs At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Daniel D. Moseman
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) has recognized the importance of its student veteran and military member population and is undertaking a planning process to develop or improve its student veteran programs. The goal of this professional project is to present UNL with options and alternatives that could be used to develop these student veteran programs. The research associated with this project is timely and prudent, given the current reduction in military force size and the anticipated return of many thousand service members into post-secondary education.
This professional project provides information on three topics. First, research from credible sources determines the …

Skateboarding As Transportation: Findings From An Exploratory Study, Tessa Walker
Skateboarding As Transportation: Findings From An Exploratory Study, Tessa Walker
Dissertations and Theses
In recent decades skateboarding has expanded from recreation into a form of transportation. Skateboarders appear to use roadways much as other non‐motorized modes do. However, there is little academic research on the needs and characteristics of the skateboard as a mode. This research reports demographics, multi‐modal and travel behavior findings, and other data from an exploratory mixed‐methods study of skateboarding as a mode of transportation.
Effects Of Buildings And Environment In Our Everyday Life, Arlinda Sheqiri
Effects Of Buildings And Environment In Our Everyday Life, Arlinda Sheqiri

This article investigates effects of buildings and environment in our everyday life process. A building and its environment will determinate how people lives and how happy they will be. When it comes to a special type of buildings like Kindergarten, Schools this issue becomes even more delicate and complex. The complexity that those types of buildings bear to itself is really national responsibility and should take all attention not only by municipality, governance, politics, but even by society itself. This article will explore the effects of the buildings and environment on children’s well being, and education. Schooling has direct effects …

Symbolism And Poetics Of Autogenic Space And Structures – The New Design Approach On Mosque As Representative Building (Design Proposal For The Central Mosque Of Prishtina As Case Study), Banush Shyqeriu, Kushtrim Hajdari
UBT International Conference
The congregation Mosque, Masjid (from Arabic, sujúd = prostration to God) is one of the most important institutions of Muslim world, also the predominant built form of Muslim architecture. Having a basic spatial configuration to create “shelter” for prayer, it is evoking how the simple space bears meaning that generates symbolism. This paper tries to de-construct and re-construct the Mosque as a representative built form. By using our Design Proposal for the Central Mosque of Prishtina as Case Study, we emphasize an “organic” approach towards Mosque design through a methodology of integral contextualization and conception as the new “typology”, by …

An Anthropology Of Urbanism: How People Make Places (And What Designers And Planners Might Learn From It), Brooke D. Wortham-Galvin
Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations
In their word play on what design praxis might succeed the New Urbanism movement in the United States, the July 2013 article “Newest Urbanism” in the Architect introduced to the uninitiated the concept of tactical urbanism. Defining tactical urbanism as "temporary, cheap, and usually grassroots interventions—including so-called guerrilla gardens, pop-up parks, food carts, and 'open streets' projects—that are designed to improve city life on a block-by-block, street-by-street basis," the article claims that it took this approach to shaping the city less than a decade to mainstream into the practices of US cities and firms alike. While Architect used the term …

The Role Of The Environmental Manager In Advancing Environmental Sustainability And Social Responsibility In The Organization, Lisa Greenwood, Joseph Rosenbeck, Jason Scott
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
A changing business climate has led many organizations to embrace environmental sustainability and social responsibility; however, organizational roles and responsibilities in sustainability initiatives have not been clearly defined. This paper specifically examines the role of environmental managers in advancing environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It is part of a broader study to identify the extent to which various departments or functional units within an organization are prepared to play a role in these initiatives based on a survey of various professionals in relation to activities and action items derived from the ISO 26000 standard on social responsibility. As expected, the …

The Mayaarch3d Project: A 3d Webgis For Analyzing Ancient Architecture And Landscapes, Jennifer Von Schwerin, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Fabio Remondino, Giorgio Agugario, Gabrio Girardi
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
There is a need in the humanities for a 3D WebGIS with analytical tools that allow researchers to analyze 3D models linked to spatially referenced data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow for complex spatial analysis of 2.5D data. For example, they offer bird’s eye views of landscapes with extruded building footprints, but one cannot ‘get on the ground’ and interact with true 3D models from a pedestrian perspective. Meanwhile, 3D models and virtual environments visualize data in 3D space, but analytical tools are simple rotation or lighting effects. The MayaArch3D Project is developing a 3D WebGIS—called QueryArch3D—to allow these two …

