Hospitality Design Graduate Student Capstones
In order to understand the proposed coupled system, there must be an understanding of each component and how optimal performance of the system depends on sustainable architectural design. The basics of each component, a brief history and applicable case studies will be explained and presented starting with ground source thermal loops and then thermal mass (concrete walls). This will be followed by a more detailed explanation of how the components couple to form a functioning energy efficient system, how research can prove energy efficiency and how architectural design concepts can merge to influence sustainable hospitality design.

Kastra: Architecture And Culture In The Aegean Archipelago, Constantine E. Michaelides
Books and Monographs
Final version of Kastra: Architecture and Culture in the Aegean Archipelago, published Summer 2018. “Kastra: Architecture and Culture in the Aegean Archipelago,” is a sequel to “The Aegean Crucible: Tracing Vernacular Architecture in Post-Byzantine Centuries,” published in 2004. “The Aegean Crucible” focused on the vernacular architecture of the Aegean archipelago, while “Kastra” focuses on the collective fortification, a building type vital to survival in the region, during the thirteenth-to- eighteenth-century period. “Kastra” was also written on the conviction that what we identify today as the vernacular architecture of the Aegean islands emerged from the building of Kastra, the medieval collective …

George Croll Baum: Building A Greater Gettysburg, Abraham M. Apfel
Hidden in Plain Sight Projects
On November 16th, 1926 George Croll Baum died. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the local newspaper covered his death. The Gettysburgian, the paper for Gettysburg College reported that Henry W.A. Hanson, the college president, was “deeply distressed and further noted that Baum's death 'touched the hearts of all that knew him with deep regret.'" Within a month Dr. Hanson had already ordered three memorial plaques to be placed on the campus. Baum's family tried to help pay for them. Hanson refused the money. In a correspondence with Baum‟s brother about the plaques, Hanson told him, “What I did for your brother …

From Ark To Art : The 20-Year Journey Of The Civic, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, From Jewish Temple To Multi-Purpose Community Facility, John J. Boyle Iii

Rollins Architecture: A Profile Of Current And Historical Buildings, Wenxian Zhang, Eneido Bano, Charles Stevens
Books about Rollins College and Winter Park
The Rollins College campus has long been recognized as one of the most beautiful in America. Bordered by a picturesque lake and punctuated by majestic oaks and pines, it would be difficult to think of a more idyllic spot to engage in the pursuit of higher learning. Just as Rollins’ founders sought to bring to the Florida frontier the high-quality education of the New England colleges and universities of the late 19th century, they constructed the school’s first buildings in the same New England style. It was not until Rollins’ visionary eighth president, Hamilton Holt, that the College established its …

Gargoyles On Glatfelter Hall, Katherine D. Anthony
Hidden in Plain Sight Projects
When one walks around the campus of Gettysburg College, Glatfelter Hall towers above them, as one of the College’s most commanding edifices. One takes notice of the arched doorways, sunken windows, and the giant bell tower whose occupant chimes on the hour. What one may not notice are the eyes watching from the brownstone; faces and creatures at home in the stone, surveying your every move. Grotesques and gargoyles sit in the moldings, on the window sills and at the junction where roof and wall meet, hidden from the eye that does not have the compulsion to look. These architectural …
