Green Buildings: A Maltese Perspective, Kevin Muscat Dec 2010

Green Buildings: A Maltese Perspective, Kevin Muscat

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

As construction and building development increases in the local scene, and the threat of climate change escalates, addressing green buildings on the national agenda is of vital importance. The building sector has a significant potential to implement positive change and hence become more efficient in terms of resource use. The term ‘green’ has been widely used throughout the last few decades to denote environmentally friendly policies, principles and measures. The ever growing popularity of the term was brought about by increasing concerns and issues such as those pertaining to climate change, energy crisis and resource depletion. Central to this debate …

Designing For Future Building Adaptive Reuse Using Adaptstar, Sheila Conejos, Craig Langston Dec 2010

Designing For Future Building Adaptive Reuse Using Adaptstar, Sheila Conejos, Craig Langston

Sheila Conejos

Designing future buildings with embedded adaptive reuse potential is a useful criterion for sustainability. Adaptive reuse is an emerging and significant design strategy that supports global climate protection and emissions reduction. Building adaptive reuse is a viable alternative to demolition and replacement; it entails less energy and waste, and can offer social benefits by revitalizing familiar landmarks and giving them a new lease of life. This paper describes the development of a new rating tool known as adaptSTAR, suitable for assessing future adaptive reuse potential at the time a building is designed. This paper reports on the methodology used to …

Is Leed A True Leader? Studying The Effectiveness Of Leed Certification In Encouraging Green Building, Megan M. Turner Dec 2010

Is Leed A True Leader? Studying The Effectiveness Of Leed Certification In Encouraging Green Building, Megan M. Turner

Pomona Senior Theses

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) is the most commonly used green building rating system in the United States, bestowing upon LEED certified buildings the prestige of being considered more sustainable than their non-certified neighbors. The public often assumes that LEED certified buildings are completely sustainable or even net-zero with regards to greenhouse gas emissions, but in actuality buildings certified under the most popular version of LEED are only required to be 15% more energy efficient than required by most state building codes – a far cry from the energy usage cuts needed to stave off global warming. …

La Fiesta Quiteña, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Dec 2010

Calligraphy Tablets In The Forbidden City, Jianrong Wang

Bridgewater Review

The calligraphy tablets hung over each main gate and building in Beijing’s Forbidden City, although often neglected by visitors, actually are special embodiments of traditional Chinese concepts either well known or maybe unexpected by their readers. Besides explaining architectural functions, the tablets also can be read as means of decorating the architecture, conveying political ideals, advocating academic achievements, expressing good wishes and depicting charming sceneries.

Design Charts For Retaining Walls In Seismic Areas, Yingwei Wu, Shamsher Prakash Dec 2010

Design Charts For Retaining Walls In Seismic Areas, Yingwei Wu, Shamsher Prakash

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Retaining walls have failed either by sliding away from the backfill or due to combined action of sliding and rocking displacements, during earthquakes. Performance based design of the retaining walls in seismic areas must account for the likely displacements, in addition to calculating the usual factors of safety against failure in bearing, sliding and overturning. a realistic model for estimating dynamic displacement has been developed, which accounts for the combined action of sliding and rocking and takes into consideration, non-linear soil stiffness in sliding, and rocking, geometrical and material damping in sliding, and rocking, and coupling effects. This model was …

Evaluation Of Compacted Silt Characteristics By Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Testing, Desislava Z. Slavova, David M. Weidinger, Adam F. Sevi, Louis Ge

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Unintrusive measurement of field modulus and moisture content of roadway subgrade and fill materials greatly enhances field control during construction. Establishing a measurement method in a laboratory setting provides an initial assessment of a tool's possible usefulness in the field. an ultrasonic test system was used in this research in order to determine the wave velocities of cylindrical soil specimens in a laboratory setting in support of a Briaud Compactive Device (BCD) research project. the BCD is a non-destructive test method that can quickly determine soil modulus both in the laboratory and the field. Cylindrical soil samples of silt were …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles For Post Disaster Surveys, Thor Liland Larsen Dec 2010

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles For Post Disaster Surveys, Thor Liland Larsen

Master's Theses

In the current built environment, structures require regular observation and maintenance. Many of these structures can be quite challenging to evaluate. The required scaffolding, lifts, or similar access facilities can become quite costly to rent and construct, and can be a long term disturbance to those who use and manage the particular structure. Furthermore, there are situations where examination for the purpose of detailed analysis can be quite hazardous, if not entirely unsafe for humans. In a post-disaster environment traditional methods may not be safe or adequate for gaining access to parts of a structure that require observation or analysis. …

Nonlinear Modeling Of A Sustainable Material, Jorien Gill Baza Dec 2010

Nonlinear Modeling Of A Sustainable Material, Jorien Gill Baza

Master's Theses

This study developed a nonlinear constitutive model for a sustainable orthotropic material. Existing methods for constitutive models of wood were improved upon to include the nonlinear stress-strain response not only in the two orthogonal axes but at any orientation to the strong axis of the material. This method also simplifies the nonlinear stress-strain relationships into bilinear stress-strain curves which can be valuable in hand calculations as well as finite-element analyses. The effectiveness of the proposed constitutive model is demonstrated by comparing bilinear stress-strain predictions to experimental data.

I captured 16 Perimyotis subflavus on property owned by the Indianapolis International Airport, of those 16 animals I obtained roosting data on all 16 and foraging data on 11 individuals. The goal of this project was to see if a short broad winged bat’s foraging and roosting habits were affected by the fragmentation of habitat due to rapid urbanization. Using radio telemetry to find roosts and to create multi-azimuth triangulation I was able to create data points and place them onto a habitat map inside ArcGIS software. Sampling the size of woodlots available to the bats I was able to …

The Status Of Crawfish Frogs (Lithobates Areolatus) In Indiana, And A Tool To Assess Populations, Nathan J. Engbrecht

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The conservation status of Crawfish Frogs (Lithobates areolatus) in Indiana has changed over the past several decades. Once described as being locally plentiful, declines led to the listing of Crawfish Frogs as a State Endangered Species in 1988. Several records for this species in Indiana are > 50 yrs old and have gone unconfirmed for several decades. However, recent surveys have confirmed the continued presence of Crawfish Frogs in parts of southern Indiana, redefining the perceived range of this species in the state. In an effort to increase survey efficiency in this species, I used automated recording systems and manual call …
