The Adoption Of A Design Build Approach In Retrofit Projects – A Descriptive Case Study, Lloyd Scott

Conference papers

The delivery Design Build projects across the built environment in Ireland has begun to take significant shape. There are many examples of the traditional are moving towards more collaborative practices. There exists support for the integration of a design build project approach in the retrofit realm where designer, client and developer can work collaboratively. As with the regular design build process the intent behind this collaborative approach is to encourage those associated with the built environment to consider how retrofit design and construction can contribute positively to addressing elements of climate change and the design build process. The opportunity to …

Analyzing The Restoration Of The Oklahoma State Capitol From The Perspective Of The Design Build Process:A Descriptive Case Study, Lloyd Scott, J.E. Dunne

Conference papers

Design Build projects in the built environment are moving towards more collaborative practices. The intent behind this collaborative approach is to encourage those associated with the built environment to consider how retrofit design and construction can contribute positively to addressing elements of climate change and the design build process. The opportunity to share the rich nature of the design build process in a unique environmentally and heritage focused project excited the authors. Secondly concerns about the way such projects are captured historically, and specifically the disciplinary knowledge and skills employed in the restoration of such a significant landmark building could …

Learning Through Successful Digital Opportunities For Effective Competition Preparations:Reflections Of Students And Coaches, Lloyd Scott, Mark Shelbourn Apr 2018

Learning Through Successful Digital Opportunities For Effective Competition Preparations:Reflections Of Students And Coaches, Lloyd Scott, Mark Shelbourn

Conference papers

Education of the built environment is moving towards more collaborative practices. The intent behind the collaborative approach of teaching is to encourage students to explore the unknowns and unravel the problems themselves, with the professor acting as the facilitator. This paper presents a collaborative pedagogical approach that was adopted to teach students from two geographically distant universities. The occasion used was preparation of student teams for Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) student competitions. The participants began by engaging online in a virtual environment and later moved to face-to-face collaboration solving an interdisciplinary design build problem as part of the student …

James Joyce Run: Nothing Happens In The Public Houses, People Drink, Barry Sheehan Mar 2018

James Joyce Run: Nothing Happens In The Public Houses, People Drink, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

I write a blog www.jj21k.com which looks at the works of James Joyce, the environment which he wrote about and changes that have taken place since he wrote about them. The blog posts are predominantly about Dublin. As part of discovering Dublin by reading and running, I have written several longer pieces.

This piece creates a running narrative that runs past every pub that is mentioned in Ulysses that is still a pub.

You can see more background information and other posts on www.jj21k.com.

Designing Work: Collaboration Versus Concentration In Open Plan Workspaces?, John Walsh Mar 2018

Designing Work: Collaboration Versus Concentration In Open Plan Workspaces?, John Walsh

Level 3

This paper looks at the design of open-plan offices, particularly in relation to the impact of spatial design on different work-modes. It briefly examines the history of the open plan office, looking at how today’s typical open-plan workplace has evolved. It considers how workplaces can be successfully designed to facilitate the seemingly conflicting requirements of supporting both collaboration and concentration.

Places Of Faith: Architectures For Hospitality In The Italian Sanctuaries In The Early Modern Age, Silvia Beltramo Feb 2018

Places Of Faith: Architectures For Hospitality In The Italian Sanctuaries In The Early Modern Age, Silvia Beltramo

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The strong affluence of pilgrims in monasteries and sanctuaries since the Middle Era, determined a veritable culture of hospitality, which was manifested by the building of new spaces dedicated to guest quarters. This research investigates in detail some meaningful examples amongst the main Italian sanctuaries - namely: Vicoforte and Oropa (Piedmont), Tirano (Lombardy) and Loreto (Marche) - looking at the solutions adopted to host the wayfarers: the hospitality spaces which characterised architecture dedicated to pilgrims between the Middle and the Early Modern Ages. Throughout this period of time, the continuous increase in pilgrimages implied new definitions of the space within …

Alexa, turn on the hall lights.’ Words taken from a 2017 promotional video for the Amazon Echo —‘a disembodied voice’, and ‘interface for an extraordinarily complex set of information processing layers.’ ‘Alexa, do x’. The discounted toilet-roll is ordered or the house lights come on, but before they do, travelling at the speed of light, a small packet of data arrives at a banal warehouse in the middle of somewhere where needs, wants and desires are farmed in a repository of disembodied voices. From the mining of tantalum, used in the manufacturing of the Echo, from the geological strata of …

Investigating The State Of Play Of Geobim Across Europe, Claire Ellul, Jantien E. Stoter, Lars Harrie, M. Shariat, Avril Behan, Maria Pla Jan 2018

Investigating The State Of Play Of Geobim Across Europe, Claire Ellul, Jantien E. Stoter, Lars Harrie, M. Shariat, Avril Behan, Maria Pla

Conference papers

In both the Geographic Information (Geo) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) domains, it is widely acknowledged that the integration of data from both domains is beneficial and a crucial step in facing the multi-disciplinary challenges of our built environment. The result of this integration – which can broadly be termed GeoBIM – could answer questions such as identifying an appropriate Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system for a building based on room usage, outside air temperature, solar exposure and traffic pollution or validating whether a proposed built asset meets relevant planning constraints.

Developing a coherent approach to GeoBIM integration requires …

Design And Manufacture Of A Precast Pcm Enhanced Concrete Cladding Panel For Full Scale Performance Monitoring, Dervilla Niall, Roger West, Oliver Kinnane Jan 2018

Design And Manufacture Of A Precast Pcm Enhanced Concrete Cladding Panel For Full Scale Performance Monitoring, Dervilla Niall, Roger West, Oliver Kinnane

Conference papers

The overall aim of this study is to develop innovative precast cladding panels for the renovation of Europe’s existing building stock thereby improving their energy performance. Using the mass of a building to store heat and/or cold can reduce the demand on the auxiliary heating and/or cooling systems and hence reduce the overall energy demand of the building. Previous laboratory research has shown that the incorporation of phase change materials (PCMs) into concrete enhances its thermal storage capacity by up to 50%. However in a real application where a PCM-concrete composite material is used in a building to store thermal …

Could Autodesk Revit Be Automated For Code Compliance Checking And Demonstration With A Focus On Fire Safety Regulations?, Ross Harrell, Malachy Mathews

Reports

Often a subject to ambiguity and interpretation, building codes and compliance with them require years of expertise to understand and to integrate into good design. Automation of code compliance through Building Information Modelling (BIM) removes the human aspect from these processes and ensures building codes are correctly adhered to. In this paper, the author reviews current code compliance systems implemented internationally and, with a focus on fire codes, compares them to the current fire certificate application in The Republic of Ireland. By conducting interviews with an Executive Fire Prevention Officer of Dublin Fire Brigade and a Fire Consultant practicing in …

Demography Is Destiny: Strategic Planning And Housing In Ireland, Brian Hughes Jan 2018

Demography Is Destiny: Strategic Planning And Housing In Ireland, Brian Hughes

Articles

The approach to this demographic-based paper on housing comprises a demand-led perspective to spatial planning and housing provision. The principal arguments are that end-use demand is driven by demographic growth and that successful planning is predicated on sustainable market-led implementation. Accordingly, the thrust and direction of Ireland’s National Planning Framework (NPF) must be driven by rational responses to population projections, its growthdriver of job creation, and anticipating the primary locations of future employment and for city-led end-use demand. Since 2006 Ireland’s potential to invest in capital formation has been handicapped by state economic constraints. In the intervening decade its Fixed …
