The Potential Of Iconography As A Method In The Development Of A New Garden Identity, Mina Kaboudarahangi, Osman Mohd Tahir, Mustafa Kamal M.S
Mina Kaboudarahangi
Garden design has been described as a category of fine arts and, it has a long time interrelationship with the art of painting. Gardens can be defined as works of art due to their artistic values. Therefore, like other artifacts, they can be studied and recognized by their specific icons. Numerous famous historical gardens in the world are recognized through their individual icons. However, newly developing gardens do not yet posses any icons that represent them. Nevertheless, these new gardens should be developed, recognized and identified through their particular icons, to exhibit their exclusive identities. Hence, this paper will discuss …

Preferred Iconography In Developing Garden Identity For Malaysia, Mina Kaboudarahangi
Mina Kaboudarahangi
Malaysia has always been proud of her unique natural environment and cultural heritages, but still is searching for an exclusive identity of its own gardens. There is a great potential for development of a garden identity for the country, based on her rich legacy in traditions, cultures and beliefs, through which she could identify herself. The nation has a complex population composed of Malay, Chinese and Indian races. Hence, the icon, form, quality and appearance that are going to be introduced for Malaysian gardens should be appreciated, valued and respected by the Malaysian publics with diverse culture and preferences. This …

Review: Dairy Queens: The Politics Of Pastoral Architecture From Catherine De' Medici To Marie-Antoinette By Meredith Martin, Jean-François Bédard
Review: Dairy Queens: The Politics Of Pastoral Architecture From Catherine De' Medici To Marie-Antoinette By Meredith Martin, Jean-François Bédard
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
Bédard gives a review of Meredith Martin's Dairy Queens: The Politics of Pastoral Architecture from Catherine de' Medici to Marie-Antoinette (Harvard University Press, 2011). This book traces the history of the pleasure dairy, a feature of the pastoral movement in Europe from a feminist perspective. Martin study draws on the literature dealing with the role of the visual arts in the construction of female subjectivity in Modern France to make the case of the importance of pleasure dairies as sights of empowerment from French Noblewomen. Bédard states that Dairy Queens is a strong contribution to discussions of how architecture and …
"Else-Where": Essays In Art, Architecture, And Cultural Production 2002-2011, Gavin W. Keeney
"Else-Where": Essays In Art, Architecture, And Cultural Production 2002-2011, Gavin W. Keeney
Gavin W Keeney
“Else-where” is a synoptic survey of the representational values given to art, architecture, and cultural production from 2002 through 2011. Written primarily as a critique of what is suppressed in architecture and what is disclosed in art, the essays are informed by the passage out of post-structuralism and its disciplinary analogues toward the real Real (denoted over the course of the studies as the “Real-Irreal” or “Else-where”).
The essays collected in “Else-where” cross various disciplines, inclusive of landscape architecture, architecture, and visual art, to develop a nuanced critique of an emergent formal regard in the arts that is also an …

Malaysia is a developing country that has been experiencing rapid development since its independence in 1957. The country-with its unique natural and cultural heritage-is in need of projecting its own landscape identity through the development of a distinct national garden identity. This paper discusses a study that used Content Identifying Methodology to determine Malaysian public preferences among the iconographies of four selected well-established gardens, with the purpose of determining visual preferences of Malaysians for their own developing gardens. The results of the study found that plants, water, and traditional architectural features imbued with meaning were the preferred elements for a …
Greenlaw’S Suakin: The Limits Of Architectural Representation And The Continuing Lives Of Buildings In Coastal Sudan, Nancy Um
Art History Faculty Scholarship
Despite its ruined modern state, the coral-built architecture of the island city of Suakin on Sudan's Red Sea coast is well known to scholars of vernacular architecture. Its enduring reputation may be attributed to the copious documentation of its houses, mosques, and public buildings that appeared in the 1976 publication The Coral Buildings of Suakin by the artist Jean-Pierre Greenlaw. This paper considers the visual project of Greenlaw and its legacy, with a focus on the intertwined relationship between the processes of architectural documentation, the writing of architectural history, and the directives of preservation during the last years of British …

