The pentagonal lintel common to Romanesque churches of the Auvergne region of France appears first in Carolingian church architecture. There are indications that, because pentagonal lintels result from the same sculptural technique used to produce sarcophagi lids from the Roman through the Ottonian periods, this peculiar lintel form may have been derived from a widespread quarry practice that facilitated its adoption as a regular architectural element. The pentagonal lintels of the Auvergne are characterized by three distinct lintel formats consisting of various combinations of plain, painted, or sculpted lintels and plain, ornamented, or sculpted tympana.
