Towards Urban Biodiversity: Simulating Design Parameters For Wildlife-Inclusive Green Infrastrcuture, Alisa Abdulghany, Baher Farahat May 2023

Towards Urban Biodiversity: Simulating Design Parameters For Wildlife-Inclusive Green Infrastrcuture, Alisa Abdulghany, Baher Farahat

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

As of 2021, more than half of the global population resides in urban areas. This resulted in an overwhelming footprint affecting species habitat areas leading to biodiversity loss. By definition, urban biodiversity is the diversity of living things within the urban realm. By providing chances for habitat as part of new developments, preserving on-site habitats, and attempting to connect with the local ecosystems, we can help promote biodiversity. Green infrastructure (GI), which includes all semi-natural areas in the urban context, can serve as a vessel for biodiversity. Therefore, the problem can be defined by the urban footprint that expands on …

Effect Of Elevated Temperatures On The Properties Of Concrete Containing Metakaolin, Ahmed F. Abdullah, Mohamed M. Rashwan Jan 2023

Effect Of Elevated Temperatures On The Properties Of Concrete Containing Metakaolin, Ahmed F. Abdullah, Mohamed M. Rashwan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The influence of elevated temperatures on the properties of concrete is significant for study on fire resistance as well as for identifying how isolated vessels, chimneys, and containers in nuclear reactors respond under service conditions. The present experimental investigation assesses the properties of concrete containing Metakaolin (MK) that has been exposed to elevated temperatures. For this purpose, seven concrete mixes were prepared, including one control mix, three mixes containing metakaolin (10, 15, and 20%) as a replacement by weight of cement. And three other mixes in the same proportions as a cement additive. After 28 days, the specimens exposed to …

Medicinal Plants’ Stress Factors: Effects On Metabolites And Novel Perspectives For Tolerance, Mayssaloune Ali Kanso, Mohamad Ali Hijazi, Maha Aboul Ela Prof., Abdalla El-Lakany Oct 2022

Medicinal Plants’ Stress Factors: Effects On Metabolites And Novel Perspectives For Tolerance, Mayssaloune Ali Kanso, Mohamad Ali Hijazi, Maha Aboul Ela Prof., Abdalla El-Lakany

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Medicinal plants are rich in secondary metabolites representing different chemical classes and synthesized by various biochemical pathways. However, these compounds are susceptible to potential herbal predators and to environmental influences. Several factors induce different biotic and abiotic stresses (drought, cold, salinity, heat) that lead to fluctuations in the biogenesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites by which plants react to overcome the threatening stress conditions. This contribution aims to give an overview of the various medicinal plant defense mechanisms against imminent threats and their impact on secondary metabolites profiles in the most effective medicinal plant species such as the levels of …

Online Permaculture Resources: An Evaluation Of A Selected Sample, Claire M. Luchkina Jan 2016

Online Permaculture Resources: An Evaluation Of A Selected Sample, Claire M. Luchkina

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

As a newly-emerging, sustainable approach to landscape management, permaculture seeks to integrate knowledge from several disciplines into a holistic system with emphasis on ecological and social responsibility. Online resources on permaculture appear to represent a promising direction in the movement by supplementing existing printed sources, serving to update and diversify existing content, and increasing access to permaculture information and praxis among the general public. This study evaluated a sample of online resources on permaculture using a framework of parameters reflecting website usability and content quality. Best practice for website usability, as well as diversity of information and applicability, was addressed. …