Review: Jules Hardouin-Mansart; Jules Hardouin-Mansart, 1646–1708; Bâtir Pour Le Roi: Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646–1708), Jean-François Bédard
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
In this review, Jean-François Bédard examines two book projects that look at Jules Hardouin-Mansart, who became First Architect to the King in 1681 and Superintendent of Works in 1699. His tenure was marked by a great flurry of activity and the generation of an immense quantity of documents. However, Hardouin-Mansart's professional and social success had a negative impact on the critical reception of his work. In fact many architectural historians doubted that he was behind many of the projects. The projects attempt to reevaluate Hardouin-Mansart's legacy as a designer. Bertrand Jestaz's two volume Jules Hardouin-Mansart is a greatly expanded and …

African Americans Perceptions Of The “N-Word” In The Context Of Racial Identity Attitudes, Keya Wiggins
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The “N-word” has been a pop-culture topic of interest which has fueled many heated discussions within the African American community. Given the history of the word nigger in America, the use of the word nigga among some African Americans may cause confusion among those who do not understand the phenomenon of African Americans‟ perceptions of the “N-word.” The present research was conducted to explore the phenomenon of African Americans‟ perceptions of both the words nigger and nigga in the context of racial identity attitudes. A primarily qualitative embedded mixed method model was utilized to gather information about feelings of group …
Inhabiting The Periphery: A Dialogue Between Individual And Site, Robert Oliver Kown
Inhabiting The Periphery: A Dialogue Between Individual And Site, Robert Oliver Kown
Masters Theses
What is a periphery? We can think about this word in more than one way. First off, peripheries are places that exist as spatial conditions in cities, They indicate edges and places that have been left behind. Spaces that have lost their meaning. But in this thesis I will use the word in another way as well. What does the periphery mean for us today? What are those parts of our lives that have been marginalized, and how can we begin to reclaim what has been lost? It is the aim of this thesis to address these issues of the …
The Life And Death Of An American Block: A Dialogue With Entropy, Micah Daniel Antanaitis
The Life And Death Of An American Block: A Dialogue With Entropy, Micah Daniel Antanaitis
Masters Theses
My goal in this thesis is to frame, through design, an existing environment in a manner that fosters the witness and embrace of the reality and beauty of decay—which acts as a marker of the passage of time. My intent is to engage in a careful renewal of a neglected, and largely forgotten, urban landscape, which does not ignore its temporal context. My hope is to explore the full potential of the life cycle of buildings and discover the lesson of mortality in modern American ruins.
Things fall apart. This is a simple truth about the physical world that humanity …
Wasted Land: Finding Redemption In A Post-Industrial Monument, Kristin Marie Karlinski
Wasted Land: Finding Redemption In A Post-Industrial Monument, Kristin Marie Karlinski
Masters Theses
This thesis is about the act of inhabiting the post-industrial landscape: about how a city with the remains of and scars from a previous era can begin to repurpose those remnants--both in a physical, as well as intangible sense. Proposing an alternative to the patterns of development that created such a landscape, it offers resistance to the entrenched values of privatization, commodification, and consumption.
The chosen site--an abandoned grain elevator in Buffalo, New York--sits at a nexus of converging landscapes: the grid of downtown to the north, a former industrial canal to the east, a stretch of barren waterfront land …

Many institutions are scrutinizing library space as a potential space bank in times of tight capital resources, while librarians are seeking ways to shift lesser-used collections into storage, create more user space, and improve services. Accomplishing these tasks at University of Massachusetts Amherst's Du Bois Library, a 26-story tower, posed a particular challenge. The library's master plan needed to explore compatible uses, partners for integrated services, and identify opportunities to repurpose space for university needs as well as the library's future vision. Learning Outcomes: 1.Recognize functions compatible with future libraries and their mission. 2.Identify forces prompting change in research libraries …
The Spatial Practices Of Privilege, Abigail A. Van Slyck
The Spatial Practices Of Privilege, Abigail A. Van Slyck
Architectural Studies Faculty Publications
The Spatial Practices of Privilege focuses on the children's cottage that stands on the grounds of the Breakers, in Newport, Rhode Island. Designed by Peabody and Stearns in 1886, the cottage was the first of several changes Cornelius Vanderbilt made to the property after he purchased it in 1885. While the main house (designed by Richard Morris Hunt after the first Breakers burned in 1892) has long been interpreted as the architectural reflection of the Vanderbilts' class status, the cottage has been ignored. Bringing together the methodologies of cultural landscape studies, performance theory, and the history of childhood, Abigail A. …