Running On Fumes The Destabilization Of The World’S Interconnected Systems As A Result Of Unsustainable Human Proliferation On A Finite Planet, Eduardo Fradin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the global interconnectivity of critical and complex societal systems. Today, if consumption patterns continue to rise to unsustainable levels in concert with a soaring global population, these social and technological systems may begin to buckle, which will threaten the advancement of modern human civilization in the 21st century and beyond. The first globally-stressed system that is addressed in this paper is the global economic system. The second system I discuss is the global energy system and how it directly impacts the global economy. The following chapter looks at unsustainable population growth, freshwater scarcity, and food stresses. In …

Interior Design In The Realm Of Social Services: Housing The Homeless, Amanda Kaserman Leininger
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study plans to investigate the social issues of homelessness and the strategies for creating positive living environments that aim to enable inhabitants to re-enter society. Supported by statistical evidence, homelessness has been recognized as a growing issue in the United States that deserves serious attention and proper solutions. There are a wide range of reasons why people succumb to the undesirable status of homelessness. By exploring the circumstances, we will be able to gain a better understanding of the issues, which in turn can help formulate supportive programs and inform environmental design solutions to accommodate their needs. Currently …
Unemployment And Marital Quality In Single- And Two-Earner Marriages, Andrew M. Bland
Unemployment And Marital Quality In Single- And Two-Earner Marriages, Andrew M. Bland
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A need was recognized for a broad-based quantitative study on the impact of unemployment upon marital relationship quality in light of recent societal changes and the current economic climate. Recently, researchers have suggested that unemployment is less severe in partnerships that reflect progressive shifts in values and expectations within marital relationships. It was worth exploring whether this claim generalized across a broader sample of contemporary marriages, including those that uphold more traditional values. An ex post facto correlational design was used to assess how unemployment impacts marital quality in single breadwinner vs. dual-earner couples in the current economy. Participants were …
Factors Influencing Family Medicine Residents’ Screening For Intimate Partner Violence, Melissa Bruder
Factors Influencing Family Medicine Residents’ Screening For Intimate Partner Violence, Melissa Bruder
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence among adolescents is a serious and widespread problem. It is apparent that victims of intimate partner violence experience physical and psychological consequences. These adverse health effects can result in adolescents seeking care from healthcare professionals. However, intimate partner violence victims do not always receive the care and response they need. Because adolescents are reporting that not all healthcare professionals are screening for intimate partner violence, one must come to understand the factors that are hindering this occurrence. Although previous research has provided a foundation for understanding factors that influence intimate partner violence screening, researchers have not specifically …

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013
Under the Supervision of Professor Anne Bonds
A 1994 Fannie Mae report on poverty in America identified 20 census tracts in the city of Milwaukee that had the third fastest rate of growth in poverty in the nation, behind only areas in Detroit and Los Angeles. This prompted The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) to initiate a redevelopment program that came to be known as Lindsay Heights. This study will ascertain what the impetus was …
Transit-Oriented Development: An Alternative To Sprawl, Troy Patrick Gardner
Transit-Oriented Development: An Alternative To Sprawl, Troy Patrick Gardner
Masters Theses
Transportation modes have historically influenced forms of growth. The personal automobile has perhaps had the most impact, producing a form of development known as sprawl. This unplanned form of development has become a predominate pattern of growth in many parts of America, which has brought about a number of social, economic, and environmental challenges. In addition to these challenges, sprawl often produces amebic forms without clearly defined centers. Instead, sprawl typically consists of low-density development, single-use zoning, and wide roads. This creates an environment that is almost exclusively designed for vehicles and dangerous for pedestrians. Because sprawl usually lacks an …
Interactions Between The Urban Environment And “The Homelessness”: Observations And Responses, Jeffrey Charles Stahl
Interactions Between The Urban Environment And “The Homelessness”: Observations And Responses, Jeffrey Charles Stahl
Masters Theses
Homelessness and people living on the streets is a phenomenon that is facing every major urban center in the United States. These people are a commonality in the urban landscape and are often seen a problem to be fi xed. Due to the interactions between the urban environment and persons experiencing homelessness, there needs to be a paradigm shift in how policy is written and how we design an intervention for these forgotten people. The goal of this thesis is to gain a clearer understanding to what it is like to survive on the streets: how dose someone fi nd …

