Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell Nov 2007

Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell

City and Regional Planning

Local governments need innovative practices to address nonpoint source pollution, which has proven to be the Achilles heel of efforts to improve surface water quality in the United States. Studies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that 45% of assessed lakes and 39% of assessed rivers in the nation are polluted, and that agricultural and urban runoff were the primary sources of these problems (EPA, 2000, 2002). New approaches to address runoff are clearly necessary, and their success will depend on local government practices, yet we know little about how and why local governments innovate, particularly in response …

Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson Sep 2007

Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

This paper discusses the past design practices of flexible diaphragms, the current trend to very large diaphragms, and the new tools available to properly evaluate and engineer these large roof systems. Higher shear demands are accommodated by higher plywood/OSB and steel deck shear capacities accepted by the IBe. A new collective chord technique is presented to more accurately reflect large diaphragm behavior. In addition, these very large diaphragms have significant lateral deflection issues that can now be evaluated in the IBC. The new AF&PA deflection equations for wood diaphragms are presented as well as a technique to compute deflections of …

Educating The Ethical Practitioner, Marc J. Neveu Sep 2007

Educating The Ethical Practitioner, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

My talk today will be about my own thoughts regarding architecture education. My intention is not dictate a method for others to follow, but rather to open up a discussion of a topic that is central to many of us. I will begin with the findings of a study made by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching on architecture education known as the Boyer Report. I will then discuss the work of Donald Schön as it supports the report’s general conclusions. Though I see much merit in Schön’s proposals as well as the assessment made by the Boyer …

Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability - The History Behind Changes To Chapter 14 Of Aci 318, John Lawson Sep 2007

Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability - The History Behind Changes To Chapter 14 Of Aci 318, John Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Tilt-up construction is one of the most ubiquitous forms of commercial construction in many parts of the country. Thanks to its efficient wall and roof systems, more than 700 million ft2 (65 million m2) of tilt-up buildings were constructed in the U.S. in 2006.1
Tilt-up's current popularity is even more remarkable considering that it wasn't until the 1980s that building codes began to recognize the unique design of slender tilt-up wall panels. In fact, it wasn't until ACI 318-992 was published that the design of slender wall panels was codified on a national level. Of …

Evaluating Structural Form: Is It Sculpture, Architecture Or Structure?, Edmond P. Saliklis Jun 2007

Evaluating Structural Form: Is It Sculpture, Architecture Or Structure?, Edmond P. Saliklis

Architectural Engineering

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the idea of a continuum between sculpture form, architectural form and structural form. A linkage between the various forms will be proposed, and several scholarly views on this subject will be presented. Then, this paper will describe a brief web-based survey which tested people’s subjective categorization of various sculptural, architectural and structural forms. The target audience of the web-based survey was college students interested in building design and high school students. Finally, this paper will analyze whether or not presenting the respondents with the idea of a proposed continuum between such forms …

Tedesko’S Philadelphia Skating Club: Refinement Of An Idea, Edmond P. Saliklis, David P. Billington, Anneliza W. Carmalt Jun 2007

Tedesko’S Philadelphia Skating Club: Refinement Of An Idea, Edmond P. Saliklis, David P. Billington, Anneliza W. Carmalt

Architectural Engineering

This paper presents new aspects of Anton Tedesko’s design for an important thin shell concrete roof. The study of this roof results from the examination of original engineering drawings and calculations which we present with the goal of promoting a greater understanding of the structural design of a major figure in the tradition of 20th century building.

The World Changed Today: A Ten Year Reflection For A Climate Changing World, Paul Wack Apr 2007

The World Changed Today: A Ten Year Reflection For A Climate Changing World, Paul Wack

City and Regional Planning

In this article Paul Wack offers us a reflection on two of the most important issues for the planning profession: climate change and the public’s short attention span. He starts by addressing a 1895 poem depicting an optimistic view of the future which the late musician John Denver used to recite during his concerts, and in which Paul finds much inspiration for his classes. The article also ties into the next one, titled “Hot Topic”, dealing with the same theme and originally published in the APA’s Planning magazine.

A Call For Unified Design - Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability, John Lawson Jan 2007

A Call For Unified Design - Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability, John Lawson

Architectural Engineering

As one of the fastest-growing construction methods in the industry today, tilt-up construction, has witnessed a great deal of flux in its governing building codes.