Mirages Solidified: Myth, Beautification, And Tourism In The Creation Of Santa Barbara's El Pueblo Viejo Landmark District, Michael D. Orth
Master's Theses
A number of books and articles have been written on the social movement to reimagine Southern California’s past in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While many of the pageants, parades, and public displays that defined this regional movement now reside in the pages of history, some architectural examples from this period are still visible today. In many cities, these examples are scattered throughout the community; while in others like Santa Barbara, they represent the centerpiece of the city’s architectural distinctiveness.
Santa Barbara’s architecture challenges urban scholars to successfully garner an accurate sense of the past. More importantly, such historic …

Fallingwater is the country home designed in 1935 for the wealthy Pittsburgh merchant Edgar Kaufmann Sr. by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Since its completion in 1940 it has enthralled the American public and architectural enthusiasts; received countless awards and recognitions; and is generally held as one of the greatest pieces of architecture of the modern world. It is the most well known residential building in the world excluding those made for royalty. Whether this great fame is deserved or not is a matter of opinion but there are a number of features of this buildings design that cause it …
The Role Of Indulgences In The Building Of New Saint Peter’S Basilica, Ginny Justice
The Role Of Indulgences In The Building Of New Saint Peter’S Basilica, Ginny Justice
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
New St. Peter’s Basilica is the second largest church in the world and considered by many to be the most beautiful. Built mainly during the sixteenth century, it took over a century to complete, and withstood corruption, wars, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, good popes and evil ones, and inched its way toward completion in 1626. The main funding for the early stages of building New St. Peter’s came from the sale of indulgences. Indulgences did more than help pay for the basilica, however. The abusive means of selling indulgences, including lies from priests and the papacy about their efficacy, resulted …

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The rapid growth of the internet and the far-reaching ubiquity of our virtual networks within the last decade have spurred an entirely new generation of interactive devices and technologies; these include the technologies seen in cell phones, video games, televisions and computers. Furthermore, online social networks such as Facebook and our portable Internet devices, mainly the iPhone, have begun to redefine our sense of time and place in a world of global connectivity and instant-access. This phenomenon results in a constant flow of communication and information that blankets the globe and marks a cultural paradigm shift to a much more …
Infrastructured: Opportunistic Infrastructure, Urban Revitalization, And Socioeconomic Reconciliation At Boundaries In Downtown Syracuse, Ny., Nilus Klingel
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The contention of this thesis is that large-scale infrastructures, such as highway systems, energy networks, or water supply complexes – as well as more abstract infrastructures, such as the infrastructures of capitalism or mercantilism – have, as the ‘harbingers’ of Modernity, an indelible impact upon the lives of the human beings who exist under their influence. Eradicating the traditional way of life that preceded them, these structures provide only one point of reference: the unknown future, in which the human struggles to find an identity.
Recent recuperations of infrastructures illustrate how the transformation of former agents of alienation can build …

Adult Survivorship And Juvenile Recruitment In Populations Of Crawfish Frogs (Lithobates Areolatus), With Additional Consideration Of The Population Sizes Of Associated Pond Breeding Species, Vanessa C. Kinney
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Crawfish Frog populations have declined significantly in both the northeastern and southwestern portions of their range, and are listed as state endangered in both Iowa and Indiana. They are animals with a secretive nature, and comparatively little is know about their basic life history and natural history. To address this gap, and to obtain the information necessary to manage for this species in areas of decline, I studied the breeding biology of two Crawfish Frog populations during 2009 and 2010. Using data collected from drift fence and pitfall trap arrays around breeding wetlands, I estimated breeding population sizes, operational sex …

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius
Library Research Prize Student Works
Raphael's paintings for the Stanza della Segnatura, Pope Julius II's personal library in the Vatican, are one of the great masterpieces of Renaissance art. My research project explored the rich meaning behind this innovative series of images, which project an expansive and holistic view of truth. I discovered that Raphael's message is relevant for Christians today who are trying to preserve a coherent view of truth in a complex, pluralistic culture.

At the center of Slocum Hall, four stories below a large skylight, stands a big shaggy lens - a deep, fur-lined scoop framed by a broad rectangle eight feet high. Between stepped floor and slanted ceiling is a curved wall punctuated by a trapezoidal aperture through which you glimpse a purple-tinted fragment of face. Forehead and cheeks, a nose and two eyes: Marcel Breuer.
The lens, a pavilion encasing deep embrasures, marks an exhibition of material from the archive of this leading 20th century architect. It points you toward the adjacent gallery, where more than 120 drawings and photographs reproduced …