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert
Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Social justice movements organize against contemporary conditions of oppression and domination. Today’s movements often target neoliberalism as an agent of both economic and cultural marginalization, citing environmental degradation, increasing wealth disparities in the information/service economy, and destruction of community-based institutions in the name of capital accumulation. One such example is the right to the city, both an intellectual idea and organizing framework for social action. The right to the city utilizes a Marxist framework to argue that cities are part of capitalist processes of production and, thus, space can and must be a site of intervention in the service of …
Quantifying The Just Noticeable Difference Of Reverberation Time With Band-Limited Noise Centered Around 1000 Hz Using A Transformed Up-Down Adaptive Method, Matthew G. Blevins, Adam T. Buck, Zhao Peng, Lily M. Wang
Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
This study seeks to quantify the just noticeable difference (JND) of reverberation time (RT) using band-limited noise. ISO 3382-1 lists the JND of reverberation metrics at 5% based on work by Seraphim (1958). However, others have found the JND of RT to be higher from 6% to 39%. Many of these studies utilized band-limited stimuli, e.g. speech, music motifs and bandlimited noise. A previous study by the authors conducted on 30 subjects using white noise demonstrated a JND of RT at 22%. To further verify these results and investigate potential upward frequency masking, the present study was conducted following the …

Adopting Green Building Codes To Mitigate The Effects Of Climate Change And Improve Environmental Health Hazards For Public Housing Residents: A Case Study Of Environmental Justice And Climate Justice In Bridgeport Ct, Jane S. Williams
Honors Theses
There is a lack of environmental justice in the public housing sector in the United States today. Prejudice in public housing policy and environmental hazards over the last 20th century have disproportionately affected populations based on race, ethnicity, and income. As global climate change becomes a reality, we need to protect the most vulnerable populations from direct and indirect effects of extreme weather events such as hurricanes and heat waves. We can protect residents of public housing by strengthening their homes structurally using green building techniques. Buildings are a huge drain on our nation’s energy sector. If we use green …

The differentiation of shame and guilt is not widely discussed. The reason why some people feel shame while others feel guilt is also not universally understood. Various theories have examined cultural influences and how individuals attribute the outcome of various situations. This paper discusses past theories of the reasons behind shame and guilt and conducts a study that examines how social rank, or lack thereof, could affect a person’s emotional response. It was predicted that when the participants, consisting of college undergraduates and residents of a private community, are primed towards feelings of superordination or equality, via vignettes, they would …

A Study Of The Influence Of Women Clients On Residential Architectural Design Through The Work Of E. Fay Jones, Calli Verkamp
A Study Of The Influence Of Women Clients On Residential Architectural Design Through The Work Of E. Fay Jones, Calli Verkamp
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis aims to determine the influence of women clients on residential architectural design in the United States throughout the twentieth century. In the late nineteenth and twentieth century, waves of feminism and women’s rights movements pushed traditional views of men, women, family and relationships in America to change. At the same time, modernity brought about a shift in architectural thinking. Therefore, if architectural ideas about housing and the home and cultural ideas regarding gender roles and domesticity are directly related, these cultural changes would be present in housing designs of the period. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was known to …
Negotiating Neoliberalism: Community-Based Organizations And The Production Of Urban Place, Caroline S. Devany
Negotiating Neoliberalism: Community-Based Organizations And The Production Of Urban Place, Caroline S. Devany
Geography Honors Projects
Focusing on two community-based organizations’ roles in producing urban place, this thesis contributes to the “New Urban Politics” literature that explores the neoliberal governance of space. Synthesizing participant observation, informant interviews and ideas introduced in Henri Lefebvre’s Production of Space my thesis explores the possibility of aesthetic practices rooted in everyday life to create alternate subjectivities of people and place. While both organizations engage urban governance in ways that do not directly contest neoliberalization, they each affirm participants as agents in the production of urban place in ways that can destabilize the marketization of everyday life.
